About Sophie:
I am a University student currently in the final year of my degree, BSc (Comb Hons) Business Administration and Sociology.

I am a friendly, enthusiastic individual that have always connected well with the young people I have worked with.

I believe that tuition is a wonderful way for people to get the extra support they made need in certain topics. It builds confidence and gives someone the chance to get the thoroughly into a subject. With the ever increasing amount of exams in the Education system tuition can improve results and reduce exam stress.

Teaching Experience:

I have previously worked in a secondary school on a one to one basis with pupils there. While in this position I worked with pupils on behavioural and motivation issues. I tutored pupils on various subjects in particular English. This would everything from setting them tasks to build up essential skills (for example vocabulary or creative writing) to reviewing their homework and essay in more detail. I also set individual targets with them and provided information to help pupils plan their further education and/or future career.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe everyone can achieve the very best grades. It is simply a matter of find a way to relate to the topic.
Different people have different needs which is why tuition works so well. It allows work to be done at the ideal speed for the individual focusing on the areas that need work.

I also believe a positive attitude and some encouragement works wonders. Highlighting areas in a topic or skill where a person is doing admirably as well as pointing out areas that need work is essential in teaching.

About Ellie:
I am a student reading law at the University of Birmingham. I have an excellent academic record from one of the top grammar schools in the country (Sutton Girls). I have A-levels in English (B) and History (A) and GCSEs in Maths (A*) and Music (A). I also take singing lessons privately and can play a number of instruments to a sufficient standard to assist in general primary level music teaching.

Teaching Experience:

I have 2 years experience of being a general assistant in a private maths and english tutor group. I have no other official teaching experience but I have worked with children in a number of capacities including leadership roles and I am highly competent in the above subjects at the levels offered.

Tutoring Approach:

For primary level children, I can offer supplementary tutoring to complement formal education in maths and am willing to extend this to assistance in preparation for KS2 SATs. In music, I offer teaching of the reading of music in the context of various instruments; this will include a rudimentary understanding of key and time signatures. Reading music is an underrated skill that may come in useful in unexpected situations. It would, of course, also greatly assist the learning process of any child considering learning a musical instrument.

For GCSE-level, I offer syllabus-specific tutoring in preparation for GCSEs. Preferred exam boards are AQA for English and OCR for History but I will consider alternatives if requested.

Please note that where tutoring is for exams, I may charge an extra fee for any materials needed such as practise exam papers.

I acknowledge that I do not have much in the way of qualifications, however I have worked with children in many capacities including tutoring and while I am young, my age has generally been an advantage in terms of relating to young people. All the subjects I am offering are those which I have great interest in and have studied very recently. My fees are low to compensate for my lack of professional experience, but this is not a reflection on the quality of the services I offer.

About Remus:
I'm a professional tutor and philologist with a history of getting results fast through a self-designed language teaching programme that throws away such antiquated ideas as learning by rote and emphasises learning through interaction and activities.

Teaching Experience:

In my four years of teaching at all levels, I've had a 100% rate of success, with beginners getting to an advanced level in a matter of a few months. Previous tutees have gone on to pass exams, home and foreign universities, and to work abroad in a country of their chosen language.

Tutoring Approach:

An individual approach is the cornerstone of my approach to tutoring. I personally tailor my tutelage for each student, taking into account their strengths, weaknesses, interests and aspirations. I dislike the approach of teaching a few phrases by rote - my central aim as a tutor is to teach each tutee how to express themselves.

About Philip Charles:
I am 26 and at present I am a Director at the Adam Smith Institute, an influential Westminster think-tank. Last year, I finished an MSc in International Relations from the London School of Economics and Political Science, and previous to this I studied History at University College London.

I am hard working and determined to excel, skills that I will pass on to whoever I tutor. I know what it takes to succeed and will work beyond what is expected to enthuse this confidence in to those that I teach.

Teaching Experience:

While at LSE, I tutored another fellow student from Japan who had only a limited grasp of the English Language. I took this extremely seriously and he managed to pass the MSc from being in a position in which his professors were certain he would fail. Outside of academics I have spent a number of years teaching tennis to children and adults of varying skills and abilities.

Tutoring Approach:

My approach to teaching is based on two fundamental premises. The first is that it is absolutely essential to find satisfaction in the learning process. This may not come through the actual material that needs to be learnt and it is up to the tutor to inspire in the student the confidence to succeed. As your tutor, I will lay down the learning structure that will cement this through detailed lesson plans.

The second premise is that supervised practise testing is imperative. This needs to be followed by a thorough evaluation of the results, in order to understand where improvements need to be made, in both knowledge and approach. As your tutor I will be available outside of teaching time to answer questions by email and phone, there will be no extra cost for this service.

About Cairan:
My name is Cairan, and I am seventeen years old. I left school a year ago and I am currently studying Childcare and Education in college. I received 4 credit standard grades, including English(1) , Business Management (1) and history (2). I feel I would really enjoy helping other people with these subjects as I really enjoyed them in school and have a very good knowledge of these subjects at a standard grade level.
I am a cheery person who will try and explain parts which the child is not quite understanding in a simple form which I think would have even helped me in school. Also with me only been seventeen I feel that I should be able to work along side the child very well.

Teaching Experience:

I have no current teaching experience, however I am studying a college course to become a teacher and I feel that this sort of experience will help out a lot.

Tutoring Approach:

I shall cover points in which the client is struggling with. Starting out with the basics, working from school books, asking and checking over questions, cover exam revision, and also encourage them all the way through to their exams.

About Michelle:
I am a qualified Primary School teacher with fours years experience. I have recently become a Mummy and am therefore taking a career break from teaching. As I love my job I still want the opportunity to teach and have decided to take up tutoring on a part-time basis.
My hobbies include playing the piano, skiing, taking long walks and swimming although I don't have much time for that now I have a beautiful little boy!

Teaching Experience:

I have taught for four years and have had experience within the whole primary range. I was Head of Science at my last school and responsible for raising standards in Science for SAT's. I taught Year 6 for 2 years so have extensive SAT's experience in Maths, English and Science. I was then promoted to Head of ICT and Assessment at my current school, where I benefited from teaching all ages from 3 - 11. I also undertook a French course giving me a certificate to teach French at primary level. I also introduced an effective Assessment for Learning programme into school which helped to raise standards of teaching and learning.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe in a fun and interactive approach to learning and my lessons always have variety and aim to appeal to different learning styles. I do not believe in my pupils sitting for an hour simply working through lots of worksheets. I believe in a questioning and evaluating approach where children are given the opportunity to investigate, as I firmly believe this helps fuel enthusiasm for a subject and allows children to enjoy learning.

About Elizabeth:
I have just completed my degree at Durham University, where I have spent the last 4 years reading French, History and Sociology. My interests lie mainly in the Middle Ages and Early Modern periods of history, but I am also an avid Modern European historian, and having studied it throughout my whole academic career thus far I am up to date with current school curriculum etc.

Languages have always been a passion of mine. I spent much time in France during my youth, including a one year exchange to a boarding school in St. Omer. Whilst the final year of my degree has included little French I have highly proficient oral and aural French.

I am a friendly, honest, and caring individual, who enjoys many of the same hobbies as my peers, however I do boast good communication skills, and being the eldest of four children has taught me much about communicating what are sometimes difficult ideas and concepts to people who perhaps don't have as good a grasp on them as I do. I am approachable and warm, and also highly dedicated and focussed. I truly am passionate about what I know, and always striving to find better ways to pass this knowledge on.

Teaching Experience:

In October 2003 I attended and completed a TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) course in Bristol. Whilst this course did not involve any hands-on teaching, it taught several different interesting and varied methods of teaching and was illuminating in that it gave me a few new ideas about planning and efficiency. Due to university commitments I never followed this course up, however the insight it gave me was invaluable.

At school I was appointed a house prefect in the Lower Sixth and Head of School (and Head of House) in the Upper Sixth. Whilst obviously this did not mean I became a teacher, both myself and my opposite Head Boy became by default fairly heavily involved in the roles of the gap students, which sometimes involved covering classes of up to 20 children for anything between 30 minutes and 2 hours. I have also recently been invited back on two occasions to teach some Medieval History to a group of 11 year olds, once in the ICT centre, once in a more traditional classroom setting. Whilst I found these experiences challenging to a degree, I relished them and truly enjoyed the bubbly, buoyant nature of the children.

Tutoring Approach:

I am extremely dedicated and believe firmly in efficient preparation. Essentially what this means is I am always prepared, and the work I do is largely individual. What this means is no universal lesson plans. Every person that needs a tutor has hugely different wants and needs, and probably a good idea of what they are from the very beginning. My approach seeks to integrate those individual wants and needs, and also to acknowledge the individual strengths and weaknesses, and incorporate those into any tutoring.
Effectively I am not averse to any teaching method at all. I myself was at times a particularly difficult person to teach, and I benefitted greatly from a hands-on personalised touch at school, as it allowed me to really explore areas I otherwise might not have been able to.

About Lynne:
I am a friendly and approachable teacher and have high expectations. I try to help and encourage my students to reach their potential and enjoy their time with me.

Teaching Experience:

I taught in a secondary school for over six years until 2006 and since this time have been tutoring. I have experience across the 10-16 age range and ability range. I am also experienced in working with lower ability children, including those who have a Statement for Educational Needs. I teach both History and English up to GCSE and am experienced and skilled in exam preparation.

Tutoring Approach:

I am a patient and caring teacher and before I start with the lessons I discuss with the parent and the pupil their subject weaknesses. I also discuss what they are learning in school not only to give me the ability to help them understand the subject, but also to enable me to know what they want to achieve through my teaching. I give homework and then discuss with the pupil the different ways that they can make improvements so that they gain confidence with their studies.

I have excellent people skills and try to build a good relationship with my students so that they enjoy their lessons.

About alena:
I have recently completed a degree in History, at Swansea University with a high 2:1. However, at the beginning of my degree i studied media studies. I studied media and communication studies, History, english lit/lang and Sociology for my A levels. I recieved high marks in all of them, ranging from A's to B's and one C.
At the moment I am taking a year of studying in order to save up money for travelling. However, next year i aim to further my education by studying philosophy in Cardiff University.
I am a keen book worm and even when not studying I love rto read a broad spectrum of subjects. Currently i am extremely interested in any book concerning anthropology and the story of how life on this planet began.
After my studies i am considering teaching as a career so any work tutoring will be an asset to me as i am keen to help otehrs and share my knowledge and experience.

Teaching Experience:

I am currently assisting my younger sister through her history gcse. I also have another sister who i am assisting through her Sociology and Media Studies A levels. Both seem to be doing really well and thier grades are improving.
I have tutored many friends and family to use a computer from complete beginner to compentent independent user.

Tutoring Approach:

I have learned from being a student myself that the key to learning is discussion. By discussion i do not just mean explaining the subject but becomming involved in heated debates. For me tjis did not just make learning fun, but it also helped me develope a greater knowledge of how to argue a subject from each side, which is a key component in subjects such as English and History. Open debates also helped me gain confidence in myself and the issues addressing, therefore i believe this to be an vital method of tutoring.
I am a very patient and fun person, therefore once i know what is needed to be taught i will teach in the way i am confident will be suitable.

About Daniel:
I originally come from Coalville, in Leicestershire. When I was 12, I moved to Cincinnati, Ohio, USA for 5 years, during which I travelled around most of the country with my parents, visiting many historical sites. I love to travel, so since then I have been to Italy and southern Africa. I was always a good student, and in my spare time I enjoy reading, playing sport and video games.

Teaching Experience:

I have no formal teaching experience, but I've been giving paid guided tours of York for a private company for just over a year. This has greatly enhanced my communication skills. I'm a recent graduate of the University of York, where I got a BA in Archaeology. During this course I gave several assessed formal and informal presentations to a range of different audiences.

Tutoring Approach:

I am an enthusiastic person with recent experience of education. I try to make my guided tours fun and educational, so that's the approach I would bring to tutoring. I have an eye for detail as well, which would be good for double-checking work. I am also good at explaining things. My chosen subjects that I would like to tutor are History, Geography, French and English, because I was good at these subjects at school and because I enjoy them.

About Elaine:
I am a fully qualified teacher, who still teaches in the East Sussex region, I also have a fully enhanced CRB check.

I will provide 1-1 tutoring or will take on groups of no more than 3 students at a time.

Teaching Experience:

I teach Geography and History up to key stage 4 along with Leisure and Tourism only for key stage 4.

I have been teaching for 2 years, and still have energy and enthusiastic about my subjects!

Tutoring Approach:

I have a very enthusiastic approach to learning and hopefully this shows with my successes in my school career, I believe that students need to learn things under a teacher supervision, and not a teacher spoon feeding their students all the details. Whilst some spoon feeding is inevitable it is not the only way to learn, kinaesthetically, visual and aural is needed for a healthy learning balance.

I will provide 1-1 tutoring or small group tutoring for no more than 3 students at one time. I will go through what the student(s) require help with and focus on these problem areas.

If they need help with revision, then it will be an investigative approach but always the main focus will be the student doing the work, so that they develop a clear understanding of what they are revising, learning - so that it will stay with them for their exams.

About Janet:
I teach History, Politics (and also sometimes Psychology and Sociology) in a local secondary school but work only part-time and so have spare time to take up some private tuition work. I am patient, friendly and approachable and I also have three children of my own (two of school age) and so have a wide experience of the problems that students can experience during their education. I really enjoy teaching and like being able to offer my students one-to-one attention.

Teaching Experience:

I have been teaching for 24 years, mainly in secondary schools but also in Further Education where my students have ranged from 16 to 60 years. I have done private tuition work and also a little university teaching when I was a postgraduate student. I have taught History, Politics, Psychology and Sociology up to AS/A2 level and I have a great deal of experience of helping students prepare for the requirements of these examinations.
I have also taught English up to GCSE level.

Tutoring Approach:

I aim to go over the course content and help the student to develop a good and profound understanding of the topics studied and try to get him/her fully involved in each session so that he/she can build up the confidence to be able to tackle examination questions independently and confidently.

About Yvonne:
I am 42 years old, female, and live in Witney, a growing town near Oxford. I am married and have a family of my own (now almost grown up! ) and have been teaching locally for almost 10 years.
I am outgoing, friendly, reliable and communicative. I have a passion for English language and literature and enjoy my job immensely.
In my leisure time I enjoy meeting friends, socialising, travelling, walks, theatre, reading and writing, gardening, yoga and swimming.

Teaching Experience:

I have 10 years teaching experience, covering a wide age range including Primary & Secondary after -school tuition, SATS/GCSE and ALevel preparation. I do 1-1 private tuition and groups. I also teach EFL at all levels from beginner to Proficiency, with particular emphasis on Cambridge Exam Preparation - PET/FCE/CAE/CPE & IELTS with a good success rate. I have tutored undergraduates preparing for Finals at Oxford and advised researchers on historical/literary background.
My first Bacherlor of Arts degree is in English Language & Literature and I graduated from Oxford University.
I then completed a Further Education diploma (teaching adults in Further Education ), and a CELTA/DELTA diploma for EFL teaching.

Tutoring Approach:

My approach to tutoring is fairly relaxed but very structured in terms of preparation and planning to provide for individual student needs. I administer an initial placement test and needs analysis and then design an ongoing 'course' of lessons linked to the length of study time required and the student's personal objectives - e.g - to pass ALevel English with good grades to enter University.
to gain IELTS level 7.5 for entry to UK University.
to gain a good level for English or three 'R's pre SATS and beyond
I also offer courses /lessons simply for interest/enjoyment/personal development.
I am flexible, adaptable to needs, and willing to travel to individual homes or invite you here to my own in which I have a purpose built teaching space, with lots of resources.

I believe in expression of voice and opinion, especially when studying literature, and encouraging students to reach their full potential. Above all, I hope to instil my own passion for language into the teaching I provide, leaving students fulfilled and genuinely having learnt something, whatever the outcome or objectives they wish to achieve.
