About Philip Charles:
I am 26 and at present I am a Director at the Adam Smith Institute, an influential Westminster think-tank. Last year, I finished an MSc in International Relations from the London School of Economics and Political Science, and previous to this I studied History at University College London.

I am hard working and determined to excel, skills that I will pass on to whoever I tutor. I know what it takes to succeed and will work beyond what is expected to enthuse this confidence in to those that I teach.

Teaching Experience:

While at LSE, I tutored another fellow student from Japan who had only a limited grasp of the English Language. I took this extremely seriously and he managed to pass the MSc from being in a position in which his professors were certain he would fail. Outside of academics I have spent a number of years teaching tennis to children and adults of varying skills and abilities.

Tutoring Approach:

My approach to teaching is based on two fundamental premises. The first is that it is absolutely essential to find satisfaction in the learning process. This may not come through the actual material that needs to be learnt and it is up to the tutor to inspire in the student the confidence to succeed. As your tutor, I will lay down the learning structure that will cement this through detailed lesson plans.

The second premise is that supervised practise testing is imperative. This needs to be followed by a thorough evaluation of the results, in order to understand where improvements need to be made, in both knowledge and approach. As your tutor I will be available outside of teaching time to answer questions by email and phone, there will be no extra cost for this service.

About Orietta:
I began the study of Latin and Ancient Greek (language and literature) when I was 13 years old in Italy. In Rome I took my degree in Classical Archaeology and I completed my education at the University of Messina with a PhD mainly focused on Roman history.
I plan to live permanently in the wonderful capital of Scotland and I hope to be useful to its people by my work in Classics.

Teaching Experience:

During the summer I taught Latin (at intermediate level) in the University of Edinburgh, where I had a beautiful and stimulating experience with both young and adult students. I shall give tutorials in Latin, Ancient History (Greek and Roman) and Classical Archaeology in the School of History, Classics and Archaeology of the University of Edinburgh during the academic year 2008/2009. I have an extensive experience of teaching in my country at virtually every level. I taught Latin and Ancient Greek (beginning, intermediate, advanced level) for many years in high schools (Classical Lyceum) at the beginning of my academic career in Italy. Subsequently, I taught Classics in several universities, at both undergraduate and graduate levels. My teaching is very flexible, especially in responding to the needs of both young students and adults. I can teach Italian, Latin and Ancient Greek (language and literature) at all levels.

Tutoring Approach:

It is not possible to use the same tutoring/teaching method with any student. I think it has to be differentiated specifically. The main target of this work is to help a child to develope his/her thinking, his/her critic approach to the life. Classics are very helpful in this aim.

About Bethany:
I am a Cambridge undergraduate, going into my second year in October, studying Classics (Ancient Greek and Latin). I am a 19 year old woman, living in the Hertfordshire area. I have a very high level of skill in the Latin language. I am available for tutoring this summer vacation from early July until late September.

Teaching Experience:

I have tutored younger pupils at my Grammar school in Latin, and also have much experience in teaching young children (age 5-13) in Drama.

Tutoring Approach:

I feel I would be a very relatable tutor, because of my age and yet I am mature. I completed my A-Levels in 2006, and so the curriculum is very familiar to me. I have received world class teaching at Cambridge, and feel I would be very able to pass this on to pupils from primary school to A-Level.

About Emma Jane:
I studied Classical Studies at Reading University, mainly focusing on Latin Literature. I also studied German at university. I mainly teach Latin and English as a Foreign Language, but am also willing to teach German, and English Literature. I can also offer tuition in photography, both film and digital, and can teach theory and darkroom work. I like teaching both children and adults (and teenagers!),

Teaching Experience:

I have taught English as foreign language freelance to people from many different countries and language levels, and currently also work at a language. I have also tutored various children for exams, and provided one-to-one support to dyslexic students.

Tutoring Approach:

i am trained in the Communicative Method of teaching languages. This means that the the lessons are centred around what the student needs to learn, and are based on boosting the student's confidence in the language and encouraging them to use the language as much as possible, without becoming scared of making mistakes. I aim to make my lessons both fun and effective, and to make the students feel like they are making real progress.

About Annabel:
I am 26 years old and at the moment I am completing research for an MA in Classics. I live and work in Durham and am a self-employed English language teacher and proofreader. I am currently learning Turkish and German, and enjoy learning about other countries and cultures.

Teaching Experience:

I have been working as an English language teacher for 3 years, and have taught all age ranges from 6 years to adult, in groups and one-to-one lessons. I have worked in a private language school in Greece and a business-based school in Istanbul, and feel ready to take on any kind of language-related teaching! I have also taught groups of teenagers at various summer schools in the UK and understand the need for kinesthetic and game-based learning.
I have taught French to school-age children in informal situations, through the use of songs and the media, focusing on fluency of conversation, rather than grammar.
During my degree in Classics I have helped a number of students beginning and continuing with Greek (and Latin) with the complexities of the languages, and this has enabled me to have an excellent knowledge of both languages, which my teaching experience in other areas help me to explain to students.

Tutoring Approach:

Evidently, the tutee's needs come first! Aside from this, though, through my years of experience teaching English as a foreign language, it has been proved to me that students learn best when in a challenging yet fun environment. Going over and over the same piece of grammar which is difficult to understand will never solve anything. Thus in all my lessons, whether they be English Literature or Greek, I will do my very best to suit the lesson to the student, whether this be showing them how Homeric grammar can be interesting, or analysing D.H. Lawrence's 'Women in Love'.

About Eleanor:
I am a Cambridge Classics graduate, and I am currently studying for a post-graduate professional law qualification. I am available for tutoring during the week and on weekends, and can either host tutees at my flat, come to the tutee's house, or meet somewhere mutually convenient. I can tutor lots of different subjects, and can take on more than one tutee in each class if required.

Teaching Experience:

I have been tutoring professionally for over a year, and have had a high success rate with my tutees all achieving As and A*s in recent exam results.

Tutoring Approach:

As tutors go I am relatively young (22), so I try to connect with my tutees on a more personal level and develop in them some enthusiasm for their studies. I try to motivate my tutees to take pride in their successes and to recognise how to learn from any set-backs.

About Evie:
I'm in my last year at Westminster School, studing Latin, Classical Greek, History, Maths and Italian. I'm particularly keen to tutor in Classical subjects as I have been offered a place to study Classics at Clare College, Cambridge in 2009 and Classics is my speciality!

I'm friendly and patient and feel that I'll be able to interact well with my tutees, especially if they're young as I went through the same experience not so long ago myself and would be able to empathise with their situation and have the maturity to help them to handle it.

Teaching Experience:

I don't have any teaching qualifications and have not tried tutoring before although I have always helped less able or younger students with their work.

Tutoring Approach:

Rigorous, thorough, committed.

About Laura:
I am an Spanish girl, aged 21, and I'm going to stay for a month in Glasgow. I will be there all July. I am studying at university a degree of English, so my level is not bad. My Spanish is native and I love Latin and Greek histories and languages, so I would enjoy helping you! I am now studying German and I know the basics of this language. Moreover, I studied in a religious school, so I know many things about religions. And, needless to say, I could also help you if you are studying English as a foreign language.

Teaching Experience:

I have experience teaching because I have helped in a school in Ireland. There I taught Spanish to a group of 10 children. I have also tutored a girl who is 12 and I have helped her with her homework.

Tutoring Approach:

I think I can be a good tutor because I like the subjects I teach and I think it is very important because then you can transmit your enthusiasm to your tutees. I like doing things funny while you learn.

About Heather:
I am 35, and have been studying off and on for many years. I studied A levels in evening classes, which is a good way to learn efficient study skills. I recently completed my Masters' in English and will study for a doctorate when I have the funds.

I like to read and study informally in my spare time (although not all the time!) and I am interested in a wide range of subjects, especially modern popular culture. I am very fond of pop music, films and TV dramas.

Teaching Experience:

I have tutored my frineds in A level English and GCSE Maths, and have helped other students at university with their exam preparation. Recently, I have taken on a few GCSE and A-level English pupils.

Tutoring Approach:

I have a friendly and informal approach to tutoring. I work from the basis that the best way to learn is through love of the subject and all its quirks. I can explain the best way to work with internet searches and libraries, and how to find interest in the even most wretched set text. I can also advise on essay-writing, research and exam strategy.

About Chris:
Just before I turned sixteen, I had to leave Winchester College, where I was attending on a scholarship, due to illness. I'm now twenty and in the intermediary period have had little to no formal education, leaving me severely unqualified in comparison to many of the other tutors available. Not the most promising start to this effective sales pitch, I'll be the first to admit, but I believe that I can still offer useful tuition, due to an enthusiasm both for learning and teaching, a large degree of patience and an ability to deconstruct complex ideas into more simple ones, or so I've been told.

As I'm relatively new to all this, I suggest that, if you're interested in proceeding further, we arrange to meet for something of a (free) consultation, at which we can get an idea of, firstly, whether I might be able to help and, secondly, of whether we get along, which is also extremely important, in my view.

Teaching Experience:

So far I've only a few pupils. The first was a girl doing her common entrance exams. Our focus was on Latin, but we also touched on the Sciences. We met for about eighteen months, once a week for forty minutes to an hour. At the beginning of that time she was among the worst in her class at Latin; at the end she was by far the best. She achieved the grades she needed to and went to her first choice secondary school. I've also recently begun tutoring (through this site) two boys at opposite ends of Key Stage 3 (they're 11 and 14) in English and Maths, which is so far going very well.

A small sample size, granted, and I don't boast to have any exceptional teaching ability with just that experience, but I am convinced about the benefits of one-on-one tuition and seem to be competent enough to let that run its course without causing too much of a detrimental effect.

Tutoring Approach:

Our sessions should be enjoyable and educational - within those parameters I'm extremely flexible. For instance, while I'll usually come prepared with an outline of what to cover, I'd much rather we meandered and explore something interesting that comes up rather than forcing ourselves to stick to a rigid plan. Similarly, I have no problems going completely off curriculum and off subject at times, as for me tutoring is as much about building a thirst for knowledge and self-confidence as it is about teaching facts or techniques. Of course, passing exams is often the key priority, but I believe that not only is becoming enthused by learning an excellent end in and of itself, but also that, when it happens, everything else falls into place much more easily and naturally.

About Jenny:
I am an English lady who has lived and worked in many different countries. I have a love not just for languages but for learning about and experiencing different cultures and outlooks on life.
For a hobby, I work on ancient Greek and Latin manuscripts, with people in France, Spain, and world-wide.

Teaching Experience:

I have a wide range of teaching experience over 30 years, in primary and secondary schools, in universities and adult education. I have worked on a one to one basis, in small groups and with larger classes. I have particular experience of helping students with dyslexia or other learning difficulties.
Please note: Greek means 'ancient Greek' (classical or biblical).
I can also teach Catalan, to GCSE.

Tutoring Approach:

My chief aim in tutoring is to give the students confidence in their abilities and to help them recognize their own strengths and weaknesses as well as the way they learn best. I like to make the lessons enjoyable and stimulating, adjusting the level of challenge to suit the student. The lessons do not have to be for an exam, they can also be a leisure activity. My philosophy is that everyone can learn a language, and that it can be fun!
I work on a one to one basis and also with small groups if friends want to get together. Charges are reduced per student for group classes.

About Romina:
I am a 27 years old Italian girl. I am curios and ready to share my knowledge. I am getting a degree in Communications for "La Sapienza", the first University in Rome. At the moment I am doing research concerning Freeview Tv. I am an au pair and I really love looking after the kids. I am improving my English, attending an advanced course at the Southgate College.

Teaching Experience:

In Italy, as a student, I was used to help children boys and adults with homework and exams.I got a lot of experience because I have been teaching for 7 years. In London i teach Italian to the two kids I look after. I give Italian lessons to adults as well. Very very often successful!

Tutoring Approach:

I think that one to one lesson is the best way of learning. I understand that every person, every age, every character needs a differnt approach and attitude. I always try to understand what people want to say, verify and then give a response. I consider organization on of the main points in learning.

About Valerie:
I am currently a third year law student at Aberdeen University. This is my third year of tutoring, and I have loved every minute of it! I have a real passion for languages, and I speak French fluently, having spent a year in Paris from 2005 to 2006. I am a bit of a self-confessed bookworm, and when I'm not reading cases and statutes, I can generally be found with a good piece of fiction in my hand. I am also involved with debating and amateur dramatics in my free time.

Teaching Experience:

I have been tutoring for three years now, and have built up experience catering for all levels from Standard Grade and Intermediate II to Advanced Higher in a range of subjects. References are available on request. I am familiar with the key texts for Int. II and Higher English in a number of schools in the Aberdeen area.

Tutoring Approach:

I want to share my enthusiasm with my tutees, and encourage them to build up a passion for their subject. With regard to exams, I aim to give tutees an insight into the marking approach of examiners and also to provide the necessary basic structures on which a good examination paper is founded.
