About Janice:
I have been teaching for five years and have an open and approachable personality. I enjoy teaching on a one to one basis with all ages and try to build a friendly relationship with my student. I have young children of my own and know how important it is to choose the best person to fulfill your child's potential.

Teaching Experience:

I am a qualified teacher with five years experience. I work with young people on a one to one basis teaching English, basic literacy (reading and writing) and study skills. I specialise in teaching those with mild learning difficulties such as dyslexia, and have a wide experience of teaching adults as well as children. I can also offer support to those studying for GCSE English.

Tutoring Approach:

I am non-judgmental and allow students to work at their own pace, with no pressure. I tailor my teaching to accommodate the student's learning style including those with a more practical and creative nature. Students will learn best if they are doing something they enjoy, and I make use of educational games and quizzes, sometimes computer based, to reinforce learning. For adult learners I follow the Adult Literacy Core Curriculum as recommended by the government's Department for Children, Schools and Families.

About Kit:
Hi! My name is Kit. I'm a philosopher now moving into teaching. I'm profoundly enthusiastic about my subjects and passionate about teaching. Forced to pick out three of my qualities, they might be: the ability to listen and thoughtfully respond, diligence and dedication.

I've been fortunate enough to have a great education at Cambridge University, where I achieved the highest marks in my year (a 1st). Although my background is primarily Philosophy, I've also studied History at postgraduate and undergraduate level, and Experimental Psychology at undergraduate level. In addition, I can in tutor primary school students in English & Mathematics etc, and also help prepare for examinations including the 11+. I also speak passable Hindi. I'm now preparing for further study and hope to spend my life teaching.

I have recently been accepted by a reputed tuition company which interviews and vets their tutors, please contact for details. (They currently have insufficient work)

I have recently married a lovely lady and we live together in Cambridge.

Teaching Experience:

I have provided informal tuition of several undergraduate students at Cambridge University. This raised their marks: in one case from a predicted 3rd to a high 2:1.

As yet I have little experience of more formal tuition. This is the reason for my low prices.

Tutoring Approach:

Enthusiasm is vital to the success of any tuition. But you will also want a tutor who knows the topic inside out. This is necessary not to answer any difficult questions with accuracy and lucidity. Not only that, only someone with a firm grasp of a subject will be able to freely adapt the approach, the concepts and presentation of facts, to best suit the student. I believe that I have both qualities.
Below, I very briefly outline my general approach to providing tuition and some of the more practical 'nut & bolts' issues below. Please feel free to contact me for more details.

General Approach:
Throughout, three truths will be constantly kept in mind:
First, an interested student is a successful student. Learning can and should be a great pleasure at any age, although bad experiences or lack of confidence in the classroom can take away the joy. I will generate a supportive environment where the tutee feels comfortable to ask questions (even so-called silly ones). Difficult and abstract concepts will be translated into concrete examples relevant to the student and perhaps current affairs. My enthusiasm for these subjects will, I hope, be contagious.
Second, that students of all levels should be learning how to think (analyse, asses etc..) for themselves whilst learning or revising the subject itself . This, especially for GCSE and above, inevitably translates into good exam results. Whenever possible and appropriate tuition sessions will be focused on developing and clarifying the student's own ideas, providing them with the knowledge and ability to do so.
Finally, many students have insufficient confidence in their abilities. I want my students to feel confident that they are in control of their learning. Encouragement will be provided wherever appropriate, picking out the good in all the tutee's ideas. They will work hard, but at the end will have earned the right to feel extremely confident in their subject and in their academic work in general.

Nuts & Bolts:
Although I will be thoroughly acquainted and competent on the course curriculum and syllabus, tutoring will be tailored to the individual and flexible. A detailed programme will be worked out with the student, with input from parents as required.
Before agreeing to undertake any tuition, I would be much obliged if whoever is paying for the tuition, and/or a guardian if the tutee is under 18, would contact me. I am happy to do this by phone, or may be able to drop by for a meet & greet in person .
A course of tuition will start with a short chat to establish: what level the student is currently at; where they feel most confident and where the greatest challenges lie; which approaches are likely to fit their personality and desired learning style; what specific goals there are (if any); and what the would like to achieve through the tuition sessions.

About Marian:
I am a patient person yet I expect children to try their best. I encourage them to aim for their best. To aim for their full potential. I am able to build excellent relationships with those in my care due to my ability to listen to their needs and tutor and counsell them as well as teach them. Children cannot learn if they are troubled by things worrying them.

Teaching Experience:

I have taught at Primary level for some 6 years teaching English and Reading Skills. I taught pre school children for two years.I taught year one for three years. During this time I taught handwriting skills, early reading skills where children are introduced to letter sound correspondence where by they can break down words which they need to read.
I now teach students with learning difficulties. I teach basic skills as well as life skills. I teach cookery, road safety in the community, basic maths as well as basic english and writing skills. I am also at present teaching a child who is dyslexic.

Tutoring Approach:

I have worked on a one to one basis chidren previously and can stress how important it is to build a relationship with those in my care. I believe it is fundamentally important for lessons to be well planned, but flexible enough to include problems that may come up.

About Teresa:
I am a friendly and easy going person who believes that everyone has the ability to learn. I am passionate about the outdoors and through teaching in schools I have often used the outdoors as a learning environment.

I have a degree in music and my PGCE primary is a mathematics specialism, although I am happy to home tutor in all areas of the primary curriculum.

Teaching Experience:

I am a qualified primary school teacher with 6 years experience working in two contrasting primary schools. I am now employed teaching year 7's in a secondary school and working with young people who find learning challenging.

I have a current CRB and am a member of the General Teaching Council.

Tutoring Approach:

My primary approach to teaching is that if children are enjoying what they are learning then the information is more likely to be retained. I believe that it is important for a child to be involved in their own learning, encouraging the children to identify the areas that they are weaker in also enables the children to learn. By also finding the areas that the children are successful in and from there drawing out the skills that are making them successful and working with the child to transfer these skills in order to be achieve!

About Gemma:
I work and relate well to children and adults with a wide range of abilities and needs. I am an enthusiastic person who believes that every student has a voice that should be listened to. I also work as a writer and encourage creativity in my students. I am outgoing, confident and professional. I returned to education later on in life and believe that it is never too late to learn new things or discover new talents within oneself.

Teaching Experience:

I have worked as a tutor in the subjects of English Literature, English Studies, Creative Writing and Drama for 2 years. I have a proven track record of improving students grades and I have experience of working with students up to degree level.

Tutoring Approach:

I try to make my classes as fun as possible. I encourage learning using tools such as simple mind maps and different revision techniques. I have found that not only do my students grades improve but so does their essay writing and analytical skills. I always arrive at a tutoring class on time and I come prepared with work. I follow set texts that a student is working on at school/college/university to ensure that the knowledge and skills they gain from my teaching methods can be used to improve grades at their institution.

About David:
I have recently completed my A Level courses in Maths, Music and English at King Edward VI Grammar School in Chelmsford. I also Have an AS Level in French. I am enthusiastic about learning and love the satisfaction that comes from actually being able to see an improvement in a pupil. I have 4 AS Levels in General Studies (A), French (B), Music (A) and English (A) and am hoping to achieve As in English and Music in the Summer. I already hold an A Level in Maths (A) and 11 GCSEs which consist of 8A*s and 3As.

Teaching Experience:

I have been tutoring at GCSE Level for 2 Years and have always been eager to help others understand what is going on in a lesson or in other activities. Through my job at Wacky Warehouse I have had a lot of experience interacting with children and my youth also allows me to talk from more recent experience than others may be able to.

Tutoring Approach:

I don't believe that it is possible to have one approach to tutoring as every pupil is an individual and therefore needs to be catered for in a different way. Some pupils will react better to a laid back environment while others work better in an environment that is more obviously geared towards a strict regime of learning. It is because of this that is essential to judge each pupil on their merits and react to them accordingly.

About Frances:
I have strong background in AEN, adult learning disability and advocacy. My academic background is in Psychology and Sociology, so alongside my practical experience I have genuine theoretical insight into motivation, cognition and behaviour.

My main focus is to support self-esteem, irrelevant of the academic level is self-esteem. I am approachable, patient and understanding. Although I do have a strong academic background, I have had to work to gain this and I understand that one approach does not suit every student and I endeavour to understand the context of learning as well as the specifics of the subjects that the pupil requires support in.

Teaching Experience:

This is my 3rd year working in a secondary modern school for 3 years. For the first two years I worked 1-1 with AEN students. I specialised in statemented students with ADHD, ASD, dyslexia, non-specific learning disabilities. Most importantly, the majority of the students were disaffected - school refusers or students with severe behavioural problems. During this time I successfully taught Maths and French to students who were unable to access the mainstream classroom either through level of ability or behavioural problems. This included writing my own schemes of work, creating my own resources as well as the delivery.

Currently I work for 'Aimhigher' which is a government run scheme centred around the principles of widening participation. Alongside running this scheme in school, I teach in the 'Higher Education Transition Compact' in the 6th form and organise UCAS applications. I also mentor year 11 students who are either underachieving or who are on the 'Gifted and Talented cohort' who require extra support due to their ability.

Alongside this I have tutored a year 9 student who attends a grammar school. The focus of these sessions were to support here learning in Maths, French and Geography, but alongside this give support to her in terms of social and emotional issues.

Tutoring Approach:

My focus is always on supporting and encouraging self-esteem of the tutee. I feel it is important to get to know the student and their individual situation as part of the tutoring package to ensure that I can gauge the approach appropriately and design bespoke packages and differentiate it accordingly.

I take pride on my ability to prepare and deliver tutorial session that are bespoke for the individual's background and ability.

About Richard:
Eight years ago I left a dead-end job and embarked on private tutoring while I considered what to do next. I found myself tutoring the 11-year-old son of some friends, who needed help with reading and writing. The first thing I realised from my earlier teaching experience was that he was probably a dyslexic thinker. The second thing I realised was that nothing I was doing was helping him in the slightest.

I went looking for tools and came across Ronald Davis's book, "The Gift of Dyslexia". I tried some of the techniques described, saw immediate results and decided to train in the Davis methods professionally.

Life since then has become a roller-coaster. On a personal level, I have moved from being a fearful "plodder" with limited beliefs about himself to the Director of two learning companies with a passion for personal growth and empowerment.

I also have a keen interest in holistic health and nutrition, and am married with three sons.

Teaching Experience:

Assistant Housemaster and Head of German, Benenden School, Kent (1993 - 1998)
Director, Dyslexia Kent (formerly Centre for Natural Health and Learning), 2002 - 2007
Director, Davis Learning Foundation, 2003 - present
Director, The Learning People, 2007 - present

Tutoring Approach:

I form part of The Learning People, a community of learning specialists providing intensive one-to-one tutoring for children and adults with dyslexia, dyscalculia ("maths dyslexia"), dyspraxia and ADD. I can also help to unlock ability in modern languages and reading music.

We use the Davis methods - an approach based on the philosophy that dyslexia is rooted in talent rather than disability. While many approaches to dyslexia are remedial and drill-based, ours is explorative, finding new ways for an individual to master academic skill that work in harmony with his or her natural intelligence.

A typical programme is delivered in a 30 hour intensive block, with six additional hours available for follow-up sessions. Programme time is priced at 55 per hour, with credit finance options starting at 47 per month.

You are welcome to contact me for a free initial telephone consultation. I am only taking a limited number of new clients now, but will fit you in if I can.

About Damien:
I am a warm and friendly person and enjoy making my lessons fun and interesting. I like to get to know my students and want to make sure I can relate to them by using relevant resources and materials. I am passionate about the subjects I teach and have spent a lot of time creating lessons that can help each student to progress.
I am always open to suggestions on how to make my lessons better and want to help each person achieve their goals.

Teaching Experience:

I have a PGCE and over five years teaching experience. I have taught in both France and Germany and at language schools in the UK. In France I was a teaching assistant to students in primary, junior and secondary schools. In Germany I worked for a business school and taught English to adults. I have worked with adults from Libya and Saudi Arabia, teaching them English.
I currently teach literacy and numeracy to post 16 year old in Manchester.
I enjoy meeting new and different people and I like creating lessons that can motivate and encourage learners.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe it is vital that the student gets exactly what they want from their lesson. There is no point teaching information if the material is not relevant to the learner. I have sat in classrooms myself and not been motivated! I therefore always talk to my learners at the beginning of a course, find out what they want from the lessons, before I then plan the content.
Constant reviewing in lessons is critical in making sure the student is developing and I always get feedback from the learner to make sure I am doing my job properly.

About Helen:
I am 23 years old, recently having completed an MSc in Environmental Management. Previously, my first degree was a BSc in Molecular Biology. I am currently undertaking unpaid work for an environmental charity, BTCV. It is important to me to do something which I feel is worthwhile. This is why I have chosen to enter an environmental career path, and believe tutoring would be rewarding part-time experience for me, as well as valuable financial assistance.

Teaching Experience:

I have no specific teaching qualifications, however I do have experience of looking after children. I spent the summer of 2004 looking after 2 children (primary school age) full-time. I was also looked after by a nanny when I was younger, and as I grew older, I helped out a lot with the younger children. In my current position with BTCV, I am working with volunteers who are mostly adults with learning difficulties or mental health problems. I supervise and hand out tasks on an allotment, and teach them basic horticultural and nutritional skills.

Tutoring Approach:

Whilst I was at school, I myself had a tutor, when I felt my teacher wasn't covering exactly what was required. I think I have a suitable temperament for teaching, being a very patient and caring person.

About Laura:
My name is Laura and I am 26 years old. I am originally from Birmingham but now I live by the sea in Worthing with my partner Tim. I am an intelligent, creative person. I work in an office to pay the bills, but really I want to be a writer. I have an English Language and Literature BA from Oxford University and am currently working on the draft of a novel inspired by childhood and the sea.

Aside from writing, I love reading books, photography and watching films. I also like working with people, which is one of the (many) reasons why I enjoy tutoring. I have previous experience of working with young people, having mentored Year 8 pupils, worked with students interested in applying to university and coached Year 10 and 11 pupils through their English Language and Literature GCSE syllabus. I would ideally like more time to spend on writing my book and am in search of more rewarding paid work, hence my desire to tutor. I am fully CRB checked and available immediately.

Teaching Experience:

January - December 2005
Academic Coach
Employed by the ACES ('Academic Coaches Ensuring Success') Project and Sandwell LEA, I was part of a team providing additional support and learning opportunities for Key Stage 4 (15-16 year old) pupils at risk of underachieving at GCSE level.
The role involved working closely with targeted students on a one-to-one or small group basis, developing and delivering innovative study sessions designed to overcome barriers to learning and assist underachievers in fulfilling their potential. My specific academic focus was within the English Language and Literature GCSE syllabus.

February - August 2004
Project Officer for Oxford Colleges Admissions Office
Employed by Oxford University, I took on a six-month post as Project Officer for the Oxford-Dudley Partnership Project, a scheme which aimed to work with the Year 9 Gifted and Talented cohort of all schools in Dudley LEA in order to raise aspirations.
I also organized and ran a programme of 'Aspiration Days' for Year 8-11 pupils from schools across the country, aimed at encouraging applications from students from state school and/or underprivileged backgrounds, as well as speaking with Year 12 students interested in applying to university, providing specific information and advice regarding applications.

September 2002 - June 2003
Learning Mentor
Whilst still an undergraduate, as part of the National Mentoring Pilot Project (NMPP), I was a mentor to four Year 8 pupils, providing support and encouragement in an environment removed from the classroom. This took place in weekly one-hour sessions with the individual student for an entire academic year, charting their progress in terms of behaviour, confidence and attitude.

Tutoring Approach:

I am friendly, patient and passionate about my subject. I am sensitive to the needs of others and strive to tailor sessions to suit the needs of the tutee. I am relaxed and enthusiastic when tutoring and aim to build confidence as well as increase knowledge and understanding.

About Lauren:
I am very patient and good with people of all ages. I achieved very high grades in my GCSEs (4A*s and 6As) and A Levels (3As and a B). I live opposite Manchester Grammar School, which would be very useful if I were to tutor somebody from this school, as travel for the pupil would be very easy.

Teaching Experience:

Tutoring and mentoring troubled and struggling children aged between 13-17 at an underprivileged school in Slough, helping them not only with their school subjects, but with decisions about their futures such as subjects to take and just generally keeping them out of trouble.

Tutoring Approach:

I consult with the parents beforehand to see how they would prefer I went about tutoring their child, but generally I like to build up a rapour with the child so that they feel what I am teaching or helping them with applies to them and so that they feel comfortable and willing to learn from me. I am young which helps with this, as the pupils do not feel as though they are being tutored by someone who does not or cannot understand them. I am kind and patient but also firm and disciplined. After finding out the topics needed to be covered, I assign parts of these, or the topics as a whole to a session and go through it so that it is easy to understand, before working through examples with the student and then overseeing and helping them to work through them by theirselves until they feel comfortable with the content.

About Lydia:
After attending a top grammar school for seven years, I graduated from the University of Exeter two years ago with a degree in Economics. Since then I have spent a year working in Recruitment and 6 months in Accounting.

Born to Spanish parents in London, I have been brought up speaking the language fluently but also have the technical skills required in examinations, having taken the subject at GCSE, A-Level and also completed modules during my degree course.

Mathematics was always my best subject and I completed my A-Level in one year, achieving an A grade.

In my spare time, I like to paint and travel.

Teaching Experience:

Although I have no formal training in tutoring, it is something I have always wanted to do. I always found helping siblings and friends challenging and rewarding. There is nothing like seeing a person realise they can do something they never thought they could.

Tutoring Approach:

My approach is to instil the student with the confidence to fulfil their potential, whether in a subject they are already good at, or one that they struggle with.

About Leona:
I am a self determined committed individual who enjoys encouraging & developing the successes of others. I am patient, honest & full of enthusiasm. Personally my own achievements include a degree & masters degree qualifying me to cover most areas of business topics such as maths & accounting. I have also studied other subjects such as English & sociology.

Teaching Experience:

I am a Masters graduate with experience of holding seminars in an academic setting, I tutor my own siblings & have also worked for the Lambeth youth council.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe that no topic is too hard or that individuals are unable to grasp concepts due to natural abilities, learning is about understanding and once understanding is achieved success is inevitable. I have too young siblings below the age of 12 so working alongside young children is definitely an environment that I am used too. My approach is to identify areas considered tricky & problematic & develop understanding in those areas as well as building on strengths. Confidence building is important as it is often confidence that stands between confusion & understanding.
