About Kirsty:
I am young, friendly, enthusiastic and experienced tutor. I have lived abroad for over 5 years so I am very open minded and value diversity.

I am currently completing an Msc in Community Learning and Development and enjoying it very much.

As a trained artist I enjoy making and exhibiting my work in Scotland. I am a very active person, I love snowboarding and rock climbing and I think my varied interests have stood me in good stead in my experience thus far - good analogies for teaching!

Teaching Experience:

Over four years teaching Art and English as a second language in Japan - to students aged 2 to 82!

In Japan I taught in both private and group settings and trained colleagues to facilitate learning. Experience of teaching business English and preparing students to sit TOEFL, IELTS and other English Language tests.

In the UK I have taught art and craft in children's classes and young people art school portfolio preparation.

I have extensive experience of working with children, young people and migrants in a community setting, teaching everything from global citizenship to outdoor education.

Tutoring Approach:

As an arts graduate I am extremely creative and like to apply this to my teaching.

While working in Japan I set up the community centre in which I worked and created the programme and curriculum according to the expressed needs of the students; I think this is very important - to respond to what the students wish to learn.

I am patient and tolerant of mistakes and attitudes, while encouraging and hopeful about progress. I am very laid back and like to have a joke - I would like to think that my students enjoy learning with me, as I have certainly enjoyed learning with them!

About Jodie:
I am a 22 year old female currently studying for a Masters in Social Policy at The London School of Economics. I am friendly, engaging and used to working with, and teaching, students from all social backgrounds and ethnicities. I am passionate about teaching and the education system and I have been tutoring privately since leaving Oxford University in June 2007.

I am flexible about working hours but I would prefer to teach within 30 minutes travel time from my home in South London.

Teaching Experience:

English Language and Literature - I have a degree from The University of Oxford in English Language and Literature. I also completed a full a-level in each subject separately, and I am therefore happy to teach either at any level. I currently teach one student for A-level English Literature and one student for GCSE English and, over the past year, I have helped 5 more students with exam preparation and coursework for GCSE and A-level English Literature.
I have also been working for a Not-for-profit company that provides educational provisions for students that have been expelled from mainstream school. Through this work I have become very familiar with The AQA GCSE English syllabus, and working with students who have emotional, behavioural and learning difficulties.

Maths - I have been teaching key stage two maths privately since November 2007 and I am up-to-date with the curriculum and preparation needed for Key Stage Two SATS examinations.

Sociology - I have an A-Grade a-level in this subject and I am undertaking a sociological/political masters. I am happy to teach this subject up to a-level.

Entry Exams - This year I have also worked for Insight Education - a company which helps to prepare students for Oxbridge applications. I am very familiar with the Oxbridge application process for all subjects, and I am also preparing two students specifically for Oxbridge entrance for English Language and Literature. I am happy to advise on this.

Tutoring Approach:

My approach to tutoring is very much dependant on the student. I believe that different people are suited to different learning styles and therefore I always take the first couple of sessions to assess how a student likes to work and what their difficulties might be.

I like to set 'homework' tasks - even if they are very short - to encourage the student to develop the skills they are learning in their own time. I am happy to mark additional work and essays in my spare time and to e-mail students with any advice or feedback that they may require whilst working on a particular assignment.

About Scott:
I'm an approachable and easy going person who likes to bring enjoyment to learning.

Teaching Experience:

I've been teaching now for four years in a variety of subjects, including sociology, psychology and Adult Basic Skills numeracy and Key Skills Application of Number. My specialities are Sociology and Psychology at GCSE and A Level; however, I do have a strong understanding of the Adult Basic Skills numeracy and Key Skills Application of Number curriculum.

I am also an examiner for AQA (Sociology) and have an excellent understanding of the demands of this syllabus. Furthermore, I have a Masters Degree in Social Science Research Methods and I've also marked coursework for OCR; overall, I have an excellent understanding of the demands of coursework and coursework report writing.

Tutoring Approach:

I strongly believe that learning should be fun, rewarding and relevant to the learner; therefore, I plan my teaching sessions to be interactive and involve the learner at all times. I keep my personal talking to a minimum (unless further verbal tuition is requested / needed) and use a variety of exercises / learning methods that the learner undertakes.

I provide all materials such as handouts and worksheets etc for each session

About sofia:
I am an active person who has a lot of energy and a lot of patience for young people. I'm quite creative and have worked as an actress, dancer and puppeteer in the past which helps me a great deal in the classroom sometimes. I am keen to expand my knowledge and hope to study for a Master in International Relations this year.

Teaching Experience:

I have a year of solid teaching experience from a college in London; London Brookes College. I was effectively put in charge of history and sociology. I tutored one to one and small groups. I familiarised myself with a number of syllabuses but am confident to teach Ed Excel History and AQA sociology. In English i tutored and acted as a classroom assistant in large GCSE groups. I have built up mu confidence through this year and am happy in most teacher student situations now.

Tutoring Approach:

I am a very friendly person and like to think that i make the student feel comfortable. I believe in coming down to the students level to make them feel secure and not inhibited by their lack of knowledge. I enjoy discussions and finding out how each individual learns best and then working to their needs.

About Hannah:
My name is Hannah, and I have been a tutor for two years. I am a first year Law student at Sheffield Hallam University. Although I am 18 years old, and therefore quite young, I have found that this enables the student to feel more comfortable with me and my sessions. I have a friendly and approachable personality and I will teach all levels up to and including GCSE.

Teaching Experience:

I assisted in language classes in my secondary school for two years, giving one-on-one help and guidance when necessary. I also underwent training to teach guidance lessons to 14 year olds, and did so throughout last year. I have been a Cub leader for the previous four years, and so have plenty of experience with children.

Tutoring Approach:

I tailor each session according to the student's preferences and learning styles, and so lessons never grow stale and boring. I believe that the key to a student's success is to keep their interest levels up!

About Erman:
The subjects I would like to teach are Turkish, Politics, Philosophy and Sociology on which I have been studying for nearly 6 years in academic level. My BA degree is in Political Science and my MSc is in Political Theory (from LSE). At the moment I am a continuing PhD student in Humanities department at the University of London. I have voluntarily, academically and professionally taught in several subjects and I am preparing to be an academic lecturer mainly in Nietzsche, Kant, Aesthetics, Ethics and Political Philosophy.

Teaching Experience:

I have been working as a private tutor in Alphatutors since last year. But before that I was giving private courses in Politics, Philosophy and Turkish.

Tutoring Approach:

My approach to tutoring is both traditional and alternative since while I create outlines for each class and assign homework, I also apply non-conventional methods like discussing the logic of every rule in order to teach the student the substance or the core of the subject. This enables them to approach the subject and gives them power and motivation to interpret the questions or problems using the knowledge they acquire from the tuition.

About Jennie:
As a young and dynamic teacher with a genuine passion for my subject, I enjoy spending time in the classroom and sharing my enthusiasm with others. I am easy going and understand the flexibility that is essential when tutoring. As a committed and responsible individual, I can assure complete integrity and honesty in my tutoring.

There is no mountain too great if tackled with the right approach, positivity, some hard work .... and a cup of tea and a biscuit!

Teaching Experience:

I am currently Head of Psychology Department at a thriving Sixth Form. I have taught a range of exam boards, and am willing to tutor students studying for any exam specification. The advantage of being (relatively!) recently trained is that I am up-to-date with the latest specifications, and as an examiner for an exam board I am familiar with what the exam boards are looking for.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe that patience and understanding are key to being a successful tutor. These personal skills, coupled with a sound academic background, are integral to my approach to one-to-one tutoring. Every student is different, and I can tailor the sessions to suit each individual.

About Michael:
I have been a lecturer/tutor for the past 15 years at both university and A Levels. During this time I have also been an A Level examiner, a researcher for the Home Office on the use of strategic intelligence by UK law enforcement agencies, and a consultant lecturer on police cooperation at a European level. I have also had one book published on Europol, which is a European intelligence agency, as well as other academic articles. I have a keen interest in writing, and look forward to the opportunity to do more academic research and writing in the future.

Teaching Experience:

University of Surrey: Lecturer and tutor in European Politics and Sociology.
University of Kent: Visiting lecturer on Transnational Policing in Europe.
Open University: Tutor for course titled Understanding the Social Sciences.
Nelson Thornes Ltd: The delivery of tutorials via video-conferencing to A Level students across the country on Government and Politics, Sociology and Law.
Bramshill Police Staff College: Consultant Lecturer on police cooperation in Europe.
Private tutor: Government and Politics and History

Tutoring Approach:

One of my main aims in tutoring is to stimulate an interest in learning, by making the topic as relevant in contemporary terms as possible. Most of the subjects I tutor, from Politics to Religious Studies have current and on-going social repercussions. I have found that making an other wise dry topic of relevance to a student awakens an interest and desire to learn more. It is those Eureka moments when students become aware of the linkages between what they have read, and what is going on around them that makes tutoring particularly rewarding. This coupled with a growing ability to think critically, usually translates into enhanced exam grades.

Tutoring Approach:

I tailor my teaching style and approach to the individual or group of individuals. I have always found it easy to relate to people of all ages and walks of life. I am a firm believer that everybody learns differently and that the standard classroom approach does not suit all students. In class situations I have been known to make use of as many different learning techniques as possible, including film, television, music, literature and contemporary media issues to enliven topics, provoke debate and help students relate their learning to everyday experience. I aim to give as much support and feedback as possible with work undertaken while encouraging independent thinking and learning at every step of the way. I believe that if learning is as interesting and enjoyable as possible that great results will follow!
