About Harriet:
My name is Harriet and I am 20 years old. I am currently studying at Bristol University after finishing secondary school in London. I took a gap year and lived and worked in the USA and then travelled to South America. I received 3 As in my A Levels for History, French and Latin and I am now studying Classics and Spanish.

Teaching Experience:

I have worked as a tutor from the age of 18 tutoring children of between 12 and 18 years old in the subjects of French, History, Latin and Spanish. I also taught English in Argentina during my gap year for a company called Travellers Worldwide.

Tutoring Approach:

I would start with finding out the area or areas in which the tutee is having problems. From there I take a certain approach depending on the ability of the person. Usually I find it helpful to learn vocabulary for languages and would give them homework learning vocabulary (as much as I think they could handle). I also go over important grammar constructions and teach on how to write sentences and essays.

About Ralph:
I recently graduated from Bristol University with a 2.1 in Classics and have settled here permanently. I am an easy-going, amiable and approachable individual. In my spare time I play in a band and am very passionate about music, literature and film.

Teaching Experience:

I have little teaching experience although I come from a family of teachers so I guess it is in the blood. I have taught guitar a bit to good response and effect.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe that when it comes to teaching at school, a lot of the time the actual concept and basics of subjects are not given the required time. Once you have learned exactly how to solve a problem it becomes far easier to revise, rather than being taught simply what to do when faced by it. This skill is applicable to all subjects, especially maths and physics, and in my experience has helped enourmously when it comes to exams.

About Alberto:
I am a dedicated tutor who really enjoys teaching Spanish, Latin, Ancient Greek or Ancient History.
I get involved with the student and I think this is something positive as with both of us pushing in the same way the goals are much easier to reach.
I teach those topics on the condition of making them attractive to the students.

Teaching Experience:

I have a wide experience teaching Spanish in Spain (several academies in Granada) and in UK (Berlitz Academy, Manchester; LILA, Liverpool). I have taught Latin and Ancient Greek at all levels, from private tuition and high schools to Universitary (University of Granada, Spain; University of Liverpool, UK) level.

Tutoring Approach:

I have not only one approach when it comes to tutoring. Each student is different so each approach must be different. I combine discipline with rigor. I want my students to think that the money they are spending is worthy.

About Romina:
I am a 27 years old Italian girl. I am curios and ready to share my knowledge. I am getting a degree in Communications for "La Sapienza", the first University in Rome. At the moment I am doing research concerning Freeview Tv. I am an au pair and I really love looking after the kids. I am improving my English, attending an advanced course at the Southgate College.

Teaching Experience:

In Italy, as a student, I was used to help children boys and adults with homework and exams.I got a lot of experience because I have been teaching for 7 years. In London i teach Italian to the two kids I look after. I give Italian lessons to adults as well. Very very often successful!

Tutoring Approach:

I think that one to one lesson is the best way of learning. I understand that every person, every age, every character needs a differnt approach and attitude. I always try to understand what people want to say, verify and then give a response. I consider organization on of the main points in learning.

About Christine:
I am currently studying for a degree in Humanities with Classics with the Open University. I am passionate about Latin and Greek and Ancient History. I have also recently attended a course in New Testament Greek at the University of Cambridge's Institute of Continuing Learning.

I learned Latin and Greek at school up to O'Level but two years ago I decided that I could no longer do without any Classics in my life and began to study at degree level.

Teaching Experience:

Before leaving work to start a family one of my positions was as a Staff Training Officer with the Department of Employment where I trained adults in job related skills. I currently manage a counselling and advice centre in the voluntary sector where my counselling role involves working with young people.

I also have two teenage sons myself so I am experienced in supporting young people in home learning and exam revision.

Tutoring Approach:

My approach is student-centred focusing on what their needs are whilst at the same time having a clear goal in mind. Latin and Greek inevitably involve learning grammar but I like to get students to read adapted texts as soon as possible so that there is a real sense of achievement.

If students are already learning Latin and Greek in another context my aim is to make sure that I support that learning. I aim to ensure that they have a good understanding of what they are learning at school (or elsewhere) by consolidating grammar and providing lots of practice which builds confidence.

About Evie:
I'm in my last year at Westminster School, studing Latin, Classical Greek, History, Maths and Italian. I'm particularly keen to tutor in Classical subjects as I have been offered a place to study Classics at Clare College, Cambridge in 2009 and Classics is my speciality!

I'm friendly and patient and feel that I'll be able to interact well with my tutees, especially if they're young as I went through the same experience not so long ago myself and would be able to empathise with their situation and have the maturity to help them to handle it.

Teaching Experience:

I don't have any teaching qualifications and have not tried tutoring before although I have always helped less able or younger students with their work.

Tutoring Approach:

Rigorous, thorough, committed.

Teaching Experience:

I have given Latin lessons for about three or four years and I have also done some lessons in Mathematics and French. I also have experience with teaching children, because I was an Au pair and did a practical training in a nursery school.

About Emma:
Hi, I'm Emma! I'm 24 and a native of Boston, Massachusetts, though I've lived in Cambridge for a few years now. I hold degrees from Cambridge University (English) and Harvard University (Classics and Anthropology) and will start my Ph.D at Cambridge in the fall. (It's in Renaissance literature, and most of my research is on Shakespeare's theatre company and Elizabethan performance conventions). From September-December 2007 I was in Tokyo, studying Japanese and teaching English language and literature courses to students at Nihon University. Now I'm back in Cambridge, working various jobs (teaching and otherwise), and am very keen to meet more students and get more teaching experience!

In my free time, I see a lot of theatre (or as much as I can afford...) and a lot of ballet, write dance reviews for an online journal, and read cookbooks compulsively. I'm also an ex-competitive swimmer and water polo player and try to get to the pool as much as possible. I've also become increasingly curious about open-water swimming...

Teaching Experience:

While at Harvard I worked as a trained undergraduate tutor at the Writing Centre, helping students in all courses to gain confidence and independence in their college writing. While I was happy to help with specific assignments and particular details, I tended to focus more on larger issues of personal style, argumentative and organisational strategies, and critical thinking. Beyond these more formal tutoring arrangements, I copy-edited and proofread several of my friends' senior theses (dissertations). I also tutored some local children in beginners' and intermediate Latin grammar. [I studied Latin in school from age 12-18 and took several university-level classes in Latin poetry and prose. While my formal education in Classics ended in my second year at university, I use Latin quite often in my studies in Renaissance lit, so my grammar skills have stayed up to scratch.]

More recently, I've taught ESL courses (elementary->intermediate level) for Select English in Cambridge, and freelanced as a proficiency-level English conversation tutor. While in Tokyo I led free-conversation courses for Japanese university students and assisted in teaching classes in English literature and art.

Tutoring Approach:

Well, I suppose that my basic approach to tutoring has something to do with taking students very seriously, and always treating them as the valuable, independent minds that they are.... so of course, my tutoring sessions tend to be very interactive & founded on personal interest and respect. I have observed that a great deal of tutoring -- certainly in writing and literature, probably in any subject that requires critical thinking of some sort -- is actually about boosting the student's confidence, and dissolving his/her inhibiting deference to phony obstacles and phantom authorities. It's about showing students that they actually have all the necessary resources and abilities to express themselves cogently, to clarify their thinking and defend their convictions, and to cope with all the truth they observe --> and that they should WANT to do this!

While I am happy to focus on particular assignments or questions, my goal is to make all my students more confident, efficient, and effective writers and thinkers. I also try to show students (by example if nothing else) that the subjects really can be FUN, and that studying the arts -- by translating a passage, critiquing a poem, writing a short essay, whatever -- is one of the fundamental ways that we learn about ourselves, as well as the world around us.

About Emma Jane:
I studied Classical Studies at Reading University, mainly focusing on Latin Literature. I also studied German at university. I mainly teach Latin and English as a Foreign Language, but am also willing to teach German, and English Literature. I can also offer tuition in photography, both film and digital, and can teach theory and darkroom work. I like teaching both children and adults (and teenagers!),

Teaching Experience:

I have taught English as foreign language freelance to people from many different countries and language levels, and currently also work at a language. I have also tutored various children for exams, and provided one-to-one support to dyslexic students.

Tutoring Approach:

i am trained in the Communicative Method of teaching languages. This means that the the lessons are centred around what the student needs to learn, and are based on boosting the student's confidence in the language and encouraging them to use the language as much as possible, without becoming scared of making mistakes. I aim to make my lessons both fun and effective, and to make the students feel like they are making real progress.

About Pilar:
Hello.

I am a student at Cambridge University. I was previously at a successful, all-girls, private school.

I have top grades in a wide range of GSCEs. I took Spanish, Latin, Ancient Greek and General Studies at A Level and passed with high A grades. I have a 2:1 in Classics Part I for Cambridge and am now taking Arabic and Middle Eastern Studies.

I am 20 years old. People describe me as friendly and sociable as well as organised and efficient. In my Cambridge college I hold various positions of responsibility.

Teaching Experience:

I have experience as a private tutor.

During July '08 I taught English as a foreign language at a school in Dubai, UAE. I had my own form class but during the school day I saw 60 children between the ages of 11 and 15.

I have also taught workshops to English Primary School children and Japanese High School and University Students.

Tutoring Approach:

I am friendly and supportive as a tutor; encouraging my pupils to stretch themselves and achieve their best.

Although I am only 20, I feel that I have the right amount of maturity to be guide my pupils, but I am also young enough to seem approachable. Tutoring is not the same as teaching in a classroom, so I do not believe that a Tutor should be the same as a teacher.

As I am still at university I will only be available between terms. My university holidays coincide with school holidays.
