Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / From their home
| About Robert: After graduating with an engineering degree, I spent some time in indusstry, then took a teaching qualification (PGCE) to teach in further education. After some time my hobby took over and I moved from being a free-lance french horn player to joining the BBC Welsh Symphony Orchestra in Cardiff, where I remained for 12 years. Most recently I have been working as a compliance officer for a mortgage brokerage. |
Teaching Experience: I have experience teaching mechanical engineering in further education, and mathematics and physics at secondary level up to A level. I have also taught the french horn and other brass instruments, principally trumpet and trombone, both on individual and class bases. |
Tutoring Approach: In my experience, the need for tutoring is usually caused by a lack of confidence in the pupil, which stems from difficulties in problem solving because of fundamental misunderstanding(s) at some stage in learning. I have found that a sympathetic approach to investigating and correcting the weaknesses and the provision of plenty of practice in past papers is the best approach to resolving pupils' problems and restoring confidence |

| About Justyna: I am a qualified English teacher from Poland who wants to teach international students. Last year I graduated The Foreign Language Teacher Training College of the Jagiellonian University and obtained the licentiate diploma (BA degree) in teaching English as a foreign language. |
Teaching Experience: In Poland I used to teach the Callan Method for over three years. |
Tutoring Approach: I am a very friendly and easy-going person. I teach speaking, listening, reading and writing skills as well as grammar and vocabulary using different kinds of materials such as authentic materials, games, DVD's etc., with as much homework as the student wants - classes will be tailored to student's needs. I am learner-centered, and focus on giving you plenty of authentic practice time. For me real interaction means that students attain language skills they can use in the real world, not just in the classroom. I want my students to be able to speak effectively whether it is socially, for work or for travel. |

Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / Online
| About Robert: I am a recent Oxford history graduate and am eager to give some short term help to students who might need a bit of a boost for their re-takes in January in either English or History. I can also help with Personal Statements, interviews for university and provide tutoring on general essay structure. Furthermore I would also be happy to tutor younger students in either History, English or Latin. |
Teaching Experience: I have lots of informal experience, and am currently helping my younger brother with his A-Level retakes and university application. I spent the summer looking after and tutoring 3 Libyan brothers (10,12 and 14) who were in England improving their English. |
Tutoring Approach: Try and get the pupil enthusiastic about their subject first, I think individual tutoring needs to be a much more two-way process than teaching so getting a lot of input from the student and talking with parents about what they want to achieve is, I feel, much more important than a rigid 'this is how to learn history' approach. Having said that if exams need passing then there is no better way than breaking down the syllabus into its constituent parts and using targeting learning to improve each area. This in conjunction with learning what the mark-schemes (i.e. exam technique) are looking for is probably the best way of giving marks a short-term boost. |

| About Ghufran: I am 28 years old, working full time as Head of ICT at a local secondary school. I have over 7 years teaching experience and have degree in European Politics and IT. In addition, I have a PGCE in ICT and am currently studying towards a MA in Education Leadership. My interests include travel, football and music. As a father of 2 daughters, I am eager to spend as much of my spare time with them as I am a very 'family-oriented' person. I am a Muslim, non-smoker and do not drink. |
Teaching Experience: I have taught at various schools in Birmingham and have over 7 years teaching experience. I have worked as KS3 coordinator for my subject (ICT), deputy subject leader, assistant head of year and currently I am Head of ICT department (all within secondary schools). I have experience of GCSEs, GNVQs, BTECs and DIDA qualifications. I have also taught adult education (TEFL) and have taught Urdu to younger children. In addition to my Bsc in European Politics and IT, I have a PGCE qualification in secondary education and I am currently studying for a MA in Educational Leadership. |
Tutoring Approach: My approach to tutoring includes a range of strategies. Each pupils is different and unique and therefore a tailored tutoring approach is needed. My initial approach is always a baseline assessment of the pupil's starting level and needs, therefore allowing the establishment of realistic targets for achievement. I always aim to establish excellent relationships with my pupils as I believe this is the key to maximising achievement. I consider myself to be a caring and motivating tutor and as a father of 2 children, I understand the importance of teaching younger pupils 'life skills' in addition to the academic and subject specific skills. |

| About Samantha: I am a 23 yr old student currently residing in the Canterbury area of Kent. I have recently graduated at the University of Kent for the second time and thus now have good degrees in the subjects of History and Law. In September 2008 I am starting a PGCE (teacher training) at Christchurch University which I am greatly looking forward to. Other than history, my greatest interests are in health and sport. I am conscious about eating right and I keep myself fit by visiting the gym and playing sports (mainly tennis and badminton). I have also recently taken up running and hope to one day run the London Marathon! |
Teaching Experience: I have been working as a Teaching Assistant with Select Education Plc for approximately a year now, and it has provided me with invaluable experience for both tutoring and my up-coming teacher training. I am passionate about teaching, and helping others achieve their full potential academically, which has been noted by various teachers in my classroom abilities. As a result of working with Select I have experienced many different schooling environments from mainstream to specialist (like behavioural and learning facilities) and thus have a decent knowledge of varying levels or difficulties that students can face. |
Tutoring Approach: It is difficult to summarise an approach to tutoring as it is important to be flexible and be willing to adapt the approach to the needs of the student. Each student is independent and has individual needs that can sometimes require different ways of teaching. I would ask to see some previous work (and tutor/teacher comments if possible) so that an interactive lesson plan and specific pace could be established. |

| About Thomas: I grew up in a bi-lingual household (German & English) in Luxembourg, where I went to the European School. Even though I was in the German section, I learned English from first year primary onwards and am equally comfortable at expressing myself in both of these languages, both orally and in the written form. Additionally, I learned French during secondary school in Luxembourg (I went on to achieve an A grade for my A-levels in Dorset, UK), I picked up Luxembourgish in everyday life up to fluent level, and I learned Spanish during a 2-month stay in Havanna, Cuba, in 2003. I also studied Business & Economics at A-level, am an enthusiastic drummer (I've played the drum kit and Congas in various bands and drum groups, performing in front of crowds of up to 500 people), am a keen sportsman (I played Rugby at Junior National level, Taekwondo at Uni, and enjoy cycling, running, tennis, etc. I am also a very keen photographer, an interest which I developed at university through learning various techniques of digital photography imaging and Web Design. I am also a keen film enthusiast, enjoy going to gigs of all sorts, like to run for charity, and take great interest in my local environment and community. |
Teaching Experience: I have taught a primary class in Ghana for a week (English and basic Maths), but other than that I have no formal teaching experience. I have, however, been involved in many translation and interpreting projects (at university and professionally) of which I would be glad to offer you a sample. I have received many years of high quality Primary, Secondary, and University education and am certainly able to teach what I have learned, as I still have all the teaching material. I am a very good communicator, enjoy explaining issues and discussions, and many of my friends have recommended me becoming a teacher. In fact, just before starting having accepted the MA International Journalism in Cardiff starting September 2008, I had also received an unconditional offer by Bristol University for MA Education MFL German & French. |
Tutoring Approach: First of all I will assess the individual skill level through a thorough conversation and analysis. Then I will ask the student where he sees his/her weaknesses/strengths. I will then commence teaching taking into account these areas, and when I realise that the student has any other weaknesses I will try to iron them out. I believe that teaching needs to strike a fine balance between discipline and fun, as enjoyment in learning the material is vital for motivation. I also support a continuous stream of feedback between tutor (me) and the tutee, as well as third parties (if the tutee agrees to this). I am willing to focus on any relevant subject, as long as I receive notice thereof at least a week in advance. If I don't receive any specific wishes, I will simply follow my teaching schedule. For classes over 30 minutes drive away, I expect a minimum of 90 minutes teaching. My schedule will fill up rapidly, so please get in touch as soon as you can. |

| About Lisa: I have recently finshed a masters degree in physics with first class honours. After completing my degree I undertook a fixed contract placement at Leeds Dental Institiute as a research technician in X-Ray synchrtron diffraction on human dental enamel. Since the contract has ended I have returned to university to start a Phd, my field of research is condensed matter physics, and I specialise in the field of magnetism. |
Teaching Experience: I have been tutoring A-Level students for six months. I also supervise laboratory's at the university and help in problem tutorials across all levels. During my time at the university I demonstrated physics experiments to memebers of the public as part of enrichment programs. |
Tutoring Approach: With all my clients I have an intial half hour session where both myself and the student can discuss the best approach to teaching. I believe that all students learn in different ways and it is important to establish the method which will suit that student. As a basic outline I usually teach each lesson, and then finish with a series of questions that check understanding and which help to develop problem solving skills. As the exam date get closer, I change to intense revision lessons, which usually involve answering past papers. |

| About Dariusz: I'm a Polish graduate from University of Silesia, Poland, English Philology Dept. I've just arrived in the UK. I wonder if my previous working experience could be useful in the new environment. Recently, I've published a self-study book for a new Langenscheidt series for Polish learners. |
Teaching Experience: For 12years I've been teaching English mostly to small groups of adults (incl. university students, language schools, small companies and private tuition). I have a two-year experience in a primary school level, though. |
Tutoring Approach: I enjoy face-to-face private tuition most. I always develop some kind of 'teaching-friendly' relationship with my students. I'm creative - always happy to find unique ways to explain grammar and vocabulary to them, ways to make a conversation interesting to a particular interlocutor. It's essential to break the routine for me. I'm patient and quite hard-working. |

Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / From their home / Online
| About Matthew: Hi, I'm Matthew. Just moved back to the UK after spending a Year Abroad living, studying and teaching in France. I am reading BA (Hons.) French at Cardiff University and will be entering my final year in September. My areas of interest and expertise lie in French - English / English - French Translation, French Grammar, French Oral and French Literature of the 19th Century (in particular the works of Marcel Proust). I'm passionate about French and France, and am enthusiastic when teaching them! |
Teaching Experience: I have spent part of my Year abroad living and teaching in Amiens. I was an 'Assistant en Langues Vivantes: Anglais' (English Language Assistant), and facilitated and taught English in a French Lycee (Secondary School) to pupils aged 11 to 21 years. Following on from this, I accepted a post to study and research in the Universite de Limoges, where I studied French and French Literature and privately taught English, and am planning on returning to Limoges in September 2009 to work as a lecteur in the Dept of Anglophone Studies. |
Tutoring Approach: I believe that learning should be fun, interesting and conducive. I have the advantage of having taught in France, and have received support, training and advice from The British Council, and consequently have a wealth of resources to facilitate the teaching and learning of French. I believe that individual students have individual styles and ways of learning and consequently, I am flexible in my approach to teaching French (depending on the needs of the pupil). Normally, I would like to meet with prospective students to not only see if we get on, but to gauge your ability in French and discover what it is you hope to achieve from tuition; a provisional meeting which I would charge half rate for. When I teach French I make it not only fun and interesting but also relevant to the demands of the pupil. |
