About Alva:
I have graduated from Imperial College, having studied biochemistry and am now pursuing my PhD in London. I enjoy teaching and am looking to tutor in biological sciences to undergraduate students, A level students or those studying for GCSE examinations.

Teaching Experience:

Previously I have experience in tutoring A level students in biology and chemistry. I have also taught many undergraduate students by given small group tutorials and lab practical demonstration.

Tutoring Approach:

I enjoy the one on one teaching as you can focus on students targets and the student will be able to see much improved results. I also try to understand the weakness in the students' knowledge quickly, and try to increase their understanding of the principals behind the problem areas.

About Jiahui:
I am a Chinese student studying Pathology and Microbiology at University of Bristol. I achieved 3As 1B at A-level including Maths, Further Maths, Chemistry and Biology. My predict grade in university is 2:1. As a Chinese student from Canton, I am fluent in both Cantonese and mandarin. Also I am quite good at science subjects.

Teaching Experience:

Though I have no experience in teaching, as a top student in school, I always give academic help to my friends and other people around me.

Tutoring Approach:

Depending on the level of the student, I will vary my approach to tutoring. In general, to teach a second language to a student with entry level, I will teach the general grammar and provide frequent communications with the student. To further study a second language, I could provide extra reading, or even the learning of ancient Chinese, poems, etc.

To teach a science subject, I would prefer providing an intensive practice of questions.

About Shirley:
I am a friendly and outgoing person who loves to smile. I am patient and understanding and currently an undergraduate taking a joint honours in chinese and english.

Teaching Experience:

I was a trained peer supporter in secondary school where I aided younger students with their class/homework. There I also worked with teachers in finding and trying out fun ways to encourage students to learn and take part in community/social events. A key aspect of the job was to provide support for any students with any social issues.
For the past year I worked with tutoring my younger cousin in her keystage 3 mathematics.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe that everyone learns best with different methods be it taking notes or practically taking part, therefore I like to adapt my teaching methods to best suit each learner. However I have a few basic rules and guidelines, to ensure the tutee understand how things work. To understand the method and approach to reach the answer which is more significant than the actual answer itself at times. Often I like to revisit and go back to basics.

About Paula:
I am a college health and social care lecturer with a background in nursing and music. This wide range of skills and experience means that I am able to teach various subjects including personal and professional development; anatomy and physiology; and flute (to an advanced standard), piano and music theory.

I recently completed and passed the Certificate of Education (Post-compulsory) awarded by Liverpool John Moores University; I graduated from Liverpool Hope University with a 2:1 in French and music and am also a qualified nurse (RGN).

Teaching Experience:

I have over 10 years' experience in teaching both children and adults. My teaching experience is wide and varied. Examples include: teaching health care assistants how to use technical equipment; piano, flute and music theory to children aged 5-15; and BTEC levels 1-3 and AS level in health and social care to students aged 16-19. I have experience both in schools and as a private tutor.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe that a relaxed (though firm when required!) approach is needed for maximum learning and I negotiate goals with all learners. The subjects that I teach, eg, music theory and CV writing, can sometimes be rather dull and "dry", so, one of my main aims is to put the fun back into learning. Learning can be challenging and it's good to stretch the individual intellectually but you're also allowed to enjoy yourself during the process!

About Min:
I am a Chinese native speaker who is fascinated by my own culture and language and have a passion to teach this great subject and keen to share the beauty of my language with others.
I have just finished the CLTA (Certificate in Language Teaching to Adults) course, which took place in Goldsmiths College, University of London. I am so delighted I have achieved "A" grade in my teaching practice assessment. I have successfully applied the other part time teacher training courses on the lifelong learning sector which start in September. I believe that that private tutor's post will be a great opportunity to put my theory study into practice, improve my teaching skills and fulfils my ambition.

Teaching Experience:

1996-present Teaching my own children Chinese
Teaching four skills of Chinese language
Motivating them to continue to study and leading them to reaching their target
Creating tailored made lessons to facilitate my children's needs
Monitoring their progress
Introducing Chinese culture

2006-Present Ealing Chinese School/ Saturdays
Teaching all areas under the school's syllabus
Planning and preparation of student work
Organising classroom and school activities
Classroom management
Assessment, marking, students' report writing

2003-2007 private lessons (basis on one to one)
Teaching four skills of Chinese language but focus on speaking and listening
Adjust to different personalities and learning styles
Monitor student's progress on a continuous basis
Identifying students' strengths and weaknesses and adapting teaching methods as appropriate
Assessment, marking, students' work

Oct 2007 - Jun 2008 Practice Chinese teaching in Goldsmiths College, University of London
Present Chinese lessons to adults' students
Search teaching resources and preparing learning materials
Identifying students' strengths and weaknesses and adapting teaching methods as appropriate
Planning and preparation of student work
Organising classroom activities

Tutoring Approach:

I would stick to one or two straightforward objectives for one lesson and kept my materials as simple as possible. I would use contrasting pictures and colour word cards in order to demonstrate opposites. When presenting new grammar, I will kept it basic without going to in depth in order not to confuse learners. I would use a lot of self-made flashcards to present vocabulary. Moreover, I would use self-made puzzles including strokes, components and radicals and guided the learners to using logic, intuition and elimination to make up a character after they have gained some Chinese character's knowledge. It is also important to make learning fun and entertaining so I would try to maintain some humour when teaching. I would like to make the lessons interesting, enjoyable and memorable and students obtain the knowledge of the Chinese language through entertaining and the subconscious way. Last but not least, I would use up-to-date course books and learning material.

About Zi Yuan:
I am a Chinese student in Newcastle University, studying Media, Communication and Cultural Studies at BA level.
I attained grade A in the subject Chinese (which deals with Mandarin) when finishing my senior high school in China. I am good at both formal and daily Mandarin.
Additionally, I live in the most important city in the south of China, Guangzhou, where Cantonese is the local language, thus I can speak very well Cantonese.
I am able to speak fluent English as well, thus I have no problem communicating with English speakers. Having grown up with 2 younger brothers, I am also very patient and easygoing.

Teaching Experience:

I don't have much teaching experience since I have just started my university study myself. However I had been a volunteered teaching assistant at an orphanage in my city for 6 months.

Tutoring Approach:

Hand-outs and key information will be provided by me, I will possibly use PowerPoint slide shows and videos as well, I can bring my own laptop for technical support if necessary.
I will try my best to make full use of the text books which students have already owned, if necessary, I might recommend a few extra books to help improve the study. However, it will be absolutely up to the student and the family to decide whether they should buy it or not.
