| About Donna: I am a final year PhD student with lots of teaching experience. I particularly enjoy teaching students on a one-on-one basis, although I am also happy to teach in small groups. |
Teaching Experience: I have in-depth teaching experience as an Associate Lecturer at the Open University. I have taught people of all ages and from different backgrounds (age, culture/language, educational background), as well as working with young people at schools and colleges. I am also a Specialist Skills Tutor, helping young people to progress academically via the building of skills. I pay particular attention to English and grammar, writing and study skills, exam revision, confidence building and public speaking. I have a Teaching English as a Foreign Language qualification, and am therefore happy to teach people aiming to improve their English skills. |
Tutoring Approach: I believe the best approach to tuition is round table discussion and working through study tasks (a variety of written, spoken and interactive tasks, taking into account the needs and skills of the student). Thus, after identifying areas to be worked on, the student and I will work through appropriate exercises in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere, therefore facilitating academic progression while building confidence. |

Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / Online
| About Tracy: I am a 40 year old ethusiastic and experienced English and Media Studies tutor, who has a good track record in motivating pupils and helping them to cahieve their potential. I have ten years experience in an FE college and 5 years experience as a personal tutor - teaching all ages from 11 - 65! I tailor sessions not only to the syllabus but to the interests and needs of the pupil. |
Teaching Experience: 10 years as a tutor in Liverpool Community College, teaching English (up to 'A' Level), Media Studies (up to GCSE), Study Skills, Creative Writing, Literature Studies and Confidence Builing. 5 years as a personal tutor - working with pupils from 11-18 years old on an intensive one-to-one basis. Some time spent teaching English in a fee-paying/private secondary school in Liverpool |
Tutoring Approach: I am knowledgeable, highly motivated, enthusiastic and relentlessly cheerful. I find that a positive 'can-do' attitude usually rubs off on the pupil. I aim to demystify and make accessible literature - especially for de-motivated and unsure/unconfident pupils. I particularly focus on pupils needs and strengths - which I use as a starting point in sessions. I have had very positive feedback from both parents/carers and pupils themselves - and helped pupils move up beyond expected grades. I also genuinely like secondary school age children and teenagers. (I have two children of my own). |

| About kevin: I have over seven years experience tutoring privately. I particularly enjoy seeing a pupil master an area that had been previously inaccessible to that pupil and sharing the joy that is felt. Most of my teaching experience has been gathered working with SEN pupils and I am well aware of the need to be consistent, patient, creative and supportive when tutoring - all qualities that I possess in abundance. |
Teaching Experience: 2004-Present: Head of English/History, Mill Hill County High School, Oak Hill Campus (Specialist EBD school), East Barnet London 2004 Jan-2004 Jul: teacher of English/SEN, Lea Valley High School, Enfield London. Specialist Sports College and mixed secondary school catering to over 1000 pupils, 45% of whom are statemented as having SEN. Sep 2003-Jan 2004: Teacher of Geography/SEN, Wandle Valley EBD school, Carshalton Surrey 1999-2003: Teacher of History/English/Citizenship, Charlie Smith High School, Kingston Jamaica |
Tutoring Approach: I prefer not to be overly intrusive. I will guide and support pupils as much as possible and give them as much resources as they need. However, i do believe in encouraging pupils to learn at their own pace and within the constraints of their respective learning styles. I believe in empowering my tutees to 'discover' and to solve problems with my help as opposed to being totally reliant on me for the answers. |

Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / Online
| About Amy-Jane: I have just finished my first year at the University of Reading studying a BA (ED) with English specialism, however, having found that my true passion lies within English, particularly English language, I have decided to transfer onto an English language degree course. I am passionate about helping children discover their true potential, as well as passionate about helping children with areas within their schooling which they may struggle with. |
Teaching Experience: During my first year at university I have completed a four-week teaching placement block at a local primary school in Reading, Berkshire. I acted as a classroom assistant for a large percent of the time, helping the children (year one) with their class work. I also listened to the children read and I also took whole-class and group lessons. During my first year at university I also helped run a poetry workshop, where I worked with a small group of children (year 5) to help them devise ways in which they could present a poem, not only altering the way they spoke but also how they acted certain parts of the poem out with other members of their group. In June/ July 2006 I worked in a local primary school in Norfolk for three weeks where I worked as a classroom assistant in a year six class. My main responsibilities were to help the children with their work, as well as helping with displays and laying out materials which were needed in specific lessons. In July 2005 I volunteered in a local children's holiday club in Dereham, Norfolk. My main role was to support the group leader, as well as to help the children with specific activities. |
Tutoring Approach: I am applying to become a tutor as I am passionate about helping children achieve to the best of their ability. I feel that my passion, not only for the subjects which I would like to specialise in, but for the children, is a big asset as it would enable me to put my all into helping the children, making the job thoroughly enjoyable and inspiring. |

Tutoring Approach: My tutoring style is relaxed and informal. I'm particularly used to coaching to boost exam performance (GCSE, A Level) and assisting with homework and classwork difficulties. However, as an Oxbridge graduate (and postgraduate) I'm also happy to tutor those that would like to be challenged beyond their school syllabus - for personal enjoyment as well as to help with university entrance! |

| About Alexandria: I graduated last year with a 1:1 from Cardiff University in Journalism, Film and Broadcasting and have since then taken a CELTA course and taught as an ESL teacher at a summer school. I have a high grasp of English and Media, with specialities in textual analysis in film and English literature, and my degree has also nurtured a natural interest in and analysis of the English language. |
Teaching Experience: I have undertaken university, A2, AS and GCSE level exams in recent years and so am familiar with what is required to pass an exam. During my CELTA I taught adults, but I also have experience of mentoring GCSE students and teaching foreign students aged between 11-17. |
Tutoring Approach: I prefer to elicit responses from tutees rather than just present information, I strive to make lesson content not only relevant but enjoyable. This is primarily in presenting material using a range of different skills (e.g. auditory, kinesthetic, visual, etc) to give variation as well as identifying the needs of each individual student and between us setting achievable goals to aim for during our sessions. |

| About Ritu: I am a fun and creative tutor. I like my students to learn in an innovative way which will help them to remember the subject matter. As well as the subject itself, it is also very important to engage the students, so that they have your attention and trust what you are teaching them. Many tutors may forget the importance of this aspect of teaching; it helps to build and strengthen the relationship between the student and the tutor. |
Teaching Experience: I have held tutoring sessions whilst reading for my undergraduate degree (first year only) at a Saturday School classroom. Then continued to tutor whilst studying for my Masters. In addition, my full-time job focuses on the best practice in helping people to learn and develop. These methods can be applied to any subject and any age range. |
Tutoring Approach: I like to firstly establish the current level of the student, before discovering what goal(s) he/she would like to attain after the tutoring sessions have taken place. I believe in making learning as fun and creative as possible, it is important to learn in an energetic way which inevitably will make the tutee remember more about the subject. |

Types of Tutoring: Travels to you
| About Glenn: A dynamic and young teacher, with a breadth of experience, I am passionate about the development and growth of young minds from all different backgrounds. My commitment towards a new challenge is unquestionable, as I believe self belief and determination are the keys to success. These are qualities that I always aim to bring out in my students and strongly feel that the best way to lead is by example. |
Teaching Experience: Having taught in a number of schools, predominantly in the Hertfordshire area, my teaching experience has been with students from 11 - 18 years old. Within this age range, I have taught (and still am teaching) from the A* level to learners who are lower in ability, some with special educational needs. This has enhanced my skills in terms of differentiation. I currently teach English at key stage 3 and 4 (11 - 16) but have had experience teaching English language and literature at AS and A level. In terms of Media, Communication Studies and Sociology, my expertise ranges from GCSE to A level. |
Tutoring Approach: My approach towards tutoring is one that is tailored to the tutee/s needs and draws on their preferred learning style. I am adaptable in terms of working on a one to one basis or in small groups. I am a firm believer in the benefits of assessment, both formative and summative, as this will ensure that progress is being made. Independent study is also vital to the success of a student, something that I encourage and a skill that I aim to develop with all tutee/s. |

Teaching Experience: I had previous experience teaching English at tuition centres in Forest Gate, Manor Park and Ilford: ages 7-18. A portion of my time has also been lend to my cousin during her GCSE period a year ago (the outcome: grade A* in Literature, grade A in language) and my younger brother during his SATs (achieved level 6 in English). |
Tutoring Approach: I am ambitious, hardworking, conscientious and a courteous individual, always ready to meet new challenges with zest and enthusiasm. View Jo's Profile
Availability: Weekends / Weekdays
Types of Tutoring: Travels to you
| About Jo: I'm a recent graduate from the University of Chichester with a 2:1 in English with Creative Writing (BA Hons). I'm flexible with my availability both during the week and at weekends, and I'm willing to travel reasonable distances within the Portsmouth area, i.e. Chichester, Fareham etc. I'd prefer to tutor students in their own homes. |
Teaching Experience: I am Trinity TESOL certified and have experience teaching English as a language to both children and adults. I also have experience tutoring children of secondary school age and knowledge of GCSE marking criteria. If your child is struggling at school or college, even one or two hours a week can make a huge difference to them; and if there is a particular piece of coursework they are having trouble with, even a one-off session can help them greatly, and I would be happy to help them not only with English Language and Literature but also with any English related subject (including, for example, Drama or Media), and to assist with the proof-reading and improvement of any coursework essays or reports. I'm also available for exam revision at any level. If you have Primary or Junior school-aged children, I can help them strengthen their numeracy and literacy skills, as a surprising number of children do find themselves struggling when they make the step up to senior school. |
Tutoring Approach: My strength as a teacher has always been in one-on-one work or tutoring small groups, particularly with pupils who may be struggling due to circumstances beyond their control. I strongly believe that all students are capable of improving their work with a little extra help and attention that it simply isn't possible for classroom teachers to give. One or two marks can really make a difference in grades (particularly at GCSE level, for example, where correct punctuation and grammar can be worth up to six marks) and as stated above, even a one-off session concentrating on a particular piece of coursework can make a huge difference to some students. I am extremely patient and very aware that all children learn differently, and willing to work with the student to find out the best way for me to help them, rather than expect to tutor everyone in the same way. |
