About Ashleigh:
I am a qualified teacher with 15 years experience in Primary schools and as a private tutor offering individual lessons for children who need extra support with basic literacy. I use a range of personally tailored strategies, with a realistic phonetic approach to reading and and writing that doesn't over-simplify the English language yet gives children the understanding they need to make progress at all levels both in and out of school. I can to help them to enjoy and take control of their own learning, encouraging success through a structure of clear building blocks, without being afraid to look at mistakes and put them right. I also offer individual DRUM KIT tuition, MUSICAL INSTRUMENT MAKING and playing workshops, NURSERY CLASS MUSIC sessions, one-to-one INTERACTIVE MUSIC for adults with learning disabilities and BASIC MATHEMATICS tuition - please contact me for more information.

Teaching Experience:

After taking my degree I worked for 6 years as a Learning Support Assistant, specialising in helping children of all abilities who had missed out on learning to read in the school system. I worked with children who had 'slipped through the net' and become frustrated and negative for many different reasons, often from lack of continuity in teaching, through not having their work properly corrected or because of special needs that had not been addressed. I went on to take a Postgraduate Certificate of Education at Goldsmiths College, London, and since then have worked as a part-time visiting tutor as well as following my career as a professional musician.

Tutoring Approach:

I start with an assessment session, using word lists and graded texts to discover a child's present level of reading ability. With younger children I make an alphabet chart with word and pictures. They think of the words to use and we talk about the different sounds that the letters can make. We look at the difference between the vowels: a - e - i - o - u (and y) and the consonants, and at how sounds can be blended together, not forgetting that some words do not obey the 'rules'. I move on to a set of games and books to give practice at finding and remembering these sounds and patterns in words, and then we use them to write sentences which we cut up and rearrange to practice and reinforce both reading and writing skills. In this way the children are given challenges that they can succeed at, in stages of growing difficulty and at their own pace. Punctuation and grammar are introduced, as they are needed, to make the meaning clearer to the reader. I always aim to answer a child's questions and encourage them to use their curiosity.

About Zaf:
I am a 39 year old 'die-hard' Nottingham Forest fan! I graduated with a Bachelor of Engineering degree in Chemical Engineering in the early nineties and have since careered into a position of Production Manager at a Chemicals Manufacturing site at Ashby de la Zouch. For a long time I have successfully applied the business & science based knowledge from my university & school days. In addition of recalling & applying knowledge, i am able to motivate all sort of individuals to achieve their personal & business goals.

Teaching Experience:

I privately taught 1st & 2nd year Chemical Engineering graduates at the University of Nottingham from 1997 to 2002. The subjects covered business studies, chemistry, maths & physics. I have since had work commitments that have not allowed sufficient time to provide tuition.

Tutoring Approach:

If it is a problem based session, i would facilitate the lesson so that the student is able to answer the question them-self.

If it is to teach a new subject/idea/principle, i would firstly set the objective and than plan the contents to deliver this before reviewing the lesson learnt.

In summary the teaching will be tailored taking into account the nature of the student and the type of lesson/problem at hand.

About Carol:
Since leaving Cardiff University in 1999 I have had several bi-lingual roles in London and France as an Executive Assistant culminating in a Human Resources managerial position in France.
Having spent 5 years near Annecy, myself, my French husband and our two bi-lingual children are now located in a village in South Gloucestershire, a short drive from the Aztec West Business Park in Almondsbury.

Teaching Experience:

I very much enjoy teaching and I think this is an extremely important factor that does filter through to the students that I teach. I currently teach small groups of 3-11 year olds with their parents. I have taught English in a primary school in France during my gap year and since having my own children have been teaching as and when time permits.

Tutoring Approach:

All classes are tailor made to the clients needs. It is very important everyone is made to feel very at ease and relaxed. Every question is answered and encouraged. My goal as a teacher is to equip all my students with the skills to use the French language efficiently and confidently, after all confidence is everything as far as languages are concerned. Finally and most importantly the lessons must be enjoyable!

About Michael:
I am a postgraduate at the University of Bristol; I have a varied educational background in Music, Sociology, Theology, Classical Civilisation, and particularly (my main subject) Philosophy. Within philosophy my areas are quite expansive; ethics, metaphysics, aesthetics, history of philosophy, philosophy of science, epistemology and the interplay between them.

I have an undergraduate degree in Sociology and Philosophy (2:i) and am reading towards my MA, moving on to PhD.

Teaching Experience:

I have run discussion groups and run talks and seminars of my work, and encouraged discussions in groups; I have also been a teaching assistant at a primary school.

Tutoring Approach:

I like to help people realise their potential, and help people to help themselves. What is important is to make the material seem approachable, and never to say something is hard; that already makes it difficult from the word go. There is a difference between having lots of steps and procedure, to being hard. Nothing is really hard, its just not seen how it can be overcome.

About Chantal:
I recently graduated from University of Cambridge in Medicine, and I am currently studying for a Master's in Immunology at Imperial College London.

Teaching Experience:

I have taught piano music theory to children and adults for 8 years. I have also taught science and maths of various levels to children for 6 years.

Tutoring Approach:

I find that a firm understanding of the subject, an understanding of a child's mind, and an appreciation of their other pressures makes a more supportive tutor. I also believe that questions and past papers provide a vital revision tool and test the knowledge of a student. It is time-wasting to merely lecture someone without ensuring their understanding of a topic. I am very passionate about teaching children because I believe that through the correct supervision and hard work, you can reach your full potential to succeed in examinations.

About annette:
Hello,
my name is Annette, I'm a native French speaker as I've lived in Paris all my life.
I am currently studying Japanese at the University of Manchester and I would like to teach French during my free time.

Teaching Experience:

I was giving French lessons to immigrant grown ups in Paris. In the U.K I have taught French to teenagers as well as young children.

Tutoring Approach:

I like to teach the real French as it is spoken in France rather than as books teach it.
For grown ups as much as for younger I like to use French songs to accustom my pupils with the French language. (most people outside the U.K learnt English listening to the Beatles).

About Mahmoud:
I have recently graduated from City University having a BEng degree in Electronics with a 2:1 class of 65% overall mark. I loved Electronics since I was a student at school as I consider it as one of the major applications of Maths and Physics that I loved a lot. I'm the type of person who likes having his own way of thinking about things and this gives me the ability to explain and understand concepts from different perspectives. I always like being self-motivated and giving motivation to others to get involved in solving problems by thinking of their own new solutions.

Teaching Experience:

I used to give tutorial sessions to my colleagues at the university especially when they were in need for deeper explanations of hard concepts such as Maths, Physics, Computer Programming in C++ and Java based on the OOP principles. During the last summer, I ran a tuition program to a German colleague to explain to him the concepts of a module called Dynamics and Control which he had failed in the first attempt exam period. At the end of the summer, he got 80% in the resit exam and then sent me a thank-you letter in which he stated that the way I was teaching him was much better for him than the way of the module teacher himself. That really gave me a higher level of confidence in my own ability of teaching.

Tutoring Approach:

My approach of tutoring is based on the 'friend-to-friend' rather than the 'teacher-to-student' relationship. The reason is to give the student a psychological feeling of that he/she is not being taught at a school or university class. A 5-minute break is always preferred to be given after each 2 hours of teaching. The main guaranteed outcome of each session is to implement a solid-state understanding and an overall coverage of the concept being discussed. Some testing questions of different difficulty levels are to be given at the end of each session to make sure the student has fully understood the concepts explained. Questions, course works, or home works are discussed after the relevant concepts have been fully explained and understood. The determined charge is 12 per hour.

About Mohammad:

I already have teaching experience as I have tutored both my friends and their younger siblings.

My approach is not to give answer to students but help them achieve this by guiding them to understanding the situation. I want people to learn to apply their knowledge and not just memorize it. Subjects: Spanish  |  Maths  |  French
Availability: Weekends / Weekdays
Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / From their home / Online

About Sophie:
I am a lively and experienced French, Maths and Spanish teacher who has worked in the UK, France and New Zealand.

I hold a Masters in Engineering degree from the University of Cambridge 2(i) and did my formal teacher training "on the job" by the Graduate Teacher programme route, gaining my Qualified Teacher Status in 2006. I have lived and worked in France and speak fluent French, and also Spanish.

Teaching Experience:

I have been teaching in secondary schools for 4 years and have taught boys, girls and mixed classes and have a variety of techniques to motivate and stimulate most learners. The majority of my teaching has been at Highgate School in London (an HMC school) where I have guided many students to top grades at GCSE, AS and A-Level. My speciality is with the learner who is struggling with confidence or ability to achieve their goal of an A*-B grade.

Tutoring Approach:

It is important that the tutorials suit the learner and as such I like to plan a few goals with the student (and parent if applicable). In some cases it is useful to concentrate on day to day struggles with classwork; in many others it is good to concentrate on specific goals, usually related to an examination specification.

I truly believe that a student learns best when learning is fun! I have a range of games and methods from which I select to suit the student. Some students learn better in a pair and joint tutorials with friends can be agreed by arrangement.

Subjects: Law  |  Maths  |  Biology  |  Physics  |  Chemistry
Availability: Weekends / Weekdays
Types of Tutoring: Travels to you

About Zena:
I graduated from the University of Cambridge with a BA (Hons) in Natural Sciences in 2005 (2.1). I have completed the Graduate Diploma in Law (2007) and the Legal Practice Course (2008) from the College of Law, both with Distinction.

Teaching Experience:

During my gap year, after graduation, I tutored students one-to-one in 'A' Level Physics and Chemistry. Both my students received 'A' grades. More recently, I tutored a student AS Chemistry for her recent exams.

Tutoring Approach:

I firstly ensure my students understand the basics, and wherever possible try to develop their interest in the subject by taking them beyond the syllabus. I believe it is important to understand how concepts tie in with each other, and to see the 'bigger picture', which is invaluable for students taking their subjects onto a higher level. At the same time, it is of course important to understand the importance of achieving high marks in the final exams. So, to this end, I focus heavily on past papers of the relevant exam board, and scrutinise sample mark schemes with the students, so that they can see how the examiners will award them marks.

About lauren-ann:
i am currently in my last year at university doing psychology. so a wide variety of subjects are covered in my course.

Teaching Experience:

i have tutored students who were preparing for the gsce with general revision. however i have also tutored students who have been particular struggling with a specific subject and just wanted some time on one specific area.

Tutoring Approach:

i feel the best approach to teaching is decided by the student in the sense that i will adapt my teaching to the best way that will benefit the student. for example some students learn better when they are provided with a set of notes were as some interact and learn more from pictures. so i feel the best way to tutoring is to assess the best way to fit the student.

About Sonny:
As a professional artist, I uphold a high degree of artistic competence and have exhibited work throughout the UK and have won a number of awards for my paintings.

I have also worked in a number of galleries, giving me additional insight into the presentation of works of art.

Teaching Experience:

I have been tutoring oil painting on a one-to-one basis since 2005.

I have also taught painting at degree level and drawing in a primary school.

In addition to tutoring oil painting, I also currently run a life drawing class within a college.

Tutoring Approach:

As a passionate artist, I take great pleasure in helping others develop as artists. With this in mind I take a thorough approach to the lessons I provide and endeavour to give my students a solid foundation and the needed confidence with which to create their own oil paintings.

In my experience as a tutor, in order to be able to paint, one has to LEARN HOW to paint. Of course, talent is valuable in any subject, but actually anyone can learn to paint, so long as they are interested.
