About Matthew:
Hi

My name is Matthew Knott and I am 31 years old. I am a British citizen and I have recently returned to the UK after living and working in Tokyo. I am married with a young son. I attended Chatham Grammar School for Boys and the University of Leeds. As well as my teaching jobs I have worked in sales, the legal industry and local government.

I have several interests, including writing articles and reading. I love traveling and I have visited several countries, especially in Asia. I take a keen interest in a number of sports and in particular love football. I also enjoy playing the guitar and writing music.

Teaching Experience:

I have a number of years experience as an EFL tutor. I have worked in summer schools in England and Spain. Until March of 2008 I was living in Tokyo, where I taught at a private language school and at Waseda University, one of the largest and most prestigious universities in Japan.

I have taught a huge number of nationalities and also have experience of teaching every age-group from toddlers upwards. Additionally, I have had a number of private students for whom I taught English, Business English, Academic Writing, Politics, Current Affairs and Japanese.

I have a first class degree in Politics & Sociology from Leeds University as well as A-Levels in Sociology and History at Grade A and am comfortable tutoring these subjects as well.

Tutoring Approach:

I pride myself on being a very flexible tutor. In terms of EFL it is extremely important for me to find out clearly what the student`s purpose for studying is, their interests, strengths and weaknesses. After that I will choose, adapt and create appropriate materials to help the student develop.

I am comfortable teaching all aspects of the English language, plus any special requirements students may have. I can also offer an essay editing service for international students.

For academic subjects I can help with vocabulary, analysis, essay-writing, research skills and examinations techniques. I am happy to assist with any requirements or problems students may have. I am very enthusiastic about these students and hope I can pass on encouragement and enthusiasm to students.

With regards to Japanese I can teach basic skills, grammar, vocabulary and phonetics. I am also happy to teach Hiragana, Katakana and Kanji characters along with useful techniques for remembering and reading these.

I hope my lessons will be creative, constructive and enjoyable. I look forward to hearing from you.

About Jennifer:
I'm an American Masters student who has been living abroad since 2003. I moved to Scotland in September 2006 to study Ethnology and Folklore of Scotland. I work at a Secondary School as an administrator until the end of the school year. Next year I will continue on to my PhD. I have a lot of experience teaching children, including Drama and Improv. I look forward to teaching Elementary Japanese to any age group.

Teaching Experience:

3 years of teaching English as a Foreign Language in Japan. I taught both children and adults, although adults were primarily at the Business level. I worked at Yamaha, Suzuki, Sony, and Honda to prepare employees for overseas transfers. On the third year I concentrated more on kindergarten and primary school English.

Tutoring Approach:

In the past I've been asked to design my own lesson plans, rather than be dependent on a book. If a student chooses a specific topic or grammar problem, I'm more than happy to follow through. If the student would prefer to use a textbook rather than a conversational based lesson, I am happy to design the course with the student. Group conversation classes are welcome!

About Mhorag:
I learned to speak, read and write Japanese in Japan and sat my level 1 Japanese Proficiency test there. I graduated from the University of Salford in 2005 with an MSc in IT (Distinction) and am currently working in the IT industry and seeking an outlet for my IT skills there.

Teaching Experience:

I have experience of teaching language to classes and individuals. My first experience goes back to 1997 and I later spent two years teaching in a private language school part time.

My more recent teaching experience has been on a one to one basis.

I have taught both traditional grammar based language and functional conversational language according to student and curriculum needs.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe in conducting lessons as far as possible in the target language and I ensure that all the supporting material exists to make that possible.

Language should be functional, relevant and useable in order to make the learning effective so I would encourage pursuit of any outlets for using your Japanese. I particularly enjoy Japanese film and meeting Japanese people in Manchester as a means of keeping skills fresh.

About Chirag:
I'm a friendly, approachable person, who is passionate about learning and aim to share this with each student I teach. I fundamentally value education and its importance to our society.

Teaching Experience:

I have 5 years' experience with TEFL, having taught both children and adults at all levels. Teaching mathematics at KS3 has given me a thorough understanding of the National Curriculum Framework. I am familiar with the subject knowledge and up-to-date teaching methods. Having dealt with pupils with low prior achievement in maths, I am aware of their difficulties and misconceptions and how best to deal with them.

Tutoring Approach:

I place great emphasis on establishing a solid relationship with the student. I feel it is important to get to know a student in order to establish his/her learning style and thus which methods work best in maximising the student's potential. I hope to assess students in ways other than by simply seeing if they can complete 10 similar questions successfully.

About Diana:
I am a medical student in my clinical years. I am very passionate about teaching, and my greatest joy is in seeing people making an improvement on subjects that they need more help in. I am patient and determined to work hard.

I have completed 4 GCSE A levels in singapore, and I have scored As for those. I love sciences and maths, and the only thing I love more than them is teaching them.

I have been taking Japanese course and have reached pre-advance level. Due to time constrain I have yet to take the Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT), but based on my estimation, I am ready to take JLPTII.

Teaching Experience:

My teaching experience lies on teaching my friends and family members.

Tutoring Approach:

I would want to go along with the pace that is comfortable for you, please give me feedback on whether the lesson is going too slowly/fast.

(I would always be available to answer any questions regarding the subjects, just drop me a mail)

For the sciences and math:
I would start with the topic of your choice, giving full explaination of what it involves and have a chat to clear out any questions you might have.

Then I would send some exercise questions which I would mark and return with feedback.

Following that, I would like to start a chat so that I can do an informal quiz to go through the subject; to find out what you now know and what else you need to know.

For Japanese language:
Every week I would start with a word document describing a grammar point, and I would describe fully on how to use it. I would give a range of vocabulary that can be used alongside the grammar to be memorized for the particular lesson. After a sufficient time ( decided by you) I would want to start a chat to answer any questions you have.

Following that, I would give some exercises to be completed, and I would mark it and mail it back with some feedback.

In addition to that, I will be available to chat in Japanese to practice what you have learn so far.

(I would be glad to give pointers on how to type Japanese in the computer)

About Xiran:
As an exchange student from China, I would really love to have some extra teaching experience here. I love people who are energetic and willing to learn, and have always hoping to work with them. I am very easy going and I do laugh a lot, but I am serious in teaching since I respect cultures as well as languages.
I was brought up with Chinese classics as well as western spirits. I believe in Chinese traditional virtues of patience and devotion. I enjoy working with people.
Essentially, learning a language is the ultimate incarnation of humans' desire to communicate and to explore. I will do my best to convey, not only words and sentences, but also meaning behind them.
Thank you!

Teaching Experience:

English tutor -- In the second year of my high school, I was hired to teach English to a group of pupils during the summer vacation.
(2004 TV university, Kelamayi, China)
Thank you!

Tutoring Approach:

Teaching methods will be different according to different levels of learners. I will also make further adjustment after starting the tutoring.
Example of approaches to teaching: People need stimulus to keep them from being distracted, so I might use methods like character quiz and word grouping to prop my teaching.
Thank you!

About Jennifer:
I have recently graduated in Japanese and English Linguistics from Newcastle University with a 2:1 hons. Encouraging people to make the most of languages really inspired me to pursue tutoring. I developed my interest in languages while learning German at school which also gave me my first opportunity to travel and experience other cultures. The beautiful intricacies of Japanese customs and the intriguing complexity of the language motivated me to study Japanese at university.

Modern Languages is an essential part of the curriculum: developing students' confidence and communication skills, and expanding their ability to communicate their opinions. I appreciate the disastrous effect removing languages from compulsory education will have and hope to inspire children into enjoying languages as much as I do. The demand for interpreters and other language related professionals means this is equipping students with something extremely useful for the rest of their lives.

Teaching Experience:

As I had always been interested in speech and language science, a profession closely linked with education, I undertook work experience in a school for children with speech and language difficulties. Assisting both the teaching and language support staff meant I could sample both vocations.

I believe the key to being a successful teacher lies in successfully communicating complex information. During the summer I taught Japanese privately in Leeds. My experience of language learning taught me how different teaching methods can have a completely different effect on students. Combining this knowledge with my private teaching experience confirmed for me that a more personal approach was always effective.

Tutoring Approach:

I use visual aids and other supplementary materials to try and engage the student. Themed lessons involving specific grammar points will also make learning more fun!

About Jodie:
I have just completed a BA(Hons) in Geography at Oxford University,

I am an outgoing, friendly person who is passionate about the subject of Geography and learning foreign languages. This manifests itself in a great enthusiasm for travel and learning about the world and new cultures.

Teaching Experience:

Between mentoring pupils in lower years at school, coaching tennis to various age groups up to 14 years old and helping friends with their studies I have built up teaching experience. Having very recently been through the education system I have first hand experience of which teaching styles work.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe one of the most important elements of academic success is confidence and aim to instil this as well as enthusiasm by using additional tools alongside text book resources. As a perfectionist I have always aimed for the best and so aim to bring out the best in students.

Teaching Experience:

I've been teaching 4students in UK for 2 years.

Tutoring Approach:

The instruction style is on oral proficiency. The basic aim is to increase the students' ability to understand Japanese. Therefore, from the first lesson, we encourage students to communicate and use their newly learned language skills in their everyday lives. We believe that being able to communicate successfully in real life situations is important when learning any language. Though we stress grammatical and pronunciation accuracy, oral communication and comprehension is our ultimate goal.

About Emma:
I am a calm, patient and understanding tutor with a sense of humour! I know first hand the difficulty of being under academic pressure and that, sometimes, students just need that extra bit of help. I am currently studying for BA Joint Honours in German and Japanese at Cardiff University. I also studied French and Spanish at a selective girls' school in Wolverhampton, and have obtained a year 1 certificate in British Sign Language. I have, as you may be able to tell, always been interested in languages, and feel that they come naturally to me.

Teaching Experience:

I was a peer mentor in sixth form, tutoring younger girls in their language studies, such as German and Japanese. I also tutored in a neighbouring school for pupils who were either having difficulty with their current French or German studies, or wished to learn some Japanese. More recently I also taught Japanese as part of a summer school scheme for Primary School leavers - they all responded well and I found it a fun and rewarding experience.

Tutoring Approach:

I have completed a course in Teaching English as a Foreign Language, or TEFL, and learnt to use various teaching methods and strategies. I feel it is important to incorporate fun in any lesson and to help improve the student's confidence in their studies - if they enjoy it, they are more likely to excel in what they do.

About Vanessa:
My name is Vanessa, and I am a first year student at Nottingham Trent University. I am taking business studies for my formal degree, but I also study Japanese language within the university. I have studied Japanese for a while now, and find it to be a very enjoyable and interesting language. I would be able to teach Beginner and Intermediate level Japanese to all ages.

I have also studied English Literature to A-Level, and would love to assist anyone who needs help either in English grammar lessons or literature from Primary up to A-level.

Teaching Experience:

I have tutored Japanese previously in Northern Ireland.

Tutoring Approach:

I have a real passion for languages which I would love to be able to share with others. I would ideally teach beginners Japanese, including language basics and vocabulary, grammar lessons, reading and writing Hiragana/katakana, as well as an introduction to Kanji.
I have quite a laid back approach to studying both English and Japanese, and usually meet at a cafe within the city. Everyone pick up languages and ideas at different paces, so I like to move at a pace that suits the student.

About Ian:
I have a degree in Urban Studies and Planning. I studied Geography, History and Politics at A Level, and I have a very keen interest in the built and natural environment, and the interaction between the two.
I have lived in Japan for 4 years and I am now living in England with my Japanese girlfriend. My understanding of Japanese is pretty good, and I have a recognised qualification for teaching languages.

Teaching Experience:

I have taught English for the past 4 years to foreign students. I have taught children as young as 2, and adults as old as 70. I saw all of my students progress during the time they were under my tuition.

Tutoring Approach:

It is important that lessons are enjoyable. Motivation is very important when studying and I try to keep all of my lessons varied and interesting. It is very important to me that students want to study. A lesson with a disinterested student or teacher can be very de-motivating. Praise and encouragement also are vital to my lessons.

About Joseph:
Approachable and friendly professionally trained actor, writer and English teacher. Graduated with a first (distinction) in Drama and Creative Writing from University in East Anglia and have travelled extensively in Europe and Asia, including four months in Japan. I'm from a family of teachers and have a keen interest in helping other people do better.

Teaching Experience:

As well as doing theatre outreach and workshops in Drama and Acting while at university, I have had work experience working as a classroom assistant in nurseries. After graduating, I trained as English as a Foreign Language teacher in Budapest (Cambridge accredited Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults). Since then, I have worked as an English teacher in Suffolk, Hungary and Japan, both privately and with schools (including the Working Holiday Association in Tokyo). I have taught all ages and abilites; and more nationalities than I can remember.

Tutoring Approach:

I consider myself to be a life-long student; I'm always seeking out more knowledge and experience. I believe that everyone has the capacity to learn almost anything and that there are no bad students; only bad teachers. The key to learning effectively is feeling relaxed and enthused, and these are the two elements that are often sorely missing in regular teaching. I favour one-to-one lessons because of the opportunity to cater personally for each students needs to help them progress in the way that suits them best. More formally, my methods lean towards the interactive and the communicative, with focus on the student being as active as possible in the lessons.

About Antonio:
I am a 24 years old spanish boy, living near the centre of Nottingham. I like learning languages and sharing with other people, specially the japanese and its culture.

Teaching Experience:

I have some experience teaching spanish to exchange students, mainly english and japanese speakers. I have studied japanese for 4 years, so I can converse and also teach it at a reasonable level.

Tutoring Approach:

I begin the lesson checking how much of the language does the student know, and then try to make them get a spanish pronunciation of every letter of the alphabet. I have some grammar books to use in the lessons. I can move to your home if is not too far away from city center for the class, which can be as long as you think necessary, usually 60 to 90 minutes. I can also use internet, but for the spoken parts would be better to meet in person, as I can help you to correct the english pronunciation and make it sound like spanish.
