| About Ghislaine: I am an English graduate (honours degree from Exeter University) with a passion for poetry and literature and a long and distinguished career in journalism. I have worked as a reporter on daily newspapers and as a features writer for monthly business and women's magazines including Management Today and Cosmopolitan, and am currently a communications consultant for major companies including Shell International. I am also a qualified Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) teacher. |
Teaching Experience: I am an experienced coach and TEFL teacher and have also been responsible for mentoring and developing individuals' writing careers within organisations. |
Tutoring Approach: My aim is to inspire my tutees with a passion for their subject - this is not about ticky boxes! I use each assignment not just to explore and learn about the specific topic under investigation, whether it's 'unravelling' the meaning within a poem or preparing an article for a magazine or newspaper, but to improve the tutee's skills in researching and learning for themselves. |

Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / From their home / Online
| About Laura: I am an easy-going person able to relate to all ages, and have extensive experience in one to one tutoring, classroom teaching, teaching to learners whose first language is not English, and teaching (creative writing and drama) to vulnerable groups. I have an MA in Arts in the Community which has qualified me to teach individuals or groups such as unemployed, homeless etc. I work part time as a creative writing tutor for an online diploma, and am a published journalist in publications including The Guardian. I have just published my first novel which is receiving excellent reviews. |
Teaching Experience: 2 years TEFL in Japan - classroom English teaching and 1:1 conversation skills teaching 6 months teaching English language and/or literature in France to university students 1 year working as a creative writing co-ordinator with homeless people; organised a theatre project Currently working as an online tutor for a creative writing diploma |
Tutoring Approach: I am an excellent tutor who is humorous and patient, and who never makes the student feel embarrassed for not understanding (my own experiences learning Japanese contributed to that!). I can always think of a different way to explain something. I can teach on a wide level - from tutoring in A level English to helping someone with their novel to helping someone to read. I have had excellent testimonials from my creative writing students, who have said I always go the extra mile to help. I am also an advocate of giving the student the skills and knowledge necessary so that he or she can eventually learn on their own. It may shrink my pool of available students, but it is my main aim and approach in my work. I think my main advantage, apart from my qualifications and experience, is my approach - I am laid back and not a difficult to approach academic, yet I will always strive to do the best for my students and am very highly qualified. I am particularly good at working with teenagers. |

| About Gemma: I work and relate well to children and adults with a wide range of abilities and needs. I am an enthusiastic person who believes that every student has a voice that should be listened to. I also work as a writer and encourage creativity in my students. I am outgoing, confident and professional. I returned to education later on in life and believe that it is never too late to learn new things or discover new talents within oneself. |
Teaching Experience: I have worked as a tutor in the subjects of English Literature, English Studies, Creative Writing and Drama for 2 years. I have a proven track record of improving students grades and I have experience of working with students up to degree level. |
Tutoring Approach: I try to make my classes as fun as possible. I encourage learning using tools such as simple mind maps and different revision techniques. I have found that not only do my students grades improve but so does their essay writing and analytical skills. I always arrive at a tutoring class on time and I come prepared with work. I follow set texts that a student is working on at school/college/university to ensure that the knowledge and skills they gain from my teaching methods can be used to improve grades at their institution. |

Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / From their home / Online
| About Thomas: I grew up in a bi-lingual household (German & English) in Luxembourg, where I went to the European School. Even though I was in the German section, I learned English from first year primary onwards and am equally comfortable at expressing myself in both of these languages, both orally and in the written form. Additionally, I learned French during secondary school in Luxembourg (I went on to achieve an A grade for my A-levels in Dorset, UK), I picked up Luxembourgish in everyday life up to fluent level, and I learned Spanish during a 2-month stay in Havanna, Cuba, in 2003. I also studied Business & Economics at A-level, am an enthusiastic drummer (I've played the drum kit and Congas in various bands and drum groups, performing in front of crowds of up to 500 people), am a keen sportsman (I played Rugby at Junior National level, Taekwondo at Uni, and enjoy cycling, running, tennis, etc. I am also a very keen photographer, an interest which I developed at university through learning various techniques of digital photography imaging and Web Design. I am also a keen film enthusiast, enjoy going to gigs of all sorts, like to run for charity, and take great interest in my local environment and community. |
Teaching Experience: I have taught a primary class in Ghana for a week (English and basic Maths), but other than that I have no formal teaching experience. I have, however, been involved in many translation and interpreting projects (at university and professionally) of which I would be glad to offer you a sample. I have received many years of high quality Primary, Secondary, and University education and am certainly able to teach what I have learned, as I still have all the teaching material. I am a very good communicator, enjoy explaining issues and discussions, and many of my friends have recommended me becoming a teacher. In fact, just before starting having accepted the MA International Journalism in Cardiff starting September 2008, I had also received an unconditional offer by Bristol University for MA Education MFL German & French. |
Tutoring Approach: First of all I will assess the individual skill level through a thorough conversation and analysis. Then I will ask the student where he sees his/her weaknesses/strengths. I will then commence teaching taking into account these areas, and when I realise that the student has any other weaknesses I will try to iron them out. I believe that teaching needs to strike a fine balance between discipline and fun, as enjoyment in learning the material is vital for motivation. I also support a continuous stream of feedback between tutor (me) and the tutee, as well as third parties (if the tutee agrees to this). I am willing to focus on any relevant subject, as long as I receive notice thereof at least a week in advance. If I don't receive any specific wishes, I will simply follow my teaching schedule. For classes over 30 minutes drive away, I expect a minimum of 90 minutes teaching. My schedule will fill up rapidly, so please get in touch as soon as you can. |

| About Hazel: I am a freelance journalist with a degree and MA in English language and computational linguistics. I work from home and contribute on a regular basis to the Guardian, Telegraph, Independent and many of the major music magazines. I am a qualified subeditor and used to edit Muso, a classical music magazine. |
Teaching Experience: I have taught at Leeds University on the linguistics degree course and also in the computing department in HTML programming. I have experience of teaching English as a foreign language at residential summer camps and I have undertaken degree modules in the application of teaching methods for EFL. |
Tutoring Approach: I have a holistic approach to tutoring, believing that it's sometimes better to start from the beginning and understand the problem as a whole before focusing on details. Often the problem can be much larger than spelling or grammar and it is therefore necessary to get back to basics first. I am informal and approachable with a sense of fun! |

| About Darren: I am PhD student at Cardiff University. My broad background subject is Media Studies, but my main area of interest is media, politics, and journalism (theory). I have strong reading, writing, and research skills so I can offer help in a variety of disciplines. |
Teaching Experience: I teach seminars to undergraduate degree students at Cardiff University, so I do already have experience of teaching (and marking) in my field of interest. The degree that I teach on is Journalism, Film and Media, which concentrates on a variety of media-based, political, and social topics. I have also been a student mentor at secondary education level so I have one to one experience of tutoring from this work as well. |
Tutoring Approach: My approach to tutoring is similar to that of my class-based seminars: I teach in a friendly, relaxed, encouraging and open atmosphere. I like students to engage by exploring their own ideas and questions as much as possible to ensure that they are fully involved in gaining an understanding of the subject concerned. I always take a constructive and positive approach to teaching to ensure that students feel comfortable and confident and can learn in a productive environment at all times. |

| About Sophie: I graduated from Cardiff University this year and I was awarded a Bachelor of Arts (Joint Hons) in Journalism, Film and Media and Sociology, Second Class Honours, Division One (2:1). I am considering returning to education in September 2009 to complete a PGCE and become a teacher, but until then I hope to gain some valuable experience in teaching. |
Teaching Experience: I am currently working as a teaching assistant at local family learning days in and around Swindon. I assist the teacher in teaching both cookery and arts and crafts to children and their parents. For example, I recently taught children and adults to make mosaic tiles with a safari theme in relation to Black History month. Moreover, I have volunteered to help out at Ruskin Junior school in Swindon on several occasions, helping 7 year old children with reading and simple maths. |
Tutoring Approach: I am an approachable and friendly individual with an encouraging approach to tutoring. I believe it is essential that I form a friendly bond with my pupil so he or she feels comfortable asking me questions that to others, the answers may be obvious. When tutoring smaller children, discipline is important to me because without respect, the pupil will be unlikely to take the lesson seriously. However, I do like to bring an element of fun to the lesson and try to be as creative as possible. With older pupils, I feel I am a tutor disguised as a friend, with the emphasis on a relaxed environment in which to learn. |

| About Cindy: I grew up in Singapore where I studied English as my first language and Chinese Mandarin as my mother tongue. From 2005 - 2007, I worked as a freelance translator for Asia Pacific Breweries, translating marketing promotional materials from English-Chinese for their brands such as Tiger Beer and Heineken. I have also done translations for the Singapore government. As demonstrated, I possess an excellent command of written and spoken English and Chinese. This year, I completed a two-year part-time Diploma programme in Translation Skills (Chinese and English) from the Singapore Chinese Chamber Institute of Business. Earlier in June, a team of Chinese teachers from Singapore, including myself, were invited by The Office of Chinese Language Council International or China Hanban, to attend a 2-week course at the Shanghai Fudan University on Chinese Language Teaching. Currently, I live in South Wales and am available to tutor children, youths or adult learners who are interested in learning Beginner's Chinese Mandarin. I am also able to teach English (for foreign speakers), Business-related subjects or Media and Journalism subjects. |
Teaching Experience: I graduated with a Master's degree with Distinction in International Journalism from Cardiff University and worked as a Life Skills Lecturer at Singapore's Institute of Technical Education from 2006 to 2008. At the College, I taught a variety of modules in English to students aged 16-22, which include Communication Skills, Personal Effectiveness and Career Planning & Development. In addition to teaching, I was also Editor of the college's newsletter, CE:360, in March 2007. I worked with the students to write and design the newsletter where 8,000 copies were printed every six-monthly for the students and staff of the College. Recognised for my commitment and reliability, I was chosen by Singapore's Ministry of Foreign Affairs to represent the college on a one-month foreign teaching assignment where I taught basic English to Lao government officials. Before becoming a teacher and translator, I graduated with a first degree in Advertising and Marketing Communications. I was employed as a senior public relations executive in a Singapore-based PR agency for two years, where I devised a number of PR and marketing programmes and organised many publicity events. |
Tutoring Approach: I am patient, encouraging and methodical in my approach to help learners gain confidence in the subject. Realistic learning goals coupled with a fun learning environment would ensure learners sustain their interest in the subject and eventually develop competence. Learning is individually tailored to fully cater to the learner's needs. |

| About Donna: I am a final year PhD student with lots of teaching experience. I particularly enjoy teaching students on a one-on-one basis, although I am also happy to teach in small groups. |
Teaching Experience: I have in-depth teaching experience as an Associate Lecturer at the Open University. I have taught people of all ages and from different backgrounds (age, culture/language, educational background), as well as working with young people at schools and colleges. I am also a Specialist Skills Tutor, helping young people to progress academically via the building of skills. I pay particular attention to English and grammar, writing and study skills, exam revision, confidence building and public speaking. I have a Teaching English as a Foreign Language qualification, and am therefore happy to teach people aiming to improve their English skills. |
Tutoring Approach: I believe the best approach to tuition is round table discussion and working through study tasks (a variety of written, spoken and interactive tasks, taking into account the needs and skills of the student). Thus, after identifying areas to be worked on, the student and I will work through appropriate exercises in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere, therefore facilitating academic progression while building confidence. |

Types of Tutoring: Travels to you
| About Glenn: A dynamic and young teacher, with a breadth of experience, I am passionate about the development and growth of young minds from all different backgrounds. My commitment towards a new challenge is unquestionable, as I believe self belief and determination are the keys to success. These are qualities that I always aim to bring out in my students and strongly feel that the best way to lead is by example. |
Teaching Experience: Having taught in a number of schools, predominantly in the Hertfordshire area, my teaching experience has been with students from 11 - 18 years old. Within this age range, I have taught (and still am teaching) from the A* level to learners who are lower in ability, some with special educational needs. This has enhanced my skills in terms of differentiation. I currently teach English at key stage 3 and 4 (11 - 16) but have had experience teaching English language and literature at AS and A level. In terms of Media, Communication Studies and Sociology, my expertise ranges from GCSE to A level. |
Tutoring Approach: My approach towards tutoring is one that is tailored to the tutee/s needs and draws on their preferred learning style. I am adaptable in terms of working on a one to one basis or in small groups. I am a firm believer in the benefits of assessment, both formative and summative, as this will ensure that progress is being made. Independent study is also vital to the success of a student, something that I encourage and a skill that I aim to develop with all tutee/s. |
