One of my main aims in tutoring is to stimulate an interest in learning, by making the topic as relevant in contemporary terms as possible. Most of the subjects I tutor, from Politics to Religious Studies have current and on-going social repercussions. I have found that making an other wise dry topic of relevance to a student awakens an interest and desire to learn more. It is those Eureka moments when students become aware of the linkages between what they have read, and what is going on around them that makes tutoring particularly rewarding. I am new to tutoring, having previously worked as a lawyer and then retrained as a theatre director. Tutoring Approach:
I firstly ensure my students understand the basics, and wherever possible try to develop their interest in the subject by taking them beyond the syllabus. I believe it is important to understand how concepts tie in with each other, and to see the 'bigger picture', which is invaluable for students taking their subjects onto a higher level. At the same time, it is of course important to understand the importance of achieving high marks in the final exams. So, to this end, I focus heavily on past papers of the relevant exam board, and scrutinise sample mark schemes with the students, so that they can see how the examiners will award them marks.

I have held both large and small learning conferences on sexual health issues as part of charity work at university. Also, I have taught a series of classroom lessons on similar topics. My last tutee, after just 3 hours of tutoring, saw her coursework grade raise by 2 grades and her overall exam grade raise by 1 grade.

My approach is to develop the tutee's confidence in their own ideas through open discourse and debate. As we progress we will look at essay writing skills and how to convey arguments correctly and persuasively. My philosophy and attitude to teaching and tutoring is dependant wholly upon the objectives of the tutees viz-a-viz preparation for examinations, coursework or dissertation on the one hand or alternatively a general schematic study so as to acquaint oneself with the suject area.

This ethos is coupled with the underlying vision to prepare the prospective students so as to lay the foundation for mastering the given discipline and equally to enjoy and revel in the subject areas as opposed to a mere fleeting study where a cursory consideration is afforded.

About Valerie:
I am currently a third year law student at Aberdeen University. This is my third year of tutoring, and I have loved every minute of it! I have a real passion for languages, and I speak French fluently, having spent a year in Paris from 2005 to 2006. I am a bit of a self-confessed bookworm, and when I'm not reading cases and statutes, I can generally be found with a good piece of fiction in my hand. I am also involved with debating and amateur dramatics in my free time.

I have been tutoring for three years now, and have built up experience catering for all levels from Standard Grade and Intermediate II to Advanced Higher in a range of subjects.
