About Andrew:
Hi,

My name is Andrew and I am a fully qualified primary teacher with a B.Ed (HONS) from Lancaster University. I achieved qualified teacher status in 1992 and my most recent police records check was successfully undertaken within the past three months.

I have thirteen years experience as a teacher with the last nine years in Europe teaching English as a second language at secondary level. I am at present teaching in an excellent primary school in north London.

I have worked for two years as a professional photographer dealing with fashion shoots for magazines but am more qualified to teach English at all levels although I am not interested in teaching to the G.C.S.E.'s, teaching english to adults from the baltic states or Russia is however very interesting as is primary level work.

Group discounts or bulk discounts can be discussed, please feel free to get in touch to discuss your needs and to tell me what kind of level you feel yourself to be on.

Andrew

Teaching Experience:

Four years primary experience at primary level in England.

About Erskine:
I enjoy a variety of social activities. Keeping fit is important to me and I have a passionate interest in racket sports and Indoor Rowing where I have previously held both a British and a World Record/Ranking. I enjoy socialising and get great pleasure from cooking for others whilst sharing my recording interests in music and visual arts like landscape photography for which I have had 70 exhibitions over the last 25 years. Writing is something that I have a strong interest in and I will often read and write about a variety of social and psychological interests. Sometimes, I work as a commercial photographer and a personal trainer and engage as a internet relationship counsellor.

Teaching Experience:

I am a Learning Support Tutor with a Sports and Behavioural Therapy background. Currently working in Further Education and YOP, delivering a variety of educational projects and courses for learners, some with a range of mental health issues or Special Educational Needs in: - Life & Basic Skills, ECDL and General ICT, Digital and Conventional Photography, Health & Fitness, Creative & Positive Thinking.

My educational responsibilities have included local projects which I have undertaken, and have seen a large increase over previous student usage of the E-Learning resources I have created covering a 3yr period. Within these projects, this has produced for those students an average pass mark of 83%, where 96% have achieved at least the National Curriculum Level 1 standard or higher. This reflection is seen within all of my taught subjects over successive academic years. I like to use my educational and psychology skills either on a one to one basis or small group settings to raise the expectations and achievement for all my learners regardless to any Special Educational Needs.

Tutoring Approach:

My background in Sports and Behavioural Therapy coupled with my Continuous Professional Development in Education has helped me develop both managerial skills and experience in working with learners with specific learning difficulties. I support the education of any learner with a language, cultural or specific difficulties in both written and spoken English and provide, flexible and specialist teaching or support within an open learning classroom for designated and assessed learners who may be recognised as a learners with Downs Syndrome, Aspergers Syndrome, ADHD, Dyslexia or Specific Learning Difficulties and Emotional Behavioural Disorders.

About Colin:
I left teaching about 3 years ago after establishing and running the A Level course, which had up to 80 students at any one time, for 10 years. I'm married and we have recently moved from London to Piddinghoe, just outside Peacehaven, 6 miles from Lewes and Brighton. I have started a return to taking photographs for myself now that I don't spend every working hour encouraging and inspiring others in a full time job. I prefer to use the skills I have to work with individuals or small groups. I love the medium and love helping others to appreciate what it is and what it can do... and how they too can enjoy it.

Teaching Experience:

10 years as Course Leader in A Level Photography for the LaSWAP 6th Form Consortium, based in Parliament Hill School, Camden, London.

2 years running an adult evening class.

Tutoring Approach:

The first session would be just a chat to see where you are and what you hope to get out of this. I am not a technical whizz and won't bombard you with too much jargon, although I have a fair knowledge of both digital and 'traditional' methods - I don't emphasise this side of things except as a means to an end. But sometimes you really are better off knowing your aperture and speed controls and what the camera can do when it's not on automatic - it allows you more control, more creativity and more possibilities. We can take things at your pace as necessary, depending on what you want to achieve. The emphasis must be on enjoyment otherwise it becomes a chore. I would hope that your interests would lead us: if you like sport, let's learn about photography by photographing that, if it's gardening, well let's see what grows out of that!

About Catherine:
Hi!
My name is Catherine and I have come over to Bristol from Canada to finish my degree in International Business. I am 23, reliable, fun, and very enthusiastic! Though I am not seeking a career in teaching, I very much enjoy working with children and young adults to perfect their academic and other various skills. Growing up, I often helped my mother in her classes as she taught English, French, and fitness and always loved seeing the looks on kids' faces when they finally "got it". : )

Teaching Experience:

I have tutored privately on and off for the last 5 years, mostly to elementary school-aged children. Though less related, I have also been a swim instructor for 6 years and as such understand anxiety and fear that students are often faced with when learning. But eventually, it just becomes second nature!

Tutoring Approach:

In working with children and young adults, I do my best to gain an understanding as to the type of approach that will best suit the individual. Everyone learns differently, at different speeds, and is motivated by different goals. The key is to identify those elements and utilize them as efficiently as possible. Whether a student needs help preparing for a test and feels anxious, or can't seem to fully grasp a topic without spending a bit more time at home working through it, there are always methods through the madness. I am patient and understand the learning process, and am willing to put forth a great deal of effort to make the student comfortable and relaxed (and smiling!) as this is the only way to improve!

About Evenstar:
I am a 32 year old American expat documentary filmmaker and freelance media producer. I have been living in the United Kingdom for four years. I originally came here to do my Masters degree at Goldsmiths College, University of London in Documentary Filmmaking and decided to stay on. I have spent my time in the United Kingdom attaining a Masters degree, working as a Multi Media and Film Tutor and working in freelance Media Production. I consider myself to be outgoing, friendly, understanding and compassionate. I like working with both children and adults alike in a creative, fun and open way.

Teaching Experience:

I have spent over two years teaching young disabled adults filmmaking and media skills. During this time I taught my students how to make music videos, Film editing skills, film history, Lighting and sound techniques and script writing skills.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe that tutoring needs to be tailored to an individuals needs and way of learning. Everyone learns differently so therefore everyone needs to be taught differently. When I take on a new tutee the first thing I do is spend a bit of time getting to know that person and to access the ways that they like to learn and what it is that they want to learn. I then work with that person to help them achieve their goals. I believe it is important to check regularly with a tutee to make sure that they have an understanding of what is being taught. I also believe that learning should be fun and that it is important for a tutee to be able to grasp how what they are learning will be useful in the real world. If it is filmmaking or photography that I am teaching then I try to make as much of it as possible come from a hands on approach. The best way to learn is by doing. If it is art history that is being taught I believe the best way to do this is by actually going out, when possible, and seeing real art in real museums rather than looking at it in a book. This is how I first began learning about the subject and what inspired me to study it.

About Zangmo Denise:
I am a qualified Art Teacher and professional artist with specialist knowledge of Drawing, Painting, Digital Photography and Graphic Design. I offer tuition in all art media including pencil, charcoal, pastel, watercolour, oils, acrylics, collage, mixed media, digital photography and Photoshop. Everyone is welcome from absolute beginner to advanced, including those seeking exam coaching.

Teaching Experience:

I am a qualified Art, Craft and Design teacher with 24 years experience teaching all ages, levels and abilities in Schools, Colleges and in the community. I have been teacher in charge of all the Art and Design Technology curriculum in a Primary School, have taught A Level Art to adults and have been appointed Reserve As Level Art Moderator by OCR exam board. I have also been a Visiting Lecturer in Painting and Creative Studies Lecturer for Eastbourne College of Arts and Technology. Recently I have been teaching art, meditation and digital photography in the community.

Tutoring Approach:

I aim to encourage students to experiment with different ways of expressing themselves creatively and to find their own, personal interests and individual style. Consequently, there is no 'house style', and I find students are constantly stretching me to think of better ways to teach, which keeps me on my toes!

My own art work has encompassed both traditional and experimental approaches. Interests in psychology, the spiritual and art as therapy have led me to make more experimental, abstract paintings - landscapes of the mind. This experience of working in and having Art Therapy, has inspired both my own creative work and extended the way I approach teaching.

I prefer to teach art classes in groups no larger than 10, in which a welcoming, friendly atmosphere can develop during the course and students get get more individualised art tuition. Structured art activities are balanced with encouragement to do your own thing, and art teaching methods include demonstrations, talks, discussions, step by step or experimental exercises, projects, homework, encouraging one-to-one guidance and outings, always with the option to do you own thing.

I also offer one-to-one art, digital photography and photoshop tuition at times to suit you, daytimes, evenings and weekends. You can have a session as little or as often as you want, and learn at your own pace.

About Sophie:
I am an 18 year old girl, who recently finished her A level examinations at Southend High School for Girls. I am currently on a gap year and during this time would like to tutor young people in those areas which I am most proficient in- Art, Photography, Media Studies, History and English (as well as the 11+ which I passed myself). Art and Photography tutoring especially I am able to provide at a high standard, and I will be going to University to study the former in September 2009. In terms of experience for Art, I have sold 2 paintings, been paid to paint a mural inside a caf earlier this year, earn money by creating and selling jewellery, and have been commissioned to create a poster for an esteemed driving school in my local area. I was also recently awarded my schools annual 'Art Cup'. I am extremely interested in History and English and am well read in both. On a personal level, I am very friendly, empathic and patient, all of which make for good teaching skills.

Teaching Experience:

Due to my age I do not have any qualifications in teaching, but I do have a plethora of younger cousins so I am used to spending time with younger people and enjoy teaching and helping them with things. I come from a family of teachers and this has definitely rubbed off on me, I both an enjoy and have been told I am good at teaching, especially art. In terms of actual experience, I recently had to commandeer a group of around 25 people my age in an art-based capacity, which was very rewarding and produced excellent results. Also, my A level in sociology has led me to increase my understanding of, and improve my interaction skills with young people aged 11-15.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe with enough enthusiasm and good teaching anyone is capable of, well, anything, and as a tutor I would aim to provide both these things. I do not believe in a harsh approach to teaching as in my experience it only lowers spirits and hinders productivity and creativity. I would aim not only to help potential students increase their skills and understanding, but also their enjoyment of the subject, which I think is essential to success. Because I genuinely do enjoy the subjects I am offering to tutor, I would aim to share that enjoyment and thereby increase enthusiasm, and ergo skill.

About Gillian:
I am a recent graduate from The University of Glasgow where I completed a Master of Literature in Film and Television Studies. I also hold a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) degree in Meida: Theory and Production where I specialised in Journalism and Cinema. I have had work experience on a newspaper and have had several articles published in society newsletters and publications, including The International Crosby Circle and The Sinatra music Society.

Teaching Experience:

I am currently teaching Journalism and English Language on-line and have had experience working with primary children and children with special needs. I also hope to follow my Masters degree with a PhD which will include doing some lecturing to university students.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe that learning should be fun and in a relaxed atmosphere but at the same time academic and useful. My approach to teaching is to have the tutor and student both feel that they are getting a lot out of the experience and that the time is being well used. I will break down subjects into easily managable blocks and make sure that my student understands the unit before moving on. I also like to vary my tutorials by having some in the form of lectures, some in the form of question and answers, some where I will give students feedback on homework they have done and suggestions to improve what they have done, etc.
