| About Sarah: I am currently on the Graduate Teacher Programme, employed as a geography teacher at a high performing state grammar school in Birmingham. I have completed a BSc degree in Geography at The University of Birmingham and also recently completed a Master of Arts degree in a related subject. I am able to tutor at any level including A Level. I have a wide variety of resources and use successful and varied teaching methods to enable pupils to gain top results. |
Teaching Experience: I am currently teaching geography at Key Stage 3, GCSE and A Level as a trainee teacher on the Graduate Teacher Programme. I have been employed on a full time basis within school since September 2007 and will achieve Qualified Teacher Status within the next few months. Prior to this I worked for four years as a Regeneration Officer, managing large regeneration projects within the Birmingham area. I also have previous experience of tutoring French to primary school pupils. |
Tutoring Approach: I am able to tutor effectively and ensure pupils achieve the grades they need. I am able to explain things clearly, am patient and have a very logical approach. My experience allows me to use a wide variety of real-life examples to illustrate examples and really ensure pupils understand key features and processes. I use a lot of visual aids and multimedia sources such as video/DVD clips, audio clips and educational web sites to really bring topics alive. I am able to tailor my teaching style to the preferred learning style of the individual pupil and am therefore able to achieve great results. |

Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / Online
| About Stephen: During my studies at University College London, I've been exposed to a diverse range of subject matters in both Earth Sciences and Zoology. My degree was primarily in Palaeobiology, and covered aspects such as Invertebrate and Vertebrate Palaeontology, Genetics, Botany, Micropalaeontology and Molecular Biology. I have a keen interest in the sciences, specifically in vertebrate evolution and biogeography. Having studied at UCL for four years, my abilities in problem solving, analytical skills, organisation, time management and communication has naturally progressed beyond my previous levels reached at college. My analytical ability, along with practical ability has also been honed as a result of strong scientific study, which has been supplemented with numerous field and lab experiences. In the realm of Palaeobiology, I developed a particular interest in using phylogenetic trees to decipher past and present biogeographical patterns. I am particularly interested in vertebrate evolution and biodiversity and this was well supplemented by numerous courses such as Animal Form and Function, Palaeontology, Mammalian Evolution and Advanced Palaeontological Analytical Techniques. I was also given the opportunity to work under Dr. Paul Upchurch (UCL, former Cambridge) in a study of the Mesozoic group of flying vertebrates, the Pterosaurs. This study was highly successful, and is now being prepared for publication in the journal Proceedings of the Royal Society. My strong interest in vertebrate groups ranges from Pterosaurs, to early Amniotes and to primates. Paleoecology is another field that carries a particular interest, specifically in relation to biogeography and ecological niche partitioning. This has been supported by both conventional zoological studies and from evolutionary genetics. |
Teaching Experience: I have also completed 7 months of a PhD/Teaching Assistant post at the University of Aberdeen. The involved the training of MA students in using Excel for scientific databases, and it's application in providing visual aids for presentations. I was also heavily involved in training the students in producing power point presentations, to convey effective scientific themes to the public. The students were also directly assessed by myself, and trained in producing reports and essays of a good enough standard to be published. |
Tutoring Approach: As my degree was primarily a multi disciplinary subject, my approach to teaching very much follows this structure. I believe in teaching certain subjects through the point of many examples, in different disciplines. This allows the student to grasp the connectivity between the sciences, and the true reality of research in the modern world, which is almost now entirely geared towards multi disciplinary studies. As I attended a world class institution such as UCL, many of the lecturer styles throughout my degree has heavily influenced my ability to teach. I now approach teaching in the manner of allowing the student to consider all alternatives to different theories and methods, and then proceed to guide them in understanding why certain theories/hypotheses are held in higher regard than others. |

| About Maeve: I am a 28 year old Irish girl, who has been living in London since 2003. I am currently on formal sabbatical from work as a senior environmental consultant, which I have been for the last 4 years, as I am reseraching other careers. I am enthusiastic, patient, kind and understanding. I have been through the Irish school system, but am familiar with the GCSE and A-Level systems and curriculums. |
Teaching Experience: I was part of a homework club, a community liaison between a Dublin community and my university (Trinity College) in 1997, helping an individual student (aged 12) with their homework. I was a supply teacher for a number of schools in Ireland from Sep 2002 to June 2003, teaching biology, chemistry and maths. In addition, I provided grinds for a Leaving Certificate student (approx A-Level standard), in biology, chemistry and maths. |
Tutoring Approach: I like to talk through the areas with which the student is having difficulties, and to see the standard at which they are at. Then, dependent upon their standard, I either go back through the basics with them or concentrate on specific areas of study. I consider each student as an individual. |

| About Richard: I have just finished doing a Master's degree in Earth Sciences at Cambridge University. My degree specialism is Earth Sciences. During my Bachelor's degree I studied a variety of subjects including Physics, Mathematics and Chemistry in addition to Geology. I am therefore well prepared to tutor to levels well in excess of A-levels in these four subjects. |
Teaching Experience: I have extensive experience with tutoring undergraduates as a Master's student. This was generally on a 2 or 3 to one basis, but the situation is essentially the same as with a 1 to 1 situation. I have also tutored for Oxbridge tutors, both in the specific subject areas mentioned above and on successful strategies for getting into Oxbridge. I have general experience with working with younger students through work at Science Festivals and with Time Truck, an outreach program of the Cambridge Earth Sciences department which involved visiting local schools to teach young children about the Earth and environment. |
Tutoring Approach: My approach varies depending on the needs of the tutor. Sessions can either be tailored towards exam success or a general education in the sciences - or, where appropriate, a combination of the two. I feel that I am particularly well placed to deliver a general education in the physical sciences, having been educated to a high level in most areas. My approach to tutoring is highly supportive. I find that a key to success is to establish a tutee's abilities and working level quickly. Material can then be tailored to their needs, which means that a student can be stretched without scaring or putting them off. This is one of the major benefits of 1 to 1 or small group tutoring. One area I am particularly keen on is bringing in relevant examples or questions from unfamiliar subject areas or contexts. I find that this is an extremely effective way of stretching a tutee without pushing them beyond their abilities. This keeps material fresh and interesting. With luck this method allows me to engage the most reluctant of tutees in an new area. I have often found that if a tutee is fired up about a subject area then half of the battle is already won! I have also found being relatively young to be a benefit. I remember the process of learing vividly and find it easy to engage with tutees. |

| About Jonathan: I am a graduate Geologist, studying for an MSc in the Science of Natural Hazards. I have a strong Physics/Chemistry background as well as all aspects of physical geography. With A-levels in Maths, Physics, Chemistry and Geography, I have a well rounded approach. I believe that to do well at a subject, it is not just about passing exams. I think that the secret is to be interested, excited, and stimulated to learn. |
Teaching Experience: I have taught under-graduates Physics/Earth Science at degree level, and I have also given presentations in schools. I have tutored in Geology and Chemistry, and some Physics. |
Tutoring Approach: Tutoring is about helping to develop someone with their learning. I believe that the best way to learn is to be interested in the subject area. Going out with the aim of just passing exams is not the key... Success will come through not just hard work, but by excitement, discovery and enjoyment. |

| About Andrew: I am an undergraduate student studying for a BSc Hons. in Molecular and Cellular Biology at the University of Bath. From June of this I year I will be commencing a year long industrial placement at in Bracknell. I have a good sense of humour and a friendly, patient disposition. I take a meticulous and imaginative approach to my studies and relish a challenge. |
Teaching Experience: I have no formal teaching experience. However, I worked as a qualified assistant coach in my local badminton club for a number of years prior to commencement of my degree course, coaching junior players from the age of 6. During my time in sixth form I ran an Earth Sciences workshop for primary school children. In 2004, for a period of two years, I taught a person with special needs how to use a computer. |
Tutoring Approach: In commencing a structured, syllabus-focussed approach, I work towards the goal of ensuring that my tutees feel secure about their abilities and the course content in preparation for exams. Every effort will be made to ensure that a sound understanding of the concepts underlying the facts is gained. I realise the importance of a good working relationship with my tutees. A pre-tutoring meeting will be arranged so that I can judge what requirements the tutee has and so that he/she can decide whether or not they will feel comfortable commencing a course of tuition with me. |

| About Sarah: I hold an Honours Degree in Environmental Biology. I have the education and experience to teach most science related subjects. |
Teaching Experience: I have been working on a self-employed basis since graduation, offering private tuition to friends, family and their children. In addition, I am registered with a tutoring agency whereby a CRB check has been carried out. |
Tutoring Approach: I am a very patient and understanding person. My approach is to take a subject and study in small sections over a period of time. I believe that a student can become very overwhelmed with science. I therefore believe in structuring study at a very steady pace during the course of a week. |

| About Sarah: I am an Oxford University Graduate (BA in Ancient and Modern History). I am currently working on a MA in International Relations. I am originally from the United States, and attended a renounced Science and Maths Institute there before attending Oxford. |
Teaching Experience: I spent 2006-2007 school year teaching Maths and European History at Stone Mountain School in North Carolina in the USA. I was working with boys aged 11-18, specializing with students with Dyslexia and other learning disabilities. In 2004 and 2005 I spent 6 months in Panama tutoring. I worked with students ages 9-16, and worked primarily with students who had grown up speaking English and had only recently been enrolled in Spanish speaking schools. |
Tutoring Approach: Most student I have worked with have been learning for a specific exam or syllabus. Therefore, I usually use this as the starting point from which to begin each lesson, and then try to discover which aspects of a subject interest the student and use this to build their knowledge base and understanding upon. |

| About Banerjee: I am currently a student of MSc. Automotive Engineering at Coventry University.I have done my BSc. Mechanical Engineering from India and have worked as a Marine Engineer for 3 years in Merchant Navy.I have a good record in my academics specially in all the science subjects.I am fluent in verbal as well as written in three languages, English, Hindi and Bengali. |
Teaching Experience: Having studied in a convent in India from the famous Jesuit Father's group, I proudly say that I am a student of St. Xavier's school, a brand all through the world.I have done private tutoring in India about 4 years during my BSc. Engineering days and I have seen tutoring comes naturally to me.Had I not been an engineer I'ld have been a tutor. My prowess in science subjects help me to teach with more authority and confidence. |
Tutoring Approach: As the saying goes, a good tutor necessarily don't need to be a good student rather he needs to be a very patient man and a good orator.I believe to express your knowledge you need to have a very good communicational skill and the thought process should start by thinking on the same way as the student. It helps you to understand what is his/her problem rather finishing your lectures.A tutor is satisfied when he sees his student doing well in assignments.A good student is actually a pride of a tutor. |

| About Carla: I am a 29 year old PhD student, who will be commencing doctoral study at the University of Durham in Biological Anthropology in October 2008. I am originally from the UK, however I have studied and worked in the United States for approximately 15 years. I returned to the UK in 2005 in order to undertake an MPhil degree in Biological Anthropology from the University of Cambridge. I received my BA in Anthropology and a BA in Hispanic Studies from Johns Hopkins University in Maryland, USA. I studied Anthropology for one year at La Universidad de Chile and La Catolica Universidad in Santiago, Chile. Finally, I graduated from high school in the United States as the Valedictorian of the class (top student out of 233 graduating pupils over a four year period). I have since worked for an international non-profit field research institution in the US and UK for approximately five years as a science officer in the disciplines of Social Science and Archaeology, through which I have traveled extensively internationally. |
Teaching Experience: Within an academic setting, I was asked while studying for my MPhil at Cambridge University to be a graduate mentor for the in-coming postgraduate students at Clare College. My responsibilities included providing any necessary advice regarding course selection, department information, or specific academic queries that would arise throughout the year. Based on my examination results during my undergraduate study, I was asked by the mathematics department to act as a peer calculus tutor, where I would spend an average of one hour a week with other calculus students in helping them to prepare for exams and in completing coursework. While studying in Santiago, Chile, I was employed as an English Language Teacher (British and American English) within a large telecommunications company and as an English language tutor to the Minister of Mining. As a high school student, I was a tutor in a progressive first grade mathematics programme where I was teaching elementary geometry to a group of 8 students, ages 6 - 8 years old as part of an educational enrichment programme. |
Tutoring Approach: My approach to tutoring is primarily to listen to the needs of the student, assess what the specific weaknesses are, determine what goals the student has for improvement, and finally develop a tutoring plan that is satisfactory to the student's aims and one that he/she will feel comfortable and confident in undertaking. I feel that organisation is a key factor in determining the relative success of any student so part of what I would try to instill in a student would be tips and techniques for organising assignments, organising study space, prioritising course requirements, and the mechanisms by which the student studies, even before any book is opened or specific material is discussed. I also feel that I can provide a lot of tips and techniques for memorisation and internalising the information, whether this be pneumatic devices or association exercises. Finally, I think the most important thing is to show excitement for any discipline that a student is having difficulty studying. Chances are that if a student finds a topic boring, then they are going to lack excitement and dedication to learning the material. It is of the utmost importance to be able to break the information down in a way that provokes interest, makes a personal connection to the student, and provide a real-world example for the topic at hand to be relative and pertinent. |
