| About Jefferson: I am a Brazilian physicist who just moved to London with my wife, after earning my Ph.D. in Sao Paulo. I want to gain more experience on teaching and I think being a tutor is particularly motivating way of doing so. |
Teaching Experience: I have 1-year experience teaching physics at university level. I have also tutored younger kids in physics during my high school years. |
Tutoring Approach: It is important to show to the student that 'anyone can do it', that it is just a matter of calmly working on the matter. Commonly attention to this point has to be kept until the results themselves persuade the student of his/her own abilities. My style is quite simple: I basically give a class on the subject, making sure that I am being followed step-by-step. Then, special attention is paid to exercises, which at first are worked in the same way; the student should then solve (at first together, and then by him/herself) a number of them, until s/he feels confident on the task. |

| About Louise: I am a Doctoral student studying Educational and Child Psychology. I have worked with children and adolescents with autism, Asperger's, moderate learning difficulties and specific learning difficulties. I am extremely patient and understand the importance of working with a person's strengths and preferences to help them learn. I have worked with children of all ages within mainstream and special schools. |
Teaching Experience: I have supported teachers within an advisory role to suitably differentiate the curriculum to ensure that children can achieve. I have tutored in psychology and English Literature and took English Literature as an additional subject at University. I was a student mentor/tutor whilst at university, and have also helped adolescents with GCSE's. I have worked with TEACHH systems to help children and adolescents on the autism spectrum to access the curriculum, and understand the importance of structure and routine in these children's lives. |
Tutoring Approach: I am very patient and work with the child to help them find enjoyment in what they are doing. I believe in taking a multi-sensory approach to tutoring and where possible ensure I use visual and verbal teaching tools to aid understanding. I believe that a child needs guidance to learn, but also needs to be encouraged to work things out for themselves. This aids understanding but also instills a sense of pride and achievement in the child for the work that is done. I assess the child's strengths and work out a tutoring programme that is suited to their needs and learning style. Every child/adolescent is different and needs to learn in different ways. |

| About Inuka: My name is Inuka Jayasekera. I am British and have lived in the UK for the majority of my life. I was introduced to teaching at the age of 18, where I was offered an assistant role at my school while I waited for my A-Level results. Since then I have loved teaching and used to it on several occasions to supplement my main income. Although I was born and raised in the UK, I am of Sri Lankan origin, so I speak fluent Sinhalese too. I enjoy the cultural diversity in London and feel it has opened my mind to various ways of thinking. My hobbies are reading science fiction, drawing and travelling. I also take pleasure in exploring other languages and am currently learning French and Hungarian. |
Teaching Experience: 2003 - 2008 Private Tuition, UK During this time, I continuously tutored many private students. The main subject and level of tuition was Mathematics for KS3 and KS4. I have also tutored Computer Science students up to degree level. For 11 to 14 year olds, I have completed the KS3 with many students and therefore have all the material prepared and tested. The same applies to the 14 to 16 year old KS4 syllabus. For Computer Science, I have had mainly intermittent students, who returned on several occasions when they met trouble spots in their syllabus. In these cases, I prepared custom lessons for them to help them overcome their difficulties. However, I also have lesson plans prepared for the full KS4 ICT syllabus. 2005 - 2008 King's College London, UK Teaching Assistant (BSc and MSc Levels) In this position I worked closely with the module lecturers to develop and further the understanding of the students. In tutorial and lab sessions, I taught both theoretical and practical concepts to a varied class of students, from a range of educational backgrounds. This meant providing extra support on several occasions to students of a non-mathematical background. During my time as a teaching assistant I also marked coursework and provided effective feedback for students. The modules I have assisted in include: - Compression and Multimedia Methods - Introduction to Cryptography - Advanced Cryptography - Foundation of Computer Science - Algorithm Design and Analysis - Text Searching and Processing - Data Structures - Introduction to C++ - Beginner Java - Intermediate Java - Advanced Java 2001 Alethea International School, Sri Lanka 'O/A' Level Physics Teacher Assistant In this position I mainly assisted in the running of the Physics laboratory used by 14 to 18 year olds; this covered a range of daily tasks. The most important of these tasks was to devise experiments that would help students in understanding the theory taught in lessons. I would also have to set up the laboratory for the practical sessions and explain the experiments and the required assessments that should be made to the students. After many positive appraisals from my students, I was later offered a position as a training teacher at the school. |
Tutoring Approach: I always begin by getting to know my students and their requirements. After which I adapt my material for their needs. I am happy to create new material for any student who is having difficulties in any particular areas. All my lessons are followed up by question and answer type sessions to test the student's understanding of the material. My lessons are always as interactive as possible. I believe that learning at any age should be fun and thrilling in order to keep the concentration of the student and make the lessons memorable. I am extremely hard working and enjoy going the extra mile to see excellent results. I am also very friendly and patient and have built an excellent repertoire with my colleagues and students in the past. |

View Marco's Profile

Types of Tutoring: Travels to you
| About Marco: I am in my late twenties. I studied separate degrees in Physics and Mechanical Engineering, but had always offered private tuition since I left school. In fact, I enjoyed teaching so much that I completed a Post-Grad Certificate in Education for Physics a few years ago, and am now a fully qualified secondary teacher working at a prestigious Public School. As far as tutoring goes, however, I think what matters is that I am down-to-Earth, and communicate well. All the knowledge in the world is useless if you can't share it! Having lived in South America for many years, I am also perfectly fluent in Spanish. My passions include photography, film and astronomy. |
Teaching Experience: I am a fully qualified secondary school Physics teacher, teaching KS3, GCSE and A-level Physics. I am therefore very much in touch with how GCSEs and A-levels work, and what is relevant. The same is true for maths; although I don't teach maths at my school, I regularly tutor in maths, and am very aware of what is in the GCSE and AS/A2 syllabus (teaching the Edexcel modules, for example). I have separate honours degrees in both physics and mechanical engineering, and can therefore tutor most first or second year undergrad subjects in these disciplines. In fact I never got any other jobs during college as I have been tutoring in a variety of subjects since I left school. I also have experience giving Spanish conversation classes. |
Tutoring Approach: Practice, Practice, Practice! I don't believe anything is impossible to understand; it is just a question of using the right examples to clarify, and taking enough time to practice thoroughly. |

| About Sharad: I provide maths tuition in Bristol, Portishead, Nailsea and Clevedon. I am a recently retired maths teacher. I live in Ham Green, Pill in Bristol. I obtained my mathematics degree from London University in 1972 and my Post Graduate Certificate in Education in 1974 also from London University. I have an enhanced CRB police checked certificate and I am also registered with the General Teaching Council for England. I am a full time tutor and I can provide tuition either at my home or student's home. I have tutored GCSE and AS/A-level students in Portishead, Cleveland, Nailsea and Bristol. My students and their parents are always extremely happy with their improved maths results. Students who have retaken their GCSE and AS/A level with me after leaving school or college made vast improvement in their grades. |
Teaching Experience: I have over 30 years maths teaching experience, most recently at St Brendan's Sixth Form College and Cotham High Scool. |
Tutoring Approach: 1) Below is a recommendation from a student who studied at Gordano School, Portishead Bristol: ' I was struggling to learn an extra AS inFurther Maths at sixth form, whilst only having one fortnightly tutorial with my teacher. I decided to get a tutor and after finding Mr Rana's details i gave him a call to arrange a session once a week, he was so friendly and helpful, i felt completely at ease during our tutorials. He'd always be willing to put in any extra effort to help you succeed, withplenty of extra resources like past exam papers and mark schemes.I could steer each lesson, towards areas that i found particularly problematic. I was seriously worried about achieving the grades that i needed to get intoto university in both mathematics and further mathematics, butwith his help i managed to achieve anAin AS furtherMaths and an A in A-Level Maths. Now i am off toSouthampton University to studyfor a maths degree. His positive attitude and enthusiasm for the subject means that he can relate to and help anyone of any ability. This is why I would gladly and confidently recommend him to any one who needed extra help, especially within the area of mechanics. '- Emily 2) Below is a thank you note written by a GCSE student from Cotham School. He was predicted to get a D grade. He in fact he got a B grade and both his parents and he were elated by this result: " Thanks so much Sharad You've built my confidence in Maths hugely. I now feel happy to see my exam results for Maths. I will be sure to ring you with my results when they arrive. All the best for the future. Theo " 3) Henna got an E grade and after a year of tuition she got a C grade. Below is her thank you text message: "Hiya Sharad this is Henna from yate. I got my maths results today and I have passed with a C, I got 306 marks out of 480. Thank you for all your help. I reallydo appreciate it. Take care.. Henna" 4) Hi it's Emma, just wanted to say thank you so much for all your help! I got 96/100 in the Mechanics exam and an A overall. I'm doing what Emily did and taking up further maths this year so I might end up needing your help with Stats! 5) My daughter was struggling in GCSE maths and was finding it hard to understand. Although her teacher was helpful, she obviously needed to look after the whole class. I contacted Sharad and my husband and I were very pleased with the way he interacted with Sophie - he is endlessly patient and she found that she understood the concepts much better. Also, the fact that Sharad was able to come to the house to give the tuition made the arrangement much easier for us. Sharad helped Sophie's confidence and ability in this subject enormously. Sue |

| About Amy: I have a first class degree in English Literature and Creative Writing and can tutor English across all ages. I have experience in tutoring many ages and am patient, kind, and very hard working. I am training to become a primary school teacher, and I love learning and teaching. I am a passionate, friendly, smiley upbeat person and hope to bring that positive energy to everyone I teach. I am available to tutor in Surrey and the six zones of London. I know my way around London and am organised, punctual and reliable. |
Teaching Experience: I am currently training as a primary teacher and have experience working one on one and with groups in a mainstream classroom setting. I have experience of teaching ages 4 to 16 at a Summer Camp in Michigan, USA. I also have experience of tutoring at University level. |
Tutoring Approach: I create an individual learning profile for each person I tutor, and highlight strengths and weaknesses. This profile will adapt as the student learns. I aim to help those I tutor to enjoy what they learn and make steady, monitored progress. I give regular homework which I carefully plan and tailor to the exact needs of the individual, then assess for free. If you are working with set texts I will read them thoroughly so that we can discuss them together and think of ways to tackle potential essay questions. If you do not have any set texts then I am happy to select books for you at an appropriate level. I use lots of positive encouragement and praise at every stage. I try to foster an interest in writing, reading, and open discussion. My main aim is to empower those I tutor so that they become progressively more independent in their learning. |

| About Supriya: Having graduated with a first class honours as a topper in the university and a PhD in Biotechnology from the University of Westminster. I am well aware of the difficulties students face and how best to overcome them as I successfully managed to do it myself. At this stage I enjoy teaching and sharing what I've learnt and understood over the years during my academic life. |
Teaching Experience: I had the opportunity of teaching primary, GCSE and A - level students privately and Bachelors and Masters students in the university. All of my students went on to get significantly higher grades and managed to gain entry into competitive courses and qualified with a first class. |
Tutoring Approach: With my 5yrs of teaching and tutoring experience, I believe that one-to-one tutoring is the best way to help students to get that extra edge and understand the subject in depth in a better way. I prefer teaching by providing relevant examples and simplifying their process of learning to the best of my abilities. |

| About Sophie: I am a young and enthusiastic person who has just completed my a-levels. I recieved an A in my Math and biology A-level and a B in my Further Math A-Level. As I have just left college, I understand how it feels to be a student that may need extra help in certain subjects areas. I am compassionate, understanding and very patient, and have an excellent understanding of maths, especially at GCSE level. I am thinking of doing my maths degree next year, and need to start saving if i wish to do so. I enjoy socialising, dancing and a wide variety of music, but my academic passions are maths and science. |
Teaching Experience: Generally helped my fellow friends and students in college and school, had 2 weeks experience at a nusery, and am currently teaching my brother and his friends thier maths GCSE. |
Tutoring Approach: Step by Step breakdown of basic mathematical principles so my student will have a strong foundation to start with. One on one explanation, and book references for extra support. Will start teaching the student the course from the begining, but will help them with additional school work or homework they may have problems with. |

| About Aisling: I am passionate about teaching as I love to share knowledge and cultivate the love of learning in others. I have a wide range of subject interests, though archaeology, history and art are my main interests. Some specific topics I have researched include: Renaissance & 17th century art and theory; Romanesque art & architecture; Greek & Roman art, archaeology and history; art in France 1850-1900; archaeological and art historical methodologies and theories. I am currently undertaking a Masters in Maritime Archaeology and History. I am also a practicing artist, working mostly in pen & ink, with a current installation in Bristol's St Stephen's Cafe. |
Teaching Experience: At University level I have taught on a Japanese Art & Architecture course to 2nd year undergraduates (at Trinity College Dublin). This included lessons on the Tea Ceremony, Namban Art, Zen Buddhist Art and the Art of Dress. | About Jack: Hi. I'm a 22 year old teacher who graduated with a masters degree in maths and physics (MMath&Phys) from The University of Manchester. I have recently accepted a post teaching English to adults in South Korea which starts in January and am based in Liverpool until January 3rd, in the meantime looking to teach school and college students Maths and Physics. Teaching Experience: I have tutored various students whilst at university - at GCSE and A level - and have also done a 2 month post teaching English in South Korea to 8 to 15 year olds at a summer camp. |
Tutoring Approach: My approach to teaching maths and physics is to encourage the students to use the same techniques I used to get my A grades in maths, further maths and physics at A2. Essentially, this is a focus on understanding why the methods used make sense and repeated practice of past exam papers. I am confident I can help. |

| About Graham: I am a married father of two children and have completed a BSc (Hons) in Biomedical Sciences from the University of Bradford, and a PhD in Medicine from the University of Birmingham. For the past three years I have worked as a Biomedical Scientist in Histopathology, specialising in Molecular Pathology and Genetics at University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust. I am extremely enthusiastic about science and medicine, and really enjoy lecturing and teaching. I aim to simplify complex concepts and enhance understanding in all pupils, regardless of their academic abilities. |
Teaching Experience: During my career I have been responsible for training junior staff, practically and academically, in small groups and on an individual basis. I have also lectured on several occasions to groups of people, including presentations at scientific conferences, explaining concepts to people with varying levels of understanding of the subject. Over the past 5 years I have tutored many GCSE, A-level & University students in Biology and Chemistry with notable success. |
Tutoring Approach: I understand that each student is different and has individual requirements. I first arrange to meet the pupil (and their family where appropriate) face-to-face and on a no-fee basis to discuss the requirements and identify the subject areas they are finding the most difficult. If we both agree to start personal tuition, we then work through the relevant syllabus and I simplify and explain the areas of difficulty using examples and visual aids. I try to build up the confidence of the pupil as much as I can, as I see this as a crucial aspect. I also set homework if this is desired by the pupil and family, including set exam questions relevant to the syllabus. |

We can also read the lessons learned at schoo and I will explain what has not been clearly understood. |

| About Emma: I am a student at Brunel University studying financial mathematics, I have taught many of my family and friends and am always helping around exam time. I enjoy teaching children and have found that if you give some children a chance to think without rushing them it works wonders. |
Teaching Experience: I have taught many students at GCSE level in mathematics, have taught basic french to students and also alot of family friends and family. |
Tutoring Approach: I make teaching fun, I interact games (especially for younger students) so that they catch on quicker without noticing that they are learning. I also encourage my students to do a little bit of homework for me each week (only about half an hours worth as i know that they have their own school work to do) but this does stop them forgetting what they have learnt the week before. I also like to interact the parents in sitting and learning with their children (if the parents wish to) so that the work does not seem like such a chore but like a family activity with games. |

Teaching Experience: During my Bachelor and Masters I used to teach A-Level students in subjects such as Maths, Geography, Economics. |
Tutoring Approach: My approach to tutoring is to try to allow the students to do as much of the work as they possibly can by themselves and I coach them along and do my best to smooth over the rough spots. As in my view ideal tutors must be activators rather than facilitators. Activators cause active student learning by motivating and leading students with appropriate, open-ended questions. I do not have a "method" or "strategy" for tutoring because each student is an individual. |
