About Sophie:
I am a University student currently in the final year of my degree, BSc (Comb Hons) Business Administration and Sociology.

I am a friendly, enthusiastic individual that have always connected well with the young people I have worked with.

I believe that tuition is a wonderful way for people to get the extra support they made need in certain topics. It builds confidence and gives someone the chance to get the thoroughly into a subject. With the ever increasing amount of exams in the Education system tuition can improve results and reduce exam stress.

Teaching Experience:

I have previously worked in a secondary school on a one to one basis with pupils there. While in this position I worked with pupils on behavioural and motivation issues. I tutored pupils on various subjects in particular English. This would everything from setting them tasks to build up essential skills (for example vocabulary or creative writing) to reviewing their homework and essay in more detail. I also set individual targets with them and provided information to help pupils plan their further education and/or future career.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe everyone can achieve the very best grades. It is simply a matter of find a way to relate to the topic.
Different people have different needs which is why tuition works so well. It allows work to be done at the ideal speed for the individual focusing on the areas that need work.

I also believe a positive attitude and some encouragement works wonders. Highlighting areas in a topic or skill where a person is doing admirably as well as pointing out areas that need work is essential in teaching.

About Frances:
I have strong background in AEN, adult learning disability and advocacy. My academic background is in Psychology and Sociology, so alongside my practical experience I have genuine theoretical insight into motivation, cognition and behaviour.

My main focus is to support self-esteem, irrelevant of the academic level is self-esteem. I am approachable, patient and understanding. Although I do have a strong academic background, I have had to work to gain this and I understand that one approach does not suit every student and I endeavour to understand the context of learning as well as the specifics of the subjects that the pupil requires support in.

Teaching Experience:

This is my 3rd year working in a secondary modern school for 3 years. For the first two years I worked 1-1 with AEN students. I specialised in statemented students with ADHD, ASD, dyslexia, non-specific learning disabilities. Most importantly, the majority of the students were disaffected - school refusers or students with severe behavioural problems. During this time I successfully taught Maths and French to students who were unable to access the mainstream classroom either through level of ability or behavioural problems. This included writing my own schemes of work, creating my own resources as well as the delivery.

Currently I work for 'Aimhigher' which is a government run scheme centred around the principles of widening participation. Alongside running this scheme in school, I teach in the 'Higher Education Transition Compact' in the 6th form and organise UCAS applications. I also mentor year 11 students who are either underachieving or who are on the 'Gifted and Talented cohort' who require extra support due to their ability.

Alongside this I have tutored a year 9 student who attends a grammar school. The focus of these sessions were to support here learning in Maths, French and Geography, but alongside this give support to her in terms of social and emotional issues.

Tutoring Approach:

My focus is always on supporting and encouraging self-esteem of the tutee. I feel it is important to get to know the student and their individual situation as part of the tutoring package to ensure that I can gauge the approach appropriately and design bespoke packages and differentiate it accordingly.

I take pride on my ability to prepare and deliver tutorial session that are bespoke for the individual's background and ability.

About Kirsty:
I am young, friendly, enthusiastic and experienced tutor. I have lived abroad for over 5 years so I am very open minded and value diversity.

I am currently completing an Msc in Community Learning and Development and enjoying it very much.

As a trained artist I enjoy making and exhibiting my work in Scotland. I am a very active person, I love snowboarding and rock climbing and I think my varied interests have stood me in good stead in my experience thus far - good analogies for teaching!

Teaching Experience:

Over four years teaching Art and English as a second language in Japan - to students aged 2 to 82!

In Japan I taught in both private and group settings and trained colleagues to facilitate learning. Experience of teaching business English and preparing students to sit TOEFL, IELTS and other English Language tests.

In the UK I have taught art and craft in children's classes and young people art school portfolio preparation.

I have extensive experience of working with children, young people and migrants in a community setting, teaching everything from global citizenship to outdoor education.

Tutoring Approach:

As an arts graduate I am extremely creative and like to apply this to my teaching.

While working in Japan I set up the community centre in which I worked and created the programme and curriculum according to the expressed needs of the students; I think this is very important - to respond to what the students wish to learn.

I am patient and tolerant of mistakes and attitudes, while encouraging and hopeful about progress. I am very laid back and like to have a joke - I would like to think that my students enjoy learning with me, as I have certainly enjoyed learning with them!

About Leona:
I am a self determined committed individual who enjoys encouraging & developing the successes of others. I am patient, honest & full of enthusiasm. Personally my own achievements include a degree & masters degree qualifying me to cover most areas of business topics such as maths & accounting. I have also studied other subjects such as English & sociology.

Teaching Experience:

I am a Masters graduate with experience of holding seminars in an academic setting, I tutor my own siblings & have also worked for the Lambeth youth council.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe that no topic is too hard or that individuals are unable to grasp concepts due to natural abilities, learning is about understanding and once understanding is achieved success is inevitable. I have too young siblings below the age of 12 so working alongside young children is definitely an environment that I am used too. My approach is to identify areas considered tricky & problematic & develop understanding in those areas as well as building on strengths. Confidence building is important as it is often confidence that stands between confusion & understanding.

About Matthew:
Hi

My name is Matthew Knott and I am 31 years old. I am a British citizen and I have recently returned to the UK after living and working in Tokyo. I am married with a young son. I attended Chatham Grammar School for Boys and the University of Leeds. As well as my teaching jobs I have worked in sales, the legal industry and local government.

I have several interests, including writing articles and reading. I love traveling and I have visited several countries, especially in Asia. I take a keen interest in a number of sports and in particular love football. I also enjoy playing the guitar and writing music.

Teaching Experience:

I have a number of years experience as an EFL tutor. I have worked in summer schools in England and Spain. Until March of 2008 I was living in Tokyo, where I taught at a private language school and at Waseda University, one of the largest and most prestigious universities in Japan.

I have taught a huge number of nationalities and also have experience of teaching every age-group from toddlers upwards. Additionally, I have had a number of private students for whom I taught English, Business English, Academic Writing, Politics, Current Affairs and Japanese.

I have a first class degree in Politics & Sociology from Leeds University as well as A-Levels in Sociology and History at Grade A and am comfortable tutoring these subjects as well.

Tutoring Approach:

I pride myself on being a very flexible tutor. In terms of EFL it is extremely important for me to find out clearly what the student`s purpose for studying is, their interests, strengths and weaknesses. After that I will choose, adapt and create appropriate materials to help the student develop.

I am comfortable teaching all aspects of the English language, plus any special requirements students may have. I can also offer an essay editing service for international students.

For academic subjects I can help with vocabulary, analysis, essay-writing, research skills and examinations techniques. I am happy to assist with any requirements or problems students may have. I am very enthusiastic about these students and hope I can pass on encouragement and enthusiasm to students.

With regards to Japanese I can teach basic skills, grammar, vocabulary and phonetics. I am also happy to teach Hiragana, Katakana and Kanji characters along with useful techniques for remembering and reading these.

I hope my lessons will be creative, constructive and enjoyable. I look forward to hearing from you.

Teaching Experience:

I have teaching experience with people of different ages- in addition I have experience working with children and adults with behavioral problems which has improved my interpersonal skills -making teaching / getting information across clearly easier.

I would like to make the subject I will be teaching interesting- to set appropriate and specific goals, to explain and describe things clearly, to promote participation and discussion. About Freya:
I am nineteen years old, and this means I have great familiarity with the current syllabuses for economics and sociology, having recently completed my A-levels. I also have a fresh knowledge of exam techniques and revision tactics. I am currently studying Philosophy and Politics at the University of York.

Teaching Experience:

I deal with problem areas, making information accessible and, dare I say, interesting!

About Erman:
The subjects I would like to teach are Turkish, Politics, Philosophy and Sociology on which I have been studying for nearly 6 years in academic level. My BA degree is in Political Science and my MSc is in Political Theory (from LSE). At the moment I am a continuing PhD student in Humanities department at the University of London. I have voluntarily, academically and professionally taught in several subjects and I am preparing to be an academic lecturer mainly in Nietzsche, Kant, Aesthetics, Ethics and Political Philosophy.

Teaching Experience:

I have been working as a private tutor in Alphatutors since last year. But before that I was giving private courses in Politics, Philosophy and Turkish.

Tutoring Approach:

My approach to tutoring is both traditional and alternative since while I create outlines for each class and assign homework, I also apply non-conventional methods like discussing the logic of every rule in order to teach the student the substance or the core of the subject. This enables them to approach the subject and gives them power and motivation to interpret the questions or problems using the knowledge they acquire from the tuition.
