| About Sarah: I am a 22 year old Psychology Graduate, also currently undertaking a Masters in Speech and Language Therapy at City University London. Between studying, I have enjoyed working as a Learning Support assistant, as I like to try to help others to achieve their potential. I am a friendly and sociable person, and like to keep myself busy! |
Teaching Experience: I worked as a Teaching Assistant through an agency for 7 months, which involved assisting learning in a range of appropriate environments on various placements (i.e. Schools/nurseries etc) throughout the week. My main position was at a pupil referral unit, working with 14-16 year olds who had been excluded from school, which meant that I was faced with very challenging behavior on a regular basis. This usually involved one to one support with individuals, small group work, or in class support. I feel that good communication skills, a caring and positive nature, as well as the ability to be emotionally resilient and assertive were crucial to my success in this role. I volunteered for 2 years with the National Autistic Society as a Befriender. This was originally working with a young child who suffers from Autism and Epilepsy, and then arranging activities for myself and an adolescent boy who suffers from Asperger Syndrome. I offered him social support and advice, and we tried to develop his independence. He appeared to make steady progress, and the experience gave me the opportunity to work with and show respect for people who experience learning difficulties. I also did voluntary work with the Stroke Association, visiting a lady who had suffered a stroke. We worked on her reading and writing, through a range of work sheets and activities, as well as also trying to improve her deteriorated speech. |
Tutoring Approach: I try to create a relaxed environment, through building up a rapport with each student I work with. I feel it is important for studying to be enjoyable, as well as informative and structured. I am an enthusiastic and motivated person, and try to encourage this approach in others. |

| About Jonathan: I am a local teacher with a passion for raising standards among young people. I am originally from Northern Ireland but moved to Cambridge four years ago to complete my Post Graduate Certificate in Education at the Faculty of Education, University of Cambridge (2006). I have taught Religious Studies and History to GCSE level and Critical Thinking to AS level. Before teaching in mainstream education, I worked one to one with a pupil with Autistic Spectrum Disorderin a school for pupils with severe learning disabilities in Belfast this experience has taught me much about finding approaches to learning which are both personalised and engaging. |

View Nikki's Profile
Availability: Weekends / Weekdays
Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / From their home / Online
| About Nikki: I am primary school teacher and mother who believes every child can achieve a great deal. I know how hard it can be for some children to reach their full potential in a full and busy classroom at school. I have started home tutoring to enable children develop their confidence so that they can feel good about their achievements. Most children have times when they need a little extra boost. I prefer to tutor in my home, where all my resources are at hand. I am willing to travel to your home, I charge an extra 5 per session for this. I can give advice to parents e.g. offering advice on how best to support your child's learning or what to expect when your child starts school, as well as one to one skills tutoring or small group work. |
Teaching Experience: I have been a class teacher in english primary schools for more than twenty years, and have also held the management post for literacy in three of those schools. I have taught many children who have needed different teaching from the majority of their peers and been a SENCo. I have received termly updated training and attend and lead in-service training for primary teachers. I have taught children across the primary age range, from Reception/Foundation stage to Year 6 within the last 6 years. My specialism is teaching reading and writing. I have also taught the maths curriculum throughout my career. I also some experience of adult education and would be willing to assist any more mature person wanting to increase their confidence with literacy. |
Tutoring Approach: I have sets of work to address specific tasks (e.g. Key stage 2 SATs), but prefer to tailor sessions to the specific needs and learning styles of the child. During the first session/s I will assess your child's strengths and in subsequent meetings, address the areas they particularly find challenging. Most sessions will be an hour but I offer 45 minute sessions if appropriate (this is often more effective with younger children). I am happy to assess any child and feedback to you my professional opinion on a one off basis. I can usually offer short blocks of tutoring (e.g. once a week for 6 weeks) or I can offer longer term support. I can offer high quality structured specialist literacy teaching to home educated children. |

| About Erskine: I enjoy a variety of social activities. Keeping fit is important to me and I have a passionate interest in racket sports and Indoor Rowing where I have previously held both a British and a World Record/Ranking. I enjoy socialising and get great pleasure from cooking for others whilst sharing my recording interests in music and visual arts like landscape photography for which I have had 70 exhibitions over the last 25 years. Writing is something that I have a strong interest in and I will often read and write about a variety of social and psychological interests. Sometimes, I work as a commercial photographer and a personal trainer and engage as a internet relationship counsellor. |
Teaching Experience: I am a Learning Support Tutor with a Sports and Behavioural Therapy background. Currently working in Further Education and YOP, delivering a variety of educational projects and courses for learners, some with a range of mental health issues or Special Educational Needs in: - Life & Basic Skills, ECDL and General ICT, Digital and Conventional Photography, Health & Fitness, Creative & Positive Thinking. My educational responsibilities have included local projects which I have undertaken, and have seen a large increase over previous student usage of the E-Learning resources I have created covering a 3yr period. Within these projects, this has produced for those students an average pass mark of 83%, where 96% have achieved at least the National Curriculum Level 1 standard or higher. This reflection is seen within all of my taught subjects over successive academic years. I like to use my educational and psychology skills either on a one to one basis or small group settings to raise the expectations and achievement for all my learners regardless to any Special Educational Needs. |
Tutoring Approach: My background in Sports and Behavioural Therapy coupled with my Continuous Professional Development in Education has helped me develop both managerial skills and experience in working with learners with specific learning difficulties. I support the education of any learner with a language, cultural or specific difficulties in both written and spoken English and provide, flexible and specialist teaching or support within an open learning classroom for designated and assessed learners who may be recognised as a learners with Downs Syndrome, Aspergers Syndrome, ADHD, Dyslexia or Specific Learning Difficulties and Emotional Behavioural Disorders. |

| About Lucy: Hi, I'm Lucy! I have lived in Leeds and Manchester over the last 5 years, and this summer working in Australia (!) but I have just moved to Sheffield, and plan to make this my permanent home. I am currently working in a school but this position is only part-time, from 8 till 1pm, therefore am interested in continuing my teaching on a self-employed basis. Having worked extensively with children over the years I feel I able to gain a good rapport quickly, I am friendly and sociable. And definitely have a responsible and hard-working work ethic. |
Teaching Experience: I have recently finished my Masters degree at Manchester University in Educational Psychology, and I hope to further my career to qualify as a Educational and Child Psychologist. I have worked with children of all ages, from babies to older teenagers, and I really enjoy making an impact on their learning. I have taught in Africa, I have been a mentor, a teaching assistant, an LSA and youth worker. I am currently working in Sheffield as a pupil development worker. |
Tutoring Approach: I believe the main aim with tutoring is building self-esteem. If a child believes he/she can achieve in a subject then they are more likely to succeed. Therefore I have a positive approach to teaching, by setting targets and giving lots of praise. I also feel that learning should be fun not a chore, therefore I always aim my teaching around areas which children enjoy and progress from there. |

| About Lizzie: I have a fun attitude to life and believe a sense of humour offers a way out of challenging experiences. I am a linguist and love to talk other languages in different countries. I am quite sporty and enjoy swimming, skiing, horse-riding and walking. Everyday I practice centering meditation and this helps with a sense of well-being and peace in my life. Part time I help to run a charity called Recovery which helps people to recover from Mental Health problems. In September we will be taking the project to schools and recruiting volunteers, doing assemblies etc. |
Teaching Experience: I have taught French and English for about 12 years in Secondary schools. Then I retrained to teach Relgious Education and worked as head of RE in two schools in my local area. I have always been interested in Special Needs and have helped with spelling, reading and writing to many young people. I am not very strict as a tutor but expect to reach our SMART goals and hope that you will work hard to get your target grade. |
Tutoring Approach: The learning should be an experience that is memorable. I do not agree with just chalk and talk. We will use the internet and research techniques. |
