I am a primary school teacher but I also have experience of working with high school aged children, particularly in maths. Most of my experience comes in the 5-11 age bracket.

I have worked in both England and Scotland and I currently hold a post as a Principal Teacher within North Lanarkshire. I have a particularly good knowledge of phonics and helping children develop strategies to enhance their reading skills.

A student's personal goals are always at the centre of their development and I like to approach tutoring on an individual basis, as, particularly with music, every student learns in a way unique to them. The first lesson is generally spent getting to know students (and vice versa), understanding the approaches that work best for them and building a much needed rapport. I feel strongly that students must feel at ease and thus able to express themselves freely in lessons, as this will transfer in their music.

Areas covered will include the student's chosen instrument (can be more than one), music theory, harmony, technique, timing, technology (using DAWs or Sibelius), working within band/ensemble contexts (both musically and socially) and self-development, which includes the study of practice methods, mentality and motivation. Guided Example - I begin by working through an example with the student, explaining each step in detail.

Supported Practice - I then provide a similar question broken into smaller parts, prompting the student to ask questions and gradually increasing their independence. This step is repeated until they are confident.

Independent Practice - Finally, I give the student a full question without hints or prompts, to check their understanding and ability to solve it independently.

I can tutor Mathematics up to A-Level (including Further Maths), and I am confident with all the content at this level. Informally, I have tutored peers in the past and found it rewarding to see their progress reflected in improved grades.
