| About Rashid: I am a well travelled man who is always here to help. This travelling and my family background gave the chance to learn about new countries and their regions. I like journalism and therefore I do read newspapers and write some thoughts on major political events. I also volunteer for a magazine based in London |
Teaching Experience: I have worked as an instructor for a famous school of languages named Berlitz. I planned lessons for young children to adults. I also taught one-to-one students English, French and English. |
Tutoring Approach: I would like to offer the best help possible towards learning. I believe that teaching in case of languages is about encountering new cultures new horizons. I hope to introduce lessons about culture, traditions as well as basic grammar. I will not forget the fun part in learning a new language that helps building up confidence in speaking it. |

| About Zoe: I'm 22, a friendly postgraduate student of International Relations at Oxford University with an academic background in Philosophy, Politics, Economics, English Language and Social Sciences. I enjoy tutoring all ages and am available to tutor in the Oxfordshire and Hampshire areas as well as online. |
Teaching Experience: I've previously taught at secondary and 'A' Level abroad for a four month period and I have experience informally tutoring at GCSE and A Level. |
Tutoring Approach: My tutoring style is relaxed and informal. I'm particularly used to coaching to boost exam performance (GCSE, A Level) and assisting with homework and classwork difficulties. However, as an Oxbridge graduate (and postgraduate) I'm also happy to tutor those that would like to be challenged beyond their school syllabus - for personal enjoyment as well as to help with university entrance! |

| About Josh: I am a 26 year-old PhD student at the University of Edinburgh. I have lived in Edinburgh since September 2006. Most recently I have lived in Oxford where I studied for 6 years. I enjoy meeting people, learning with them and opening up new horizons for my tutees. |
Teaching Experience: Oxford University, Tutor in Latin, 2005-2006 The Tutors Group, Tutor in Theology, Classics, Ethics and English, 2005 to present Private Tuition, Latin, 1998 to present |
Tutoring Approach: Teaching and learning have shaped my daily experience of life for as long as I can remember. I consistently find the process of receiving and passing on knowledge and understanding both enriching and fun. The process can be difficult at times. Perhaps a pupil will find a particular area of learning a tough battle. I find these occasions all the more significant because I know that the pupil will remember them as milestones from which she or he can draw strength and encouragement. The core of Classics, English and Religious Studies act as a gateway for entry into the most wonderful array of language, literature, culture and human experience. Attention to grammatical detail combined with a breadth and depth of understanding of the world within which the language and thought-forms operate will smooth the path of each student. To act as a gatekeeper and guide on the way is a pleasure which, though sometimes hard-going, is always worth attaining. On a more personal level, I enjoy spending time with students of whatever age, getting to know how they learn best and how I can serve them in their education. I have taught ten year olds, teenagers and undergraduates and can confidently say that all students will have some similar challenges to face and strengths to deploy; but all students will also have their own particular obstacles and ways of overcoming them. Understanding these elements of a person's character and educational DNA, working with them and setting them meaningfully within the context of other curricular and extra-curricular activities is one of the most exciting and important ventures we can undertake. |

| About Marc: I have just graduated with a Bachelors degree in International Politics and Intelligence studies. I am currently undertaking a Masters degree in International Law, due for completion in July 2009. At school I studied Maths and Science at A-level, in addition to French and Arabic in my spare time. Aside from my academic life, I am the musical director at a local church and enjoy rock climbing and snowboarding. |
Teaching Experience: I have taught students up to GCSE level in Maths, Science, Politics and French. I have also participated in peer mentoring schemes whilst at university in order to assist my academic peers in formulating their dissertation theses. |
Tutoring Approach: Identify basic weaknesses which may serve as a barrier when addressing more complex problems. Ensure a sound and coherent knowledge base, and encourage students to exercise initiative and logic to use what they know to address what they do not. In all cases, examine multiple solutions to problems to remove demarcation points in the context of wider subject knowledge. |

| About Donna: I am a final year PhD student with lots of teaching experience. I particularly enjoy teaching students on a one-on-one basis, although I am also happy to teach in small groups. |
Teaching Experience: I have in-depth teaching experience as an Associate Lecturer at the Open University. I have taught people of all ages and from different backgrounds (age, culture/language, educational background), as well as working with young people at schools and colleges. I am also a Specialist Skills Tutor, helping young people to progress academically via the building of skills. I pay particular attention to English and grammar, writing and study skills, exam revision, confidence building and public speaking. I have a Teaching English as a Foreign Language qualification, and am therefore happy to teach people aiming to improve their English skills. |
Tutoring Approach: I believe the best approach to tuition is round table discussion and working through study tasks (a variety of written, spoken and interactive tasks, taking into account the needs and skills of the student). Thus, after identifying areas to be worked on, the student and I will work through appropriate exercises in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere, therefore facilitating academic progression while building confidence. |

Types of Tutoring: Travels to you
| About William: I currently study single honours history at the University of Glasgow, having previously studied history, politics and philosophy at university level and gaining 4 A passes at Higher level. I am entering my third year of a four year MA degree, with a view to earning an eventual doctorate in history. I am nearly 20 years old and stay on my own in the southside of Glasgow, and I split my time between my studies and work relating to my studies (watching documentaries, reading books and articles et cetera) and more social activities, such as working out, playing football and going out to clubs. |
Teaching Experience: As a young man, I have relatively little tutoring experience, although I previously tutored a pupil studying Higher Modern Studies, and over the course of 3 months we together managed to raise her grade to a very well-deserved B. |
Tutoring Approach: I fully realise that the first thing many parents look for in tutors is a list of qualifications. I may not be able to provide as comprehensive a list of qualifications as an older tutor, but I feel I make up for that with something just as important: the ability to relate to young people. To me, a good tutor isn't defined by how much he or she knows, but rather how they can engage and enthuse their tutee, and help them to grasp the issues surrounding the subject they are studying. The first step towards learning is to have a willing attitude. Many students who have difficulty in certain subjects feel a particular resentment towards it and find it hard to motivate themselves to study it. I know this because I went through the same thing when studying mathematics at school, and it was only through the help of a very patient, friendly tutor that I managed to pass my maths examination. As a younger tutor, I will perhaps be able to help a pupil by explaining and teaching a subject to them in a more relaxed, laid-back enviroment. This doesn't mean that the work will be easy, or that sessions will be lazily-planned, it means simply that I will treat the pupil as an equal, and teach them in a different way than perhaps they would learn in a classroom. Whilst school is undoubtedly a hugely influencial and important part of a pupil's learning experience, it seems to follow that if they are having problems with a subject, then the teaching style they are receiving at school is not beneficial to them, and that a different approach is needed. I understand that as a parent or guardian, you have your child's best interests at heart and that picking a tutor is an important decision which is not to be taken lightly. I am therefore willing to offer my first session for free, in order to allow the parents and the pupil to assess my abilities as a tutor in a manner which will cost them no money. |

Types of Tutoring: Travels to you
| About Matthew: I am currently doing a PhD in Politics at the University of Sheffield, comparing small countries in the developing world. My principal area of research is International Political Economy. I also have an MA in politics, a BA (Hons) degree in French and Politics, and A-Levels in French, History and Economics. I speak French fluently and have spent a lot of time in the Francophone world - in France itself, Quebec, and the French Caribbean. I'm an approachable, friendly, lively and interesting person, and in my spare time enjoy good food, travelling the world, music, film and sport. |
Teaching Experience: I have significant teaching experience, and am comfortable tutoring people across the age and ability spectrum. I currently teach undergraduate courses in politics at the University of Sheffield in British Politics, Globalisation, International Political Economy, Democratisation and Development. I have a great deal of A-level tutoring experience and have successfully helped a number of students through their exams. I have experience of supply teaching (11-16) as well as of teaching younger children in after-school French clubs. I have also taught English to French children as a private tutor when I lived abroad and I am highly capable in the pastoral side of teaching, having worked on a summer camp in the United States. |
Tutoring Approach: My approach to tutoring is an active one. Unless absolutely necessary, I seek to avoid the use of textbooks in favour of maintaining an energetic, often discussion-based lesson tailored to each individual client. Indeed, I feel strongly that it is only through relevant lessons which really fire the client's imagination, and which, above all, are fun, that real learning is achieved. My advertised rates also include the setting of homework and marking it. Particularly for economics and politics, I feel that it is important to get into the habit of exam/essay practice. So, every week I will set you an original task to do, and part of each lesson will be devoted to going through your work to give feedback and help improve your technique. I am happy to tutor people of all ages and all abilities. I am happy to teach small groups of people, such as adults learning holiday French or teenagers grappling with GCSEs, with absolutely no supplement to the hourly rate. I am happy to tutor French up to A-Level standard. For humanities-based subjects (history and economics) I can also give tuition up to A-Level. For politics however, I am happy to go beyond A-Level and give help to undergraduate and postgraduate (MA) students. For further information, or just to chat and explore whether I might be able to help you, please feel free to get in touch. |

| About Mhairi: I'm 19 years old and I'm originally from Stonehaven, just south of Aberdeen but during term time at university I live in Aberdeen. I am just about to finish my first year at the University of Aberdeen, where I study Psychology. I hope to finish my four year degree and then go on to do my postgraduate diploma in education, in order to become a teacher. |
Teaching Experience: I have no teaching experience in any official role, but I have worked with children before in an after-school club, where I did occasionally help with homework. I also tutored my younger brother for his Standard Grade exams. I was also Prefect and a House Captain at Mackie Academy, which involved a high level of organisation and communication, and working with younger pupils. |
Tutoring Approach: Every student is different, and learns in different ways; some take in pictures better than words or vice versa, for example. Learning shouldn't be a chore, it should be enjoyed in order to be retained. Also, there should be a rapport between the student and the tutor; if they don't get along well enough, the student won't learn as well, and may not feel comfortable enough to ask questions if they don't understand. |

| About Katherine: My name is Katherine Nobbs, and I'm a 26-year old graduate currently living in London. I am employed full-time by the European Centre for Minority Issues, a minority rights advocacy organization, where responsibilities range from coordination of major publications to conflict resolution work in European neighbourhood states, such as Kosovo and Georgia. I also receive funding from the University of Cambridge to act as a consultant on individual projects. I have spent five years in higher education and have studied in depth a range of subjects, notably, politics, government, international relations and law. I have performed to a consistently high standard in all areas and at all stages of my academic career. I have also debated in competitions at national and international level. |
Teaching Experience: While I have no formal teaching experience, I have spent over 60 hours leading seminars at university level. I have also taught debating classes to students of the College of Law and the Middle Temple. |
Tutoring Approach: I am passionate about the subjects I have studied and would relish the opportunity of engaging with students at all levels. I pride myself on being well-prepared for new challenges and would approach tutoring with the same dedication and enthusiasm that I have applied to other areas of my academic and professional life. I believe that a good tutor should understand the challenges of approaching a new subject, or of mastering an old one, and encourage and stimulate their student accordingly. I do not believe in an approach to education that criticises rather than rewards. If a student was unresponsive, I would endeavour to find new approaches that spoke to the individual more directly. In cases where a student grasped the material readily, I would be delighted to stretch her or his capabilities with more complex material, even if this was slightly outside the relevant curriculum, although this would of course be pending the approval of their parent or guardian. |

| About Michael: I have been a lecturer/tutor for the past 15 years at both university and A Levels. During this time I have also been an A Level examiner, a researcher for the Home Office on the use of strategic intelligence by UK law enforcement agencies, and a consultant lecturer on police cooperation at a European level. I have also had one book published on Europol, which is a European intelligence agency, as well as other academic articles. I have a keen interest in writing, and look forward to the opportunity to do more academic research and writing in the future. |
Teaching Experience: University of Surrey: Lecturer and tutor in European Politics and Sociology. University of Kent: Visiting lecturer on Transnational Policing in Europe. Open University: Tutor for course titled Understanding the Social Sciences. Nelson Thornes Ltd: The delivery of tutorials via video-conferencing to A Level students across the country on Government and Politics, Sociology and Law. Bramshill Police Staff College: Consultant Lecturer on police cooperation in Europe. Private tutor: Government and Politics and History |
Tutoring Approach: One of my main aims in tutoring is to stimulate an interest in learning, by making the topic as relevant in contemporary terms as possible. Most of the subjects I tutor, from Politics to Religious Studies have current and on-going social repercussions. I have found that making an other wise dry topic of relevance to a student awakens an interest and desire to learn more. It is those Eureka moments when students become aware of the linkages between what they have read, and what is going on around them that makes tutoring particularly rewarding. This coupled with a growing ability to think critically, usually translates into enhanced exam grades. |

| About Short: I am currently completing my PhD in law at the University of Bristol. |
Teaching Experience: I have been a tutor in the School of Law at the University of Bristol for 4 years I have been a private tutor since 1998 (during the period in which I was studying for my A Levels). |
Tutoring Approach: My approach to tutoring is generally flexible depending on the needs of the student. As a private tutor I tend to take a more 'results focused' approach as this is often the aim of the private tuition. I would like to think that I am a friendly yet professional tutor and it is certainly reported that I am very approachable. |

| About Tommaso: I am an Italian mother-tongue speaker who has had plenty of experience overseas. I spent 12 years in Brussels, where I learned French. My university education consisted in a B.A. in Philosophy and Politics from Warwick University and a Master's Degree in Political Theory from the London School of Economics. I have had some experience teaching English to Italians when living in Rome. I believe I am qualified enough to teach Italian at any level and conversational French. Furthermore I am also able to offer tutoring in Philosophy and Politics. |
Teaching Experience: I have given English conversation lessons while living in Rome. References available upon request. |
Tutoring Approach: I offer a down to earth approach, hoping to generate interest in the subject. I have always had a good relationship with my former students, and believe that my interpersonal skills will be able to make this continue. Depending on the specific situations, I might vary my methods. I believe to be qualified enough to teach Italian and French; Philosophy, Politics, and R.E. Prices are negotiable. |

Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / Online
| About Sian: I've been working as a tutor for over seven years since obtaining an MSc in Latin Ameircan Politics from the University of London. My methods vary according to the student's needs, each student is an individual and the one-to-one environment is perfect for getting to know the subject thoroughly. As an experienced traveller and writer/novelist I try to take the subject out of the text book and bring it to life. Enthusiasm isn't everything but it makes a great difference and I like to think my passion for the subjects I teach is infectious. The emphasis is on learning in a relaxed and pleasant environment, teaching and learning are far more effective if both tutor and student are enjoying the experience. Rember, it's not school and a tutor is not a teacher. It's our job to fill in the gaps and instill lost confidence - 'positive reinforcement', as Piaget said. I can't guarantee everyone a grade A or A*, but I will bring out the best in you. |
Teaching Experience: Experienced not only as a tutor but in many other fields such as writing and travel. I've been teaching since 2000 and as well as personal one-to-one tuition I've taught in adult education and pre-school Spanish. Every year I take a dozen or more students through the exam process at both GCSE and A level. I have an extensive knowledge of the specifications of the main exam boards and, having marked papers in the past, I know what examiners are looking for. A lot of it's about technique, it's certainly not rocket science. There are plenty of ways in which the student can improve his or her grades by learning a few simple rules about exam techniques but silly mistakes can cost dear. I can still remember the words of my A level geography teacher, many years ago: 'you don't fail exams on what you don't know, you fail on what you thought you knew but didn't.' I've long since learned to leave no stone unturned. |
Tutoring Approach: Enthusiasm and attention to detail. I don't do second-best! I don't do clock-watching, quality is more important than quantity, I charge per lesson, not per hour an if takes more than sixty minutes to get the message home I'll stay until the penny's dropped, so to speak, and won't charge any more. Tuition isn't cheap, it's imperative that the student gets value to money. It is, after all, their future. |

| About Alexandra: I am a DPhil (PhD) student in philosophy at the University of Susex. Previously, I studied for a Master's Degree in Political Theory at the London School of Economics and Political Science (L.S.E.), and a BA in Media Studies. Given my interdisciplinary background, I have a flexible and open-minded and creative attitude to study, all the while ensuring targets are met and progress is made, regardless of training or level. I am multilingual and can relate to a variety of ethnic backgrounds, given my teaching and own immigration experience. |
Teaching Experience: I have taught students of different levels and abilites and have always have great success in helping them achieve their goals. I have worked with my last student, a Media Studies undergraduate, towards her final -year dissertation, which achieved a first class grade, despite the provisional fail grade before private tuition started. I have maintained a friendly, relaxed relationship with former students. I have also taught my younger brother consistently throughout the years. |
Tutoring Approach: I believe education is one of the most important endeavours in life. Given this, a passion for personal learning, and a committment to helping students achieve success, I am particularly fond of teaching. The interaction and creativity involved in exploring new ideas and ways to see the world means I relish the teaching experience, whereby horizons are expanded mutually. I am constantly developing new skills and approaches to engage students on both professional and personal levels. |

| About Elizabeth: I am a gap year student who is going to York University in 2008 to study history and politics. I can offer private tuition in history, politics, geography and law, in preparation for GCSE, AS and A level exams. I am an organised, committed, reliable and enthusiastic individual who enjoys working with children and young adults, helping them to develop their understanding and interest in a variety of subjects. |
Teaching Experience: For several years whilst I was at school I was an enthusiastic volunteer for Fun Fizzical, a movement and dance group organized by Lewisham council for disabled children and their siblings. As a volunteer, part of my responsibility was to teach and help children to develop their basic language and numeracy skills, whilst ensuring that a stimulating and exciting environment was created for them. I found it a very rewarding and humbling experience, which taught me valuable skills such as patience, sensitivity and commitment, whilst developing my skills in teamwork and communication. In addition to this during my work experience, where I worked at the Tower of London and Hampton Court, I conducted independent historical research, which I then used to plan educational sessions, geared to school children, of various ages and abilities. It was necessary to ensure that the material collected was not only historically accurate but also easy to understand and enjoyable to learn about, helping the children to develop an interest in different periods of history. |
Tutoring Approach: Whilst tutoring I would pay particular attention to the needs of each student, and tailor their study courses to best meet their needs and wishes. My approach to tutoring emphasises clarity, flexibility, and an enthusiasm for learning, within an informal and relaxed yet structured and interactive environment. I would encourage students to think imaginatively and challenge themselves academically, encouraging debate and broadening their horizons. This would not only help to improve a child's examination technique but also their academic development. |

| About Thomas: I am a final year international relations student at the univesity of sussex, with an average of 70 for the first two years. During my time at sussex i have taken courses in development studies, history, politics, spanish and geography but also have a background from A-level in math, physics and economics. |
Teaching Experience: I have no official teaching experience, but have an informal knowledge of teaching as my mother and brother are physics and maths teachers respectively, as well as helping my cousins with GCSE and A level revision session. I feel as though i have picked up some skills beneficial to tutoring through discussions with my family as well as from teaching friends to snowboard whilst on holiday and when friends visited me in a French ski resort when i lived there. |
Tutoring Approach: My approach to tutoring is centered around a solid understanding of the syllabus and building confidence by starting with concepts central to the course and then building on this by focusing on the areas that the tutee feels as though they would most like to work on together. |

Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / From their home / Online
| About Barbara: I am an experienced personal tutor who has recently completed a law degree at Oxford University and have gone onto further study as a postgraduate in Bristol. I would like to think that my education reflects a high level of achievement that qualifies me as an ideal candidate for a personal tutor role. Throughout my studies, I have offered my services as a personal tutor to students at varying stages of their education. I would like to believe that my method of teaching has been highly beneficial to my students and I am in possession of the requisite communication skills to deliver real results. I have enjoyed teaching Law, up to degree level, English Language & Literature, Government & Politics, Psychology and Sociology up to A-level standard. I offer up to GCSE standard all of the above, along with the Sciences, Mathematics and History. Aside from enjoying my students success, I enjoy the teaching itself and I believe that this enthusiasm is crucial in order to truly engage with a student and ensure they are reaching their full potential. I am currently studying for an LLM (Masters in Law) at Bristol University. I have a 2.1 degree in the law, obtained in June 2008 from Wadham College, Oxford University, I went to Oxford following a change of heart during my medicine degree at Sheffield University, where I picked up the qualification of 1st MB on successful completion of the foundation year. As such, I have taken the equivalent of Biology, Chemistry and Physics A-Level to add to the A-Levels in English Language and Literature, Sociology and Psychology I already achieved. I should make the point that my A-Levels were studied and completed over the course of one year, and I gained A grades in all of them, along with 100% scores in most of the papers. My focus in law has primarily fallen on public law, my Masters itself specialises in international law and as such I have extensive knowledge of the principles underlining British government and politics. I also have experience working for both the British and European Parliament. To summarise and conclude, I feel very fortunate to have received the education that I did and I look forward to continuing to use it for the benefit of others. Availability: I am available most days as the level of independent study required by Bristol means that my time is fairly flexible. I am also happy to give lessons either in my own home or the student's. I live with my partner in a house in the 'Suffolks' area of Cheltenham and we have a large designated study room which is kept clean, tidy and warm! |
Teaching Experience: I have extensive experience in offering personal tutor services. I started a the age of 16, where I was fortunate enough to help an 8 year old dyslexic boy manage his condition. After one week, he had for the first time learnt to write his name and address. On the back of his parents recommendations, I picked up a number of students of different ages and abilities and taught up to Key Stage 3. As my own education progressed, so did the level of syllabus I was qualified to teach and, following my entry into Oxford, I felt more qualified to teach at the higher levels. I have had experience in preparing students for GCSEs, A-levels and entrance exams, along with basic numeracy and literacy tests and, particularly in the case of the law, aiding professionals such as social workers, progress in their field. |
Tutoring Approach: One of the obvious advantages of obtaining the services of a personal tutor is that the student can have the lesson moulded to fit their own needs, rather than being subject to a more generic approach in the classroom. Therefore, I believe that a good personal tutor is one who recognises these needs, understands the students and has the flexibility of approach to adapt accordingly and I, relying upon the feedback of previous students, believe I can offer this. As such, I wouldn't say I necessarily had one style of teaching, rather an open-minded approach to whichever student is being taught. In order to do this, however, excellent communication and interpersonal skills are required, and I think I am in possession of them. In short, I can bring with me a high level of academic ability along with a friendly and flexible approach to teaching that is entirely student-focused. |
