Types of Tutoring: Travels to you
| About Helen: I have just left university and am currently on a gap year. As you will see below, I have lots of experience with children and intend to make my career in children's publishing. I particularly enjoy working with children at the far ends of the educational spectrum- gifted children and those with behavioural issues. I am very literary- minded and have a broad knowledge of the children's book market- as well as academic tutor, I am always delighted to act as a passionate and dedicated reading mentor to young people. |
Teaching Experience: I currently work as a Core Subjects tutor for an after- school education centre. I work with children aged five and upwards to help them reach their full academic potential. Previously to this, I have co- run both music workshops for primary school children (Keyboard skills and singing) and a drama club. I thus know how to inject a sense of fun into the proceedings, in order to help children develop an enthusiasm for learning. |
Tutoring Approach: I try and treat each child as an individual. I appreciate that some may need lots of technical help whilst others will need their imagination stimulated in order to generate an interest in the work- whatever the case, I cater for it. |

| About Michael: I am a postgraduate at the University of Bristol; I have a varied educational background in Music, Sociology, Theology, Classical Civilisation, and particularly (my main subject) Philosophy. Within philosophy my areas are quite expansive; ethics, metaphysics, aesthetics, history of philosophy, philosophy of science, epistemology and the interplay between them. I have an undergraduate degree in Sociology and Philosophy (2:i) and am reading towards my MA, moving on to PhD. |
Teaching Experience: I have run discussion groups and run talks and seminars of my work, and encouraged discussions in groups; I have also been a teaching assistant at a primary school. |
Tutoring Approach: I like to help people realise their potential, and help people to help themselves. What is important is to make the material seem approachable, and never to say something is hard; that already makes it difficult from the word go. There is a difference between having lots of steps and procedure, to being hard. Nothing is really hard, its just not seen how it can be overcome. |

| About Susan: 23 year old female, living in Manchester city centre. I am originally from Liverpool and came to Manchester to study English Literature and Language at University, gaining a 2.1. honours degree. I decided to stay in Manchester as I find it an amazing city and have some great friends here. I currently work as an insurance underwriter and have been for the past two years. I thoroughly enjoy my job and I am very dedicated and ambitious, currently studying and participating in exams with the aim of achieving a diploma in insurance. In my spare time I enjoy going the gym, playing badminton, painting artwork, going the pub (etc) and I'm also a keen cook. I am able to work in the pupil's home and I am also willing to travel to pupils houses as long as is near to City Centre (and accessible by tram, bus, train etc as do not drive) I have always had a desire to teach, but was never interested in doing it full time, therefore becoming a personal tutor would be a perfect opportunity for me to do something worthwhile which i will enjoy. |
Teaching Experience: I have not had any previous teaching experience |
Tutoring Approach: I am young, approachable and believe the best learning will be in an environment where enjoyment is factored in. I will ensure this is the case. I am extremely patient, friendly and a clear communicator and I value these attributes as being significant benefits required when offering personal tutoring. I may not have the experience of other tutors but I feel i certainly have the enthusiasm and helpful, dedicated attitude that will ensure i am alert to the pupil's needs. |

| About Emma: I am a confident, outgoing and friendly graduate with a passion for music and learning. I attending Oxford University and have always enjoyed both sharing and my own and learning new skills. I love film and literature as well as socialising and meeting new people. I am a caring person and am always keen to help people. |
Teaching Experience: My teaching experience has been within the field of music. I have taught private bassoon and singing lessons and also taught beginner theory. |
Tutoring Approach: I like to use a heuristic style of teaching so that the student does not feel they are being dictated to. I believe for the student to feel as though they have reached the conclusion themselves without being told is more rewarding. I also enjoy an interactive lesson, especially if leaning music, so that different topics are taught in different ways so as to keep the students attention and engagement with the subject. Overall i want to make learning fun and not something that they are going to dread. |

Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / From their home
| About Amy: I am a recent graduate with a 2.1 in English Literature from Cambridge University. I have always had a passion for reading and writing and this has translated into an enthusiasm for arts subjects at A-Level and Degree Level. My love of music inspired me to study trumpet, piano and singing from a young age and I am currently pursuing my singing professionally. I am also very interested in Classical history and languages and believe in the importance of learning modern languages, as a means of increasing personal freedom and cultural awareness. I am an out-going person with a good sense of humour, an interest in world-affairs and a weakness for jazz. |
Teaching Experience: I have tutored many pupils of varying ages and abilities. I currently tutor pupils ranging from six-year-olds embarking on verbal and non-verbal reasoning, 13 year olds preparing for common entrance, AS students struggling with exam preparation right through to degree level English students. I greatly enjoy teaching such a wide variety of people, encouraging all of them to approach their subjects with confidence and enthusiasm. It is important to provide all of the students with structure and consistency, whilst keeping the lessons active and interesting. For example, I have recently tutored a primary age girl in literacy skills. This involved using phonetics and interactive methods, such as songs and games, to encourage her to be enthusiastic about reading and writing. Structure and regularity in our lessons improved her confidence quickly and her ability increased dramatically with the use of a well-organised and fun phonetics course. Towards the end of my teaching her, she got into a new school, where she was provided with excellent phonetics tuition to continue her studies. Similarly, with one of my 13+ pupils, frequent assessment of his progress using test papers and consistent encouragement of his creativity with projects and presentations gave him a varied, but nevertheless structured, approach which helped him to go into the exams feeling deservedly assured about his own ability. I come from a family of four siblings, two of whom now have young children. I am used to babysitting and caring for three children under 6 at a time and therefore have good experience of interacting with primary age pupils. I am widely experienced in working with young people of many ages and am aware of the structure, personal attention and encouragement that teaching requires. |
Tutoring Approach: I am keen to pass on the enthusiasm I have for this subject and my other main academic interests to tutees of all ages. I recognise the pressures involved in preparing for academic examinations at various levels and believe in the great benefits of one-to-one teaching in swiftly developing the tutee's understanding, confidence and individual ability. At the same time, I want to encourage the tutee to enjoy pursuing the subject for its own sake and to savour the opportunity to explore it in greater depth. Whether a tutee is looking to sharpen up his/her knowledge for an exam or just to take pleasure in what the subject has to offer, I am happy to help. In terms of my approach to the tutorials themselves, I will work initially to assess the student's specific academic needs and then aim to provide a personalised structure of sessions which will hope to cover areas of anxiety or particular interest. |

| About Emily: My name is Emily and I am 19 years old. I studied at Newstead Wood School for Girls, Orpington, where I gained all A / A* grades at GCSE and studied French, Music and Religious Studies at A Level, for which I received the grades A, A, B respectively, including 96% for French. Alongside this, I have grade 8 violin, grade 7 piano and grade 5 music theory, all with distinction. During my school years, I was a member of the Bromley Youth Chamber and Symphony Orchestras, both of which I led. Because of my age, I am aware of what is currently being taught in schools, and what is expected of students in French and music in particular. I have a passion for teaching and am fun, friendly and cheerful. I understand the difficulties faced by students in large classes, who do not always receive the attention they need, and I feel it is important to address this issue. I have chosen to tutor French and music because these are my areas of expertise and the subjects about which I am most passionate. I have just finished a year studying Music and French at Sheffield University, for which I received a 2.1 mark. However, I have decided to pursue music performance and am now taking a gap year in order to apply to Music College. As I do not drive, I prefer to tutor from home. However, I am happy to travel a reasonable walking distance to the tutee's home if required and am also willing to tutor online if preferred. I understand that choosing a tutor is a difficult decision to make, therefore I would be happy to meet with people so they are able to make an informed decision. |
Teaching Experience: During the academic year 2005-06 I mentored academically gifted Year 2 students in English and maths at Tubbenden Infant School, Orpington. I taught the children individually and was teaching skills beyond those being taught in the classroom and setting and marking assignments. I am also hoping to become a teaching assistant this year at St Olave's Preparatory School, Mottingham, and am in the process of undergoing a CRB check. |
Tutoring Approach: My skills would be best applied in helping tutees improve in aspects of work with which they are struggling as well as challenging more able students to learn more advanced skills and deepen their knowledge of the subject. I will also proof read any work or coursework as well as helping the tutee to improve it if necessary and I will help tutees develop revision techniques if appropriate. My approach would aim to maximise the tutee's understanding of their topic or subject with minimum stress. |

View Gail's Profile

Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / From their home
| About Gail: I have a degree in Classical Studies which mainly consisted of studying ancient literature. I completed 4 out of 6 modules of a PGCE in Secondary English before I realised that my partly disabled son still needed a great deal of guidance. I spent about 7 years home-educating my son who suffers from an ASD, ADHD and dyslexia. I was able to improve his reading and writing skills so that he managed to achieve a Grade D in English when he was 15. I have spent numerous years working as a volunteer assistant within primary schools where I gained a certificate in learning support. I also have a great interest in music and could possibly incorporate this into any tutoring I do. I am currently studying the piano which I have a real passion for and wish to continue at while being able to earn some money doing something worthwhile. |
Teaching Experience: I spent about 9 years as a volunteer classroom assistant in local primary schools when my children were young. During this time I gained a qualification in learning support where I spent time working closely with a dyslexic child in a year 2 class and managed to improve his reading level considerably. I undertook a PGCE in Secondary English. This was a modular course and I completed, and passed, 4 out of the 6 modules. Two of the modules I passed were school placements, one of 4 weeks and one of 7. During these placements I taught a variety of students and year groups ranging from Year 7 to Year 13. I have really spent the last 7 or so years home-educating my son who is severely dyslexic and made use of firstly "Alpha to Omega" book to help him improve his reading skills and then we discovered the book "Toe by Toe" which helped him enormously. |
Tutoring Approach: I am a quiet and patient person and will always listen to others allowing them to have some input. I feel that it is important to be aware of how a child's mood can change on a daily basis and not pressurise them into doing something they may find too challenging one day, but not another. I have learnt this from close contact with my son who is partly autistic. I feel that it is always important, especially with younger children, to show them that learning can be fun. This can often mean that they don't actually realise that they are learning anything if it is taught in a more upbeat and fun way. |

| About Clare: I'm energetic, driven, fun and hard working. I like to always try my best and expect this from my pupils too. I think learning of any level should be stimulating and fun for everyone involved. I did a degree in English and American Literature at Manchester University and then went to work in the film industry in costume production. 2 years later I realised that teaching was my future and I haven't looked back since. I've just got married and moved to the area and am looking to start up some tutoring work and carry on teaching. |
Teaching Experience: 3 Years teaching mixed age range class in a primary school in North Devon. 1 year teaching a year 2 class in British council school of Madrid. Ran a life-drawing class in London for young adults. Helped run After-school Art class in North Yorkshire. |
Tutoring Approach: I am very adaptable in my teaching. I think it is best to fit your teaching around the pupil rather than the other way round because people all learn and respond in such different ways. I expect my pupils to work hard and I like to challenge them to stretch themselves. I believe that you need to enjoy yourself whilst working in order to learn in a more effective way so I also try to bring this into my teaching where appropriate. |

| About Emily: I am a Postgraduate violin student at the Royal Northern College of Music where I also completed my undergraduate with a 1st class honours degree. |
Teaching Experience: I recieved Pedagodgy tuition throughout my degree. I teach violin at Our Lady's school in Oldham and privately. I'm also the violin tutor for Rochdale Youth Orchestra. |
Tutoring Approach: Music is a subject that can be taught in a very academic and dry way. I hope in my teaching to get back to the instictive and emotional basis of music; learning to understand what's on the page and historical context alongside learning the skill of listening and responding which makes music such an important part of our lives. |

| About Robert: After graduating with an engineering degree, I spent some time in indusstry, then took a teaching qualification (PGCE) to teach in further education. After some time my hobby took over and I moved from being a free-lance french horn player to joining the BBC Welsh Symphony Orchestra in Cardiff, where I remained for 12 years. Most recently I have been working as a compliance officer for a mortgage brokerage. |
Teaching Experience: I have experience teaching mechanical engineering in further education, and mathematics and physics at secondary level up to A level. I have also taught the french horn and other brass instruments, principally trumpet and trombone, both on individual and class bases. |
Tutoring Approach: In my experience, the need for tutoring is usually caused by a lack of confidence in the pupil, which stems from difficulties in problem solving because of fundamental misunderstanding(s) at some stage in learning. I have found that a sympathetic approach to investigating and correcting the weaknesses and the provision of plenty of practice in past papers is the best approach to resolving pupils' problems and restoring confidence |

| About Kodo: I am a freelancing pianist/musician, working mainly as a performer and a piano/theory teacher. I have a Bachelor and Masters Degree in Music with Distinction, and I have been awarded several prizes and awards as a performer at both national and international level. |
Teaching Experience: I have worked as a peripatetic theory and piano tutor in schools, and I also teach pupils privately on a regular basis. |
Tutoring Approach: My main approach is to make the lessons as enjoyable and interesting as possible, because this is really what drives them forward to want them to know more. In the case of teaching piano for example, I always try to find the pupils' taste in music so that I can cater for their tastes and bring materials that they would enjoy playing. |
