| About Peter: I am a 24 old German, living in Birmingham for since October 2008. In 2004 I graduated from "Grosse Stadtschule Rostock", Germany achieving an average grade of 2,1 in my Abitur (A-Level equivalent). My majors were English and German. After my civilian service I studied "Popular Music and Media Management" at the University of Paderborn, Germany, which I will complete this term with a Bachelor of Arts degree. Furthermore I had piano lessons for 10 years and am playing the bass guitar for 6 years. I am also a autodidact in rhythm guitar and able to teach the basic concepts. |
Teaching Experience: Since studying at an internationally accredited university enables you to get to know people from around the world, I came in contact with a lot of students whose mother tongue was not German. |
Tutoring Approach: Learning a foreign language and about a different culture can be a lot of fun. Although some rules, especially grammar, have to be learned by heart. I can offer you German classes with a lot of real life examples, such as music, films, literature, TV shows and magazines. It is possible to learn about German politics and the German party systems through a vivid conversation which does not only enables you to understand German politics and history, but also upgrades your conversational skills. Having played in several bands enables me to teach a real-live approach to music and the instrument. |

Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / From their home
| About Daniel: I am a trainee primary school teacher in university specialising in music. Myself being a trainee reflects on my cost per hour compared to other tutors. I would be happiest teaching music skills, however I would happy to do literacy, maths, science, music or I.T. at primary school level. Musically I have a BTEC national diploma in music technology before starting my degree, I can play guitar, bass, drums and keyboards. I can currently accommodate guitar, bass and keyboards at basic levels and guitars at a slightly more advanced level. I would be happy to help out with GCSE music and have the music technology available to help pupils with their composition side of GCSE coursework allowing to record their compositions on their instruments, sing on their composition and have other instruments involved just by having keyboard and computer skills. On a personal experience level I have been in bands since my days in school which has involved me releasing two digital singles with different labels, playing a major European music festival and touring other places around England and Wales. |
Teaching Experience: I am going in to the second year of my degree. I have undertaken placements in primary school which has involved me teaching units of maths, literacy and lessons of music. This year I will be taking another placement in a primary school along with doing some music based tutoring in groups. |
Tutoring Approach: I will teach children what they want to learn. Whether it is what they are currently doing at school or whether they are learning an instrument as a hobby. I will offer the children free recording of some of their lessons so they have something to show for their time spent learning and they can hear their progress and show off at home! |

Types of Tutoring: Travels to you
| About Ellie: I am a student reading law at the University of Birmingham. I have an excellent academic record from one of the top grammar schools in the country (Sutton Girls). I have A-levels in English (B) and History (A) and GCSEs in Maths (A*) and Music (A). I also take singing lessons privately and can play a number of instruments to a sufficient standard to assist in general primary level music teaching. |
Teaching Experience: I have 2 years experience of being a general assistant in a private maths and english tutor group. I have no other official teaching experience but I have worked with children in a number of capacities including leadership roles and I am highly competent in the above subjects at the levels offered. |
Tutoring Approach: For primary level children, I can offer supplementary tutoring to complement formal education in maths and am willing to extend this to assistance in preparation for KS2 SATs. In music, I offer teaching of the reading of music in the context of various instruments; this will include a rudimentary understanding of key and time signatures. Reading music is an underrated skill that may come in useful in unexpected situations. It would, of course, also greatly assist the learning process of any child considering learning a musical instrument. For GCSE-level, I offer syllabus-specific tutoring in preparation for GCSEs. Preferred exam boards are AQA for English and OCR for History but I will consider alternatives if requested. Please note that where tutoring is for exams, I may charge an extra fee for any materials needed such as practise exam papers. I acknowledge that I do not have much in the way of qualifications, however I have worked with children in many capacities including tutoring and while I am young, my age has generally been an advantage in terms of relating to young people. All the subjects I am offering are those which I have great interest in and have studied very recently. My fees are low to compensate for my lack of professional experience, but this is not a reflection on the quality of the services I offer. |

| About Catherine: Music Student in Scotland , will be furthering Music Performance studies in England as of September 07 Young, motivated, enthusiastic, reliable and honest Offer vocal tuition to potential vocalists from primary age to around 14 years old. Also cater for adults looking to start out casual singing lessons as a hobby. |
Teaching Experience: Previously employed by my vocal teacher as a Drama Assistant for children age 5 - 12 As i am still studying myself, tutoring has only just been seen as a possible extra source of work. As i have completely an NC in Music, i hold basic theory knowledge and through my own vocal lecturer hold valuable knowledge of the voice which i am extremely keen to pass on to others. |
Tutoring Approach: I would begin by discussing with the student what they hope to achieve through the tutoring and take things from there. Can help out with basic music theory where needed. Vocaly - light physical warm ups. - short vocal exercises at beginning of every lesson - explore different genres of music to find where the student really thrives and gains most enjoyment out of singing - after time , notice obvious progression within the student - both myself and the student should be willing to research and find more repetoire to learn regularly Most of all, hope the student enjoys the lesson and finds it rewarding. My approach will be enthusiastic, helpful and hope to see success within classes. |

View Monica's Profile

Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / From their home
| About Monica: I'm a 22 year old graduate, living in Stevenage. I graduated from Lancaster University in 2007 with a 2.1 BA(Hons) in English Literature, although I got high firsts in some modules, my areas of expertise proving to be women writers (from past to present) and my self-chosen dissertation module of a cognitive poetic analysis of children's picture books. This dissertation module, combined with my later experience at early years teacher training (PGCE) has given me a thorough background of the many ways picture books can be used to supplement teaching, a skill particularly appropriate for the younger tutees! I am also capable of assisting study in higher education also, having fairly recently gone through the newly introduced assessment structure of GCSEs followed by a separate AS level and A level. I have A levels in English Language and Literature (A), Geography (A) and Maths (B) as well as 12 GCSE grades all A* or A (OK, I confess to a B in chemistry! teehee!) in English, Maths, Physics, Biology (I did the three sciences separately as a triple award instead of the standard double award), Statistics, French, Religious Education, Food Technology, Geography, History, Music. I also have experience of working with Special Needs having been a play assistant and then Deputy Play Leader at a respite play-scheme for disabled children over most holidays between 2002 to 2007. I worked with a variety of conditions, for example, autism, Down's Syndrome, fragile X syndrome and unspecified behavioural difficulties. |
Teaching Experience: I began a PGCE in September 2007, but have decided to defer the second two terms for a year, to recuperate from the stress of finishing my degree! I have therefore completed a third of the Early Years PGCE, and gained much valuable information and experience both from the PGCE itself and from the experience it was necessary to have to be considered for the course. This experience includes 2 weeks of observing and helping in year 4 and 5 classrooms, 8 months of helping one morning a week in a local pre-school, and 2 weeks of assisting in an Early Years unit (i.e. Nursery and Reception) at an OFSTED awarded excellence, school. In addition to this I completed 5 weeks of placement in schools on the PGCE itself, and attended the more theoretical college based teaching as well. I also taught English as a Foreign Language in Thailand for a month, to all primary school classes. One of the main lessons I learnt from this was how to create interesting lessons with very limited resources! |
Tutoring Approach: I would begin the tutoring with a session of getting to know the tutee. Not only is the tutor-tutee relationship vital to producing an environment conducive to learning, but I believe it is really important to discover a tutee's ideal learning style, whether they be visual, kinaesthetic, auditory or a combination. This allows both of us to determine ways of studying that will be most enjoyable for the tutee and allow them to take in more information. I also think that prior to beginning studying any particular subject, there are some very useful tools for studying that can be learnt to apply to any area of the curriculum. These include learning how to make memorable mnemonics and how to use them effectively, how to mind map, how to use colour, diagrams and other devices to help with memory functions. Finally, I think one of the most beneficial aspects of personal tutoring is that it is tailored to the individual. In a group situation, a concept may be explained in a way which teh majority of the class could understand but leaving a third or so in the dark, so to speak. Often, all that is needed is to present the idea in a different way for the idea to click! For example, in GCSE maths, I spent several lessons utterly bewildered by a strange circle split into quarters which was meant to help remember the values of sin and cos at certain degree angles. After explaining my difficulty to my father (I'm lucky enough to have two teachers for parents!) he solved the matter in seconds, presenting the information on a graph, and going into how one gets to those values in the first place. This was because he knew (from his many hours dedicated to teaching me maths!) that I always needed to know how to get to a certain equation or theory that was being used, before I could understand how it could be used. Individual tutoring, perhaps most importantly, allows the tutee to go at their own pace. Rather than trying to keep up with a class who are racing ahead, or waste time going over a concept already thoroughly understood, precious time can be tailored to be spent on exactly what areas the tutee needs to work on, meaning an hour of personal tutoring can often produce results equivalent to a day spent in a classroom! |

| About Katherine: I graduated from Downing College, Cambridge University with a 2:1 in English in 2006. I then joined Ogilvy & Mather, the advertising agency, as a graduate trainee and have intermediate qualifications in brand management. Having decided to pursue a career in art law, I will be studying in London for the next two years. During the next academic year I will be studying for the Graduate Diploma in Law at BPP Law School in Waterloo. I will be able to tutor in the evenings, weekends and one weekday per week (this is to be confirmed pending receipt of my lecture timetable). My degree covered all aspects of the study of English Literature, and I also took a paper in French literature for two years. My degree touched on areas of history, philosophy and linguistics. I specialised in Shakespeare and literary theory. I am a cellist and would happily teach music theory, or indeed, practical cello lessons. I would also teach history, philosophy, and other arts subjects. |
Teaching Experience: In my gap year I had two novice cellists who I taught for six months, which I found to be a really fulfilling experience. Whilst at school I also ran the Junior Orchestra, teaching them the basics of practical musicianship both at a group and sometimes personal level. After my A Levels I also taught horse riding as part of my work as a Camp Counsellor at an American Summer camp. |
Tutoring Approach: I think my passion for my subject would come through as a tutor and I hope would inspire similar feelings in my students. My most memorable teachers are those who were most enthusiastic, and I'd relish the opportunity to pass on some of my interest in the arts subjects, particularly literature. My time at Cambridge helped me to come at intellectual problems from alternative angles, and I think I would be able to persuade those needing extra help to look at what is difficult in a different light and be able to sustain their interest in the subject. From working in teams at Ogilvy to manage creative campaigns I have also found that patience, being a good listener and persistence are the best way to manage clients and work through problems. I also think these qualities would be advantageous when faced with a frustrated student. |

| About Michael: I am a postgraduate at the University of Bristol; I have a varied educational background in Music, Sociology, Theology, Classical Civilisation, and particularly (my main subject) Philosophy. Within philosophy my areas are quite expansive; ethics, metaphysics, aesthetics, history of philosophy, philosophy of science, epistemology and the interplay between them. I have an undergraduate degree in Sociology and Philosophy (2:i) and am reading towards my MA, moving on to PhD. |
Teaching Experience: I have run discussion groups and run talks and seminars of my work, and encouraged discussions in groups; I have also been a teaching assistant at a primary school. |
Tutoring Approach: I like to help people realise their potential, and help people to help themselves. What is important is to make the material seem approachable, and never to say something is hard; that already makes it difficult from the word go. There is a difference between having lots of steps and procedure, to being hard. Nothing is really hard, its just not seen how it can be overcome. |

| About Peter: I'm a university postgraduate composer and performer and have returned to Ipswich having completed a BA and MA at the University of Leeds. I tutor violin (beginner - grade 5) and guitar (beginner +) performance as well as music theory and composition (any level). I have a wide range of musical experience and understand the technical requirements of most orchestral instruments having specialised in contemporary (avant-garde) composition. Aside from my academic qualifications I am a grade 8 violinist and completed my grade 5 theory (with distinction). I also play Guitar, Bass and Sitar and dabble in music recording and production and am a songwriter in my free time. Thus I can offer insight into most major musical branches. |
Teaching Experience: Throughout my undergraduate and postgraduate courses I taught students privately focusing on music theory, violin and guitar tuition. I currently run a guitar club at an Ipswich High School teaching entry level guitar to students aged 12-16. Prior to my degree courses I taught guitar and violin privately on a smaller scale to gather teaching experience teaching students aged between 10 - 52. I have also supported younger students on University Music courses in composition techniques and theory and can additionally provide contemporary aesthetic grounding and reasoning behind composition styles. My CRB check was initialised by this institution. |
Tutoring Approach: Every student has their own requirements and personal goals. I aim to help them achieve those goals utilizing the wide array of musical experience I have assimilated over the last thirteen years as a musician, student and composer. I emphasise the importance of performance technique, the right attitude for private practice and can teach music theory at any level ranging from basics to post graduate techniques including the obligatory grade 5 theory every associated board performer eventually faces! |

| About Paul: I am 42 and have worked full-time as a piano teacher and performer for 20 years . My background is in classical music - I have played for many choirs & musical groups. But my other love is jazz and show songs, and have played in hotels and restaurants. People find me very easy-going, funny and enthusiastic. Music is my great passion and I try to help everyone I meet and teach to find that passion in themselves. |
Teaching Experience: I have been teaching Piano on a one-to-one basis for 20 years. I have taught children as young as 3 to adults over 70. I particularly enjoy teaching children and beginners. |
Tutoring Approach: My style is probably best described as spontaneous and adaptable. I don't believe in fixed 'methods'. Everyone learns differently and also wants to play different music and achieve different musical goals. I always start by spending some time listening to my students musical desires. then I advise on how to get there in as fun and fulfilling a way as possible. I am happy to help students pass exams, but realise exams are not the best way for everyone. With children I always try to get their parents involved playing with them. And particularly emphasise the fun aspect of it. It can work like magic - I have taught 100s of children who probably wouldn't have responded to the old 'stick' based teaching methods, but who HAVE responded so well to the 'carrot' method they have quickly found the inner enthusiasm to spend hours playing every week. |

| About Laura: Violin, flute and piano teaching offered. I teach individual pupils or group classes. I studied classical violin and piano at the Birmingham Conservatoire and have the BA Joint Honours English and Music Degree from the University of Birmingham. Traditional folk fiddle classes are also available either in workshops or on a one-to-one basis. I undertook Solo Violin Performance in my Final Year at university (equivalent to Diploma Level) and I have Grade 8 in both piano and flute. I perform regularly with several different groups included world-folk group Little Sister and folk band Mad Jocks and Englishmen. |
Teaching Experience: I have been teaching for over a year to adult-beginner students and have experience leading fiddle workshops at summer festivals such as Priddy Folk Festival. |
Tutoring Approach: I have a professional outlook on a students development and I believe that working through grades such as the Associated Board, although not suitable to some students, are a preferable way to give a student something to work towards. I also strongly believe in the development of listening skills and improvising to become a better all-round and creative musician. |

| About Christy: Christy Thrower is an experienced, versatile and charismatic teacher and performer. In 1999 she graduated with a BMus from the University of Auckland, and in 2000 gained a PGradDipTchg(Music) from Auckland College of Education. She has taught the flute and other instruments for thirteen years in a variety of settings, to students aged 2 - 82, and also sings professionally. In 2001, she was awarded the Dorothy Wiseman Cup for Most Promising Vocal Performance in the South Auckland Performing Arts Competitions, as well as 1st, 2nd and 3rd places. In 2003 and 2004 she was co-producer of "Variety Show with a Difference", which included some of her students playing their own compositions, and was partially funded by Creative New Zealand. She has been living in London since May 2007. |
Teaching Experience: Christy ran a successful private music-teaching business for over ten years in Auckland, New Zealand; and has also been employed to teach group and/or individual classes by: Adam's Performing Arts Academy; Glenfield Music Education Centre; the Ministry of Education (at several schools), and Kirk Bernand and Brown Music - where she was band director at three schools, as well as instrument tutor. In 2001 she was employed at Hibiscus Coast Intermediate School as class music teacher and choir and band director. Her private students consistently do well in Associated Board and Trinity/Guildhall examinations. |
Tutoring Approach: As well as offering flute, singing, theory, recorder, keyboard and beginner piano lessons, Christy can tutor you in any of the following areas: - additional help (eg. outside of school-time instrumental lessons) for practical OR theory examinations, with Trinity/Guildhall or Royal Schools of Music - additional help with any aspect of GCSE, A-level or similar music courses, including coaching on successful performing techniques for assessed performances - beginner lessons also available in most brass and woodwind instruments - offering you an excellent start in all aspects; breathing, embouchure, tone, posture, music reading and musicianship. The success of her teaching business in Auckland was largely due to word of mouth, as clients were impressed with her encouraging, yet firm and motivating manner, and her effective communication with children and adults alike. She is especially experienced in helping students with breathing, tone, embouchure and postural issues, and difficulties with fluency in music reading. Lessons can be at your home depending on location. Group and individual lessons available. |

| About Robert: I am a professional bass player and have been playing for over 10 years. I have played in many different bands and also sessioned for many different choirs and groups, which has taken me all over the UK as well as internationally. I am currently music director for a large South London church. |
Teaching Experience: I have 2 years experience teaching drumming and electric bass to students of varying abilities and ages ranging from primary to adult. My qualifications include GCSE Music and HND in Music Technology. |
Tutoring Approach: I have a fairly relaxed teaching style where I focus on the musical development and overall musicianship of my students. Areas covered include techniques, rudiments and performance. I like to expose students to a wide range of genres which I find helps to increase their music appreciation but also extends their musical vocabulary. **please note for drumming lessons this can only take place at students homes - students own drum kit is essential** |

| About Sam: After specialising in jazz piano at Leeds College of Music until this Summer, I now wish to pass on the knowledge I acquired to as many others as I can. I have played piano from the age of 6, jazz, blues & rock from the age of 10 and now exceed grade 8 level with a strong knowledge of advanced music theory. I am also able to hold my own on guitar & bass which has proven useful to previous pupils who were guitarists wishing to stretch out their fingers out to the keyboard. |
Teaching Experience: I have brought ultimate beginners up to an intermediate level and taken intermediate musicians up to a higher level of musical ability and confidence. I have also taught music theory up to and beyond grade 5. I have taught a wide range of pupils from the age of 5 to 45 about the requirements to play classical, pop and jazz music, including improvisation. |
Tutoring Approach: Every day is full of music for me, whether it be in my head, through speakers or headphones, from my fingers or from my voice. I feel that I have much to share musically, not only through piano or theory lessons, but through philosophies and approaches. Music exists to be shared and I am prepared to offload all that I know onto someone else without pause or prejudice. |
