Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / From their home / Online
| About Jamie: I have recently graduated from the University of Dundee in English Literature (2:1) and I'm looking for some casual work whilst I secure a more stable career. I am a keen reader and I very much enjoy watching films and even the odd play. I am a friendly, outgoing person with a patient manner. I do not mind also providing a babysitting service whilst tutoring a student, be it the tutee or another child. |
Teaching Experience: Although I've not got any professional qualifications in teaching I am an educated, passionate and friendly person and I've also got a strong will to finish a project once I've started it. I'd be most diligent and exceptionally empathetic to any struggles the tutee might have with their studies; I struggled with a mild for of dyslexia in my primary years and then went on to do a degree in English! Safe to say that I can relate to a student's frustrations and have got my own ways of dealing with them. I've now taught two of my cousins (ages 6,9) in English, science and a small amount of maths. I've also taught my girlfriend and two of my friends how to drive (I've done an Institute of Advanced Motorists qualification and I'm cheaper than a proper instructor!). I was also involved with helping out in an a first year English class for those with learning difficulties whilst I was a prefect at high school. |
Tutoring Approach: When teaching someone I feel it is very important to understand the student's interests and abilities and then use those skills to approach the subject that they struggle with. For instance, someone who is excellent at History but poor at English might have an excellent memory for facts but a poor grasp of language. What I'd do in that situation is convert language into what it essentially is; a set of rules and facts, most likely with the aid of humorous and memorable phrases or other psychological triggers. With this technique, and this particular hypothetical student, I'd maneuver their useful abilities into a position that they were able to bootstrap their less proficient skills. |

Types of Tutoring: Travels to you
| About Glenn: A dynamic and young teacher, with a breadth of experience, I am passionate about the development and growth of young minds from all different backgrounds. My commitment towards a new challenge is unquestionable, as I believe self belief and determination are the keys to success. These are qualities that I always aim to bring out in my students and strongly feel that the best way to lead is by example. |
Teaching Experience: Having taught in a number of schools, predominantly in the Hertfordshire area, my teaching experience has been with students from 11 - 18 years old. Within this age range, I have taught (and still am teaching) from the A* level to learners who are lower in ability, some with special educational needs. This has enhanced my skills in terms of differentiation. I currently teach English at key stage 3 and 4 (11 - 16) but have had experience teaching English language and literature at AS and A level. In terms of Media, Communication Studies and Sociology, my expertise ranges from GCSE to A level. |
Tutoring Approach: My approach towards tutoring is one that is tailored to the tutee/s needs and draws on their preferred learning style. I am adaptable in terms of working on a one to one basis or in small groups. I am a firm believer in the benefits of assessment, both formative and summative, as this will ensure that progress is being made. Independent study is also vital to the success of a student, something that I encourage and a skill that I aim to develop with all tutee/s. |

Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / Online
| About Fani: I am a PhD student doing research on Iranian Cinema. I have studied Film Studies in both undergraduate and graduate level and wish to share this knowledge with others. I enjoy explaining theories and ideas in simple terms and this has been my writing style throughout my academic studies. I am looking forward to an academic career focusing on teaching and lecturing. I am a native Greek speaker and could also teach my language to those who are interested. I am very friendly, encouraging and supportive, sensitive to people's emotions, perceptive of how others feel. My education has given me a valid foundation from which I can proceed in offering to others what I have learnt and what I have found out myself, giving them space and time to also discover more. |
Teaching Experience: Unfortunately I do not have any teaching experience. |
Tutoring Approach: Although I have got no experience I could use the experience I gained from the others that taught me. What I enjoyed from my own tutors such as helping me to understand, to discover things my self and to express myself freely-independence and support- is something I wish to keep when teaching others. Nevertheless what I disliked, such as being overly critical over one's mistakes or impatient when one does not learn or understand on the pace he/she is expected, is something that I will avoid. I believe in listening to others before doing the talking and sometimes let the others lead the conversation in order to see what they are interested in and what they can learn from me. |

View Philip's Profile

Types of Tutoring: Travels to you
| About Philip: I am an English literature graduate from Cambridge, a teacher, graphic artist, digital photographer, sometime journalist (for arts website The People's Republic of South Devon), poet and actor who has recently returned to my hometown of Exeter. Back now in beautiful Devon, I have had the good fortune of tasting life in various places: I have lived in London, Bristol and Cardiff, and I also spent two years living and working as an English teacher in rural Japan. I love meeting new people and interacting with them on an intellectual and creative basis. I am an excellent communicator and have proven this by forging successful working relationships with people and children of different ages and nationalities. Furthermore, I adore the process of teaching: the awareness that a student has grasped or been exposed to something new, or has made an intellectual leap which he or she would otherwise have not been capable of, is incredibly rewarding and gives me a real buzz. |
Teaching Experience: June 2008-present Artist & Designer of Workshops on Comic Book Art and Graphic Storytelling to schools and community centres in the Exeter area. During my PGCE, specialised in targeting visual learners and delivered end of year assessed presentation on harnessing students' visual imaginations in the teaching of literature. Have designed & delivered workshops to students in Year 6 and above. I have designed a broad range of workshops on both practical and theoretical aspects of graphic storytelling. For more information, see my website and click on "Workshops". Oct 2006-May 2007 PGCE Teaching Placements 1: St Katharine's School in Pill, Bristol. 2: Bettws High School in Newport, South Wales. One of the poorest council estates in Western Europe, Bettws is considered a challenging placement and was extremely helpful in developing my behaviour management skills and strategies. 3: Brimsham Green School in Yate, outside Bristol. Taught individual lessons for all Years 7-13, including Media lessons for Year 13. Adapted, designed and delivered schemes of work for Years 7, 8, 9, 10 and 12. Responsibility for SEN classes in Years 7 and 8. Observed SEN teaching, drama and media lessons, form tutor sessions, PSE assemblies; engaged in pupil pursuits. Sep 2005-Jul 2006 Supply Classroom Assistant for New Directions Recruitment in Cardiff, working at Primary Schools in South Wales. Also during this period, some private tutoring with the agency 3A Tutors. Jul 2003-Jul 2005 Teacher of English as a Foreign Language in Japan. Worked on remote Japanese island Okinoshima. Employed by local board of education through internationally administered JET (Japan Exchange & Teaching) Programme. Worked at several Elementary Schools (children aged 7-13) and six Junior High Schools (children aged 13-16). Planned & Conducted Lessons on my own and in collaboration with Japanese colleagues. Assisted setting and assessing school examinations. Organised & Presented Seminars during school holidays to Japanese Elementary School teachers wishing to improve their English teaching skills. Produced accompanying literature. Organised Adult Evening Classes on a volunteer basis for the local community running basic conversation classes and English poetry classes. |
Tutoring Approach: Although I have taught in large classes of up to 45, I especially enjoy teaching in small groups or on a 1 to 1 basis. In this environment it is possible to gain an understanding of the way in which the pupil(s) operate(s) and learn(s) and to tailor the teaching accordingly. Fundamentally, I believe that learning must be a creative activity and the student must not be afraid of making mistakes. Furthermore, learning must be a self-conscious activity. The student must be encouraged to reflect on the ways in which he or she learns most efficiently, and to take responsibility for his or her own learning. The tutor, on the other hand, must be sensitive to the various intelligences and talents of his or her students, and adjust the teaching methods accordingly. At Bristol I was influenced greatly by the research on multiple intelligences and the language of learning. |

| About Deborah: Having spent the last six years writing creatively and critically from home (while raising a small family), I recently completed postgraduate modules at Oxford Brookes and Oxford University in English literature. I am studying at Oxford University for a postgraduate diploma in Theology. |
Teaching Experience: Supply teaching in Oxford Community School was been a real 'eye-opener'. My main teaching challenges were managing large groups, and maintaining interest in a variety of topics. Covering for the head of English and Drama at Magdalen College School during his paternity leave, I gained a good insight into life in an academically ambitious school. As a full-time position, teaching across the years in the upper school, I enjoyed working in a team of motivated skilled teachers. I have enjoyed helping out in the reception class and year 1 classes at St Barnabas School. Discovering how children learn as well as what they learn has been illuminating. |
Tutoring Approach: I found that tutoring requires a high level commitment, time, patience and dedication. I've taught many subjects as a personal tutor to students ranging from 15 to 50 years old, from English literature to Motivational psychology. |

View Harvey's Profile

Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / From their home / Online
| About Harvey: Harvey Parkes left his birthplace of Greater Manchester at an early age, and his formative years were spent in Spain. Of Icelandic descent, Harvey remains close to his ancestral roots, and has experienced a wide variety of cultures, people and places during his lifetime. Originally a Chemistry undergraduate, Harvey's professional career has taken in activism, journalism, anti-fraud senior management, and even (despite a total inability to draw) cartooning. Family ill-health saw Harvey move back north in 2001 and, after nursing his mother, Harvey decided to change career and move into filmmaking. Harvey is a first-class honours graduate in Moving Image at the University of Central Lancashire. He is also recognised as a leading authority in cognitivism and Deleuzean philosophy within the work of the Danish filmmaker Lars von Trier. As well as his writer/director output under the name Balti and Havana, Harvey has established a large corporate client base through his work under the banner of Elegua Productions. Harvey is currently shortlisted for the UK Young Screen Entrepreneur award for 2008; the region's only industry professional to make the shortlist for this honour. |
Teaching Experience: For the past two years Harvey has taught professional broadcast directing to third-year undergraduates at the University of Salford. Harvey has previously lectured at the University of Central Lancashire, and is also an available lecturer for the University of Bolton. |
Tutoring Approach: My approach to tuition is one that best encourages the importance of discovery and the broadening of horizons within each student. Film, in particular, suffers for not being thought of as a cerebral industry when nothing could be further from the truth. Using my broad knowledge base both in the industry and beyond, I use an informal and conversational style in order to break complex work down into its constituent parts; revealing the building blocks that make up all of cinema, and helping students to understand and explain how and why pieces of work succeed or fail. I am not a tutor who spoonfeeds facts by rote, preferring instead to cultivate an attitude of critical thought and understanding within each student which they can go on to apply throughout their life. |

| About Alexandra: I am a DPhil (PhD) student in philosophy at the University of Susex. Previously, I studied for a Master's Degree in Political Theory at the London School of Economics and Political Science (L.S.E.), and a BA in Media Studies. Given my interdisciplinary background, I have a flexible and open-minded and creative attitude to study, all the while ensuring targets are met and progress is made, regardless of training or level. I am multilingual and can relate to a variety of ethnic backgrounds, given my teaching and own immigration experience. |
Teaching Experience: I have taught students of different levels and abilites and have always have great success in helping them achieve their goals. I have worked with my last student, a Media Studies undergraduate, towards her final -year dissertation, which achieved a first class grade, despite the provisional fail grade before private tuition started. I have maintained a friendly, relaxed relationship with former students. I have also taught my younger brother consistently throughout the years. |
Tutoring Approach: I believe education is one of the most important endeavours in life. Given this, a passion for personal learning, and a committment to helping students achieve success, I am particularly fond of teaching. The interaction and creativity involved in exploring new ideas and ways to see the world means I relish the teaching experience, whereby horizons are expanded mutually. I am constantly developing new skills and approaches to engage students on both professional and personal levels. |

Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / Online
| About Aaron: I am primarily a music tutor offering help and support in all areas including instrument tuition for guitar, piano and drum-kit as well as classical and jazz theory. I am also qualified in a number of other subjects, the competitive rates of which are on my profile. I am a freindly, patient teacher and being 22 I have only recently left full-time education and so can empathise fully with students in all levels of education. |
Teaching Experience: I began teaching instrumental lessons at the age of 17 and have been widening the styles and ability levels that I am able to teach in the last 5 years. In the last year I have also begaun running workshops in schools in the subjects of media studies, music, drama and film studies. I have a BA Music and have also received traing in the Yamaha Method. |
Tutoring Approach: I beleive that teaching the syllabus is incredibly important for subjects which require exams and coursework, particualrly academic subjects. When I teach music I encourage the student to consider his/her strengths and weaknesses and tailor a method of teaching designed to work alongside the student which may or may not be similar to conventional classical approaches, depending on the needs of the student. Although my approachs to teaching different subjects vary, the objective is to help the student acheive their goal in a freindly, supportive and encouraging environment. This may be acheiving an A in GCSE maths, attainign grade 5 piano or simply to further the students own understanding of the subject. If the student has a clear idea of what it is they want to acheive, I will help them realise that. |

Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / From their home / Online
| About Andrew: I am a 28 year old Actor / Teacher, and I take great pleasure in learning new things all the time, and passing my knowledge onto others. Life is one great big education in which we should never stop learning. With this in mind, I am always open to learning things from my students, no matter what their age, this I feel, is the sign of a good teacher. |
Teaching Experience: I have over two years teaching at Secondary (High) School, I have also taught in Secure Units, Pupil Referral Units, Primary School, Nursery School, as well as running Drama workshops for people aged 10 - 50! |
Tutoring Approach: I believe it is important to be sensitive to the individual needs of your student(s), no two people are the same or learn the same way. If you are open to your students individual needs then it is easier to teach them as you know what angle you are coming from, what works for one doesn't work for all. It is important to empower your student with confidence and praise where necessary, and make sure any criticism is constructive. A lifetime's worth of patience doesn't go amiss either! |

| About Philip: My personal and vocational interests are varied and range from Gardening to International Politics. I have a passion for reading and culture, making me informed and knowledgeable in a wide variety of subjects. My weekends are spent walking my Dog in the countryside, which helps me to collect my thoughts and allows me to appreciate life outside of the City in which I spend most of my life. While I currently work as a part-time teacher and journalist, I have held many positions of varying responsibility. Throughout these professional experiences, I have been engaged in some form of teaching or training and have taught a wide diversity of people in a range of subjects. |
Teaching Experience: Having been a gardener for many years, the first subject I taught was gardening and landscaping, which was for long-term unemployed people who were working on environmental regeneration projects. Since then, I have taught in various colleges and for many charities and training providers. My teaching qualification is in adult education, but I have experience working with young people, as well as excluded pupils and (ex-)offenders. My teaching has usually been in Media- or English-related subjects, but I have also taught Critical Thinking, Sociology and Film Studies, to name but a few. |
Tutoring Approach: My main aim is to ensure that tutor and tutee respect each other and are able to talk to each other properly. While passing exams is important, creating a space in which ideas and thoughts can be shared is also necessary to assist with the learning process. Being a qualified teacher, I am able to assist you in your educational development. As a person, I am able to help you and ensure that you get more out of the experience than just a piece of paper. |
