| About Aisling: I am passionate about teaching as I love to share knowledge and cultivate the love of learning in others. I have a wide range of subject interests, though archaeology, history and art are my main interests. Some specific topics I have researched include: Renaissance & 17th century art and theory; Romanesque art & architecture; Greek & Roman art, archaeology and history; art in France 1850-1900; archaeological and art historical methodologies and theories. I am currently undertaking a Masters in Maritime Archaeology and History. I am also a practicing artist, working mostly in pen & ink, with a current installation in Bristol's St Stephen's Cafe. |
Teaching Experience: At University level I have taught on a Japanese Art & Architecture course to 2nd year undergraduates (at Trinity College Dublin). This included lessons on the Tea Ceremony, Namban Art, Zen Buddhist Art and the Art of Dress. I have also taught computer and English studies in Sri Lanka to primary school students and adult monks (at the Centre for Eco-Cultural Studies). I have spoken at conferences, as they are an excellent platform to foster interest and debate in a range of subjects (at Belfast and Cork, Ireland). |
Tutoring Approach: In all my teaching I like to motivate the love of the subject. By illustrating why something is interesting, there is more reason to appreciate it and become dedicated to it. I construct teaching modules to suit the needs and time constraints of the pupil. I hope to make learning a pleasant and rewarding experience that will benefit the pupil for life, not just for exams. I can also offer informal, creative drawing classes. |

View Melanie's Profile

Types of Tutoring: Travels to you
| About Melanie: I have a range of experience working with children and consider myself to have a compassionate, approachable and friendly personality. I began my teaching career as a Classroom Assistant working in a secondary school in the Learning Support Department. The school is located in a disadvantaged area. I gained beneficial experience working with children who have difficulties with both their learning and their behaviour. Following that I worked as a Group Leader for an activities camp. I prepared fun and stimulating activities for children aged 5-14. I was asked to return as Camp Director the following year due to my enthusiasm for the company and my ability to organise large groups of children and adults while maintaining a positive manner. My probation year was spent in an inner city school that has a high population of children with English as an Additional Language. The school shares a building with a Bilingual Support Unit and a nurture class to support children that have Social, Emotional and Behavioural difficulties. Being heavily involved with both areas of support due to the make up of my class has provided me with strategies to deal positively with behavioural problems and an understanding of how to teach bilingual children. |
Teaching Experience: I was responsible for a composite Primary 5/4 class of 22 pupils. There is a diverse range of Additional Support Needs within the class. I planned and implemented programmes of work to cater for these needs and create individualised learning plans to support identified pupils. I also covered other stages throughout the school from P1- P7 on a weekly basis. I contributed to the development of the school through the school improvement plan. I was given responsibilities and meet with staff on regular occasions to discuss school matters, school policies and school or curriculum development. I was involved in the ICT development working party. I actively involve children in their learning. I share learning intentions and success criteria using WALT/WILF to ensure pupils understand what is expected of them. I use a visual timetable and personal learning plans of work to support the children in the class that are EAL or have Additional Support Needs. I have high and achievable expectations of children both in learning and behaviour in line with school policies. I use positive language to praise both in classroom activities and in correction of pupils work and create regular opportunities for pupils to experience success |
Tutoring Approach: As a supply teacher I have had experience of working in all stages throughout a primary school. I have experienced a range of different teaching styles and can adapt my teaching style to suit each environment. I have a calm and approachable manner and understand the importance of developing programmes of work that suit each individual learners strengths and abilities while making learning interactive and fun. |

Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / From their home / Online
| About Patrick: I am an Associate Lecturer at the Manchester Metropolitan University in the Faculty of Art and Design, and I am presently engaged in full-time postdoctoral research. I have studied both Art History and English at university, and feel equally comfortable with both. In my spare time I also write poetry and am currently writing a novel. I am presently a trustee at the Creative Living Centre, Prestwich, where I work as a tutor, art therapist, volunteer and secretary. |
Teaching Experience: I have taught at university level since early 2006 (at the University of Manchester and the MMU), and have also tutored students privately since September 2004. I have also been involved throughout that time in pastoral work in and around the university. I am fully trained at a university level for teaching and mentoring support. |
Tutoring Approach: I am especially good at helping students to realise and maximise their potential. I can help broaden their horizons and help them along, step by step, until they succeed at what they set out to do. I'm also excellent at tailoring my approach to the intellectual and emotional needs of each individual. I'm extremely approachable, diligent and conscientious. I'm easy to talk to and can relate to all levels. |

| About Ralph: I recently graduated from Bristol University with a 2.1 in Classics and have settled here permanently. I am an easy-going, amiable and approachable individual. In my spare time I play in a band and am very passionate about music, literature and film. |
Teaching Experience: I have little teaching experience although I come from a family of teachers so I guess it is in the blood. I have taught guitar a bit to good response and effect. |
Tutoring Approach: I believe that when it comes to teaching at school, a lot of the time the actual concept and basics of subjects are not given the required time. Once you have learned exactly how to solve a problem it becomes far easier to revise, rather than being taught simply what to do when faced by it. This skill is applicable to all subjects, especially maths and physics, and in my experience has helped enourmously when it comes to exams. |

| About Nora: I have just left a PGCE primary course after deciding teaching in a classroom environment was not for me at this point, preferring to work one on one with children. I am a language graduate from the University of Glasgow and currently live in Whitstable, Kent. I am very aware of the primary curriculum and my strong subjects are literacy, numeracy, art and languages. I am a very patient and hard-working tutor and see the potential in all individuals. I have developed very useful skills for spotting difficulties in learning, particularly at primary level and how these can be tackled effectively. |
Teaching Experience: Gallery of Modern Art, Glasgow. Educational outreach programme. Working with young people in art projects. Spanish and Portuguese private tuition to beginner adults. Work in primary schools as trainee teacher and before this as a helper. Teaching English in Chile to individuals and in a language school. |
Tutoring Approach: I am very thorough and would make sure I know exactly what is required from my teaching. For example if it is geared towards an exam or an area of learning that requires support, I would focus on this area and draw up a learning plan, within a time frame. I believe in encouragement and creating a safe, friendly teaching environment. I also believe in looking at individual needs and would not have a set, rigid structure for all students, especially with younger learners who require a variation of teaching methods. I am organised and use tuition time effectively to insure the students learning progresses. |

| About Rosa: I am currently a full time student at University College London studying Hebrew. I have a Cambridge accredited CELTA qualification in teaching English as a foreign language. I think it is important that every student can receive a patient, inspiring and confidence-building learning experience from a teacher who knows their subject well. I would be happy to try and fulfil this role in someone's learning either as a support to their current learning or a teacher in my own right. My strengths are languages, art and history. |
Teaching Experience: I taught English for one year in China at a Vocational school in Gansu. I also taught many one to one lessons during my time there as well as classes. I have spent one month teaching s Language School in Highgate, London. |
Tutoring Approach: First of all, it is important to identify which level the student is at. The next stage is to recognise the strengths and problem areas of the student. I would then gear the lesson towards working on the issue areas. If it is a long term teaching appointment, I would possibly ask what the student was hoping to achieve from the lessons. I would then structure and plan the lessons to achieve these goals. |

| About Susan: I am a flexible and adaptable experienced teacher across Key stages 1-3. My main interests are in the arts and aside from my career in teaching I have pursued a lifelong interest in ceramics. I have recently returned from living in France for eight years. My time there gave me the opportunity to develop my language skills while running my own pottery studio and school. I am now re-establishing myself as a tutor, as teaching has always been at the root of all my professional activities, whether as a classroom teacher, private tutor or support teacher. |
Teaching Experience: I have had teaching experience in primary schools in London and Kent. Teaching experience with excluded pupils with behavioural problems and developing programmes to integrate them back into school. I have also worked with Traveller Eduation Support Services in Kent. This involved working with children and their families on a one to one basis and then supporting them into mainstream school. In France I taught English to groups of French children and taught ceramics to groups of children and adults. |
Tutoring Approach: I believe that every student should have the opportunity to succeed and one to one teaching allows the tutor to develop appropriate individualised programmes of work to bring about success. The importance of self confidence and self esteem in the student cannot be under estimated and much of my teaching experience has involved recognising how these elements may affect learning. A combination of knowledge of the student, the subject to be taught and external pressures, enable me to develop a learning programme tailored to the needs of each student. |

| About Donna: I am 26 years of age. I have two children.. |
Teaching Experience: I have previous experience tutoring for Top Class Tutors,. I worked for Top Class for 18 months. I tutored boys and girls aged 4-16. From January 2005-January 2007 i worked at Newbold Community School. Newbold is a 'all inclusive' community school delivering the National curriculum to 1200 students across Key Stage 3, 4 and 5. I worked in a department of 11 members of Humanities Staff, teaching history, Geography, R.E., Business Studies and Sociology. I was also responsible for organising existing resources, creating new resources in line with teacher's requirements and requests. From Febuarey 2007-June 2008, i worked at Springwell Community School, as a Cover Supervisor. My role here was to cover prepared lessons on the absence of the normal teachers. This was to promote consistency for the students education. In September 2008 I am starting a degree for Primary education at Edinburgh University, where i intend to qualify as a Primary School teacher. |
Tutoring Approach: I want to teach as i find working with children extremely rewarding and enjoyable. I love explaining something to a child and see them grasp it and put it into action. I have a relaxed approach to learning and feel that education should be fun and a life long experience. |

| About Emily: I am currently studying for my A levels at college. I have a wide range of skills across the academic board, allowing me to be versatile in meeting each child's needs. I have warm, kind friendly nature, and therefore will always be understanding towards any child. |
Teaching Experience: I have previously had experience working as a mathematics and science tutor for a young boy of 13 with mild learning difficulties. I have also had work experience working in the S.E.N. department at Trinity Catholic High School at Woodford green. There I assisted a range of children, not just those with special educational needs, but some that were much more academically able. I worked one to one with children that needed extra care, and also as a class assistant in several maths classes. |
Tutoring Approach: My approach is that, every child should be given an equal opportunity to shine no matter what their background or circumstance. I believe that having a learning difficulty or any kind of impairment does not need to hinder them. I believe i have a unique method of teaching which can help improve any child's chance of success. |

Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / From their home / Online
| About Ralph: I have just completed a Masters course in Biology (Integrative Bioscience) at the University of Oxford, and previously gained first class honours in Natural Science (Zoology) at the University of Cambridge. In addition to this biologically centred University Education I have recent (2004) A-levels in Maths, Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Fine Art. So, I am very used to being in an academic environment and understand the needs of students at different levels of their education. I am always very happy to share the knowledge and understanding that I have picked up with others. |
Teaching Experience: Currently tutoring a student in preparation for GCSE mathematics, I have helped to prepare A-level students for (successful) interviews at Oxbridge colleges, and am keen to widen my teaching experience. |
Tutoring Approach: Firstly I would like to discuss with the student what they are hoping to gain from the tuition and then explore their current level of understanding in order to plan what would most benefit them. The tuition will probably consist mainly of discussion that engages the student's imagination and understanding of the subjects and highlights areas that might require improvement. Practical exercises will then be used where appropriate, with critical appraisal of the student's work. The tuition may be geared towards some particular goal (exams/interviews etc.) and in this case the desired end result will of course be kept in mind. |

| About Alison: I am 24 and currently work in a local art gallery. I studied History at Royal Holloway, University of London and Sydney University, Australia and then went on to take a Masters in Art History at Bristol University. I am a friendly and outgoing person with a real passion and interest for History, Art History and English. |
Teaching Experience: I have 8 years of experience helping to tutor both my peers and younger students on a one to one basis at University, A-Level and GCSE level as well as some primary students. This includes teaching factual information, assisting with research, instructing how to write essays and explaining how to structure successful exam answers. I have tutored pupils on a short term basis helping revision before exams as well as on longer terms, seeing pupils through a full course. |
Tutoring Approach: I believe that each person has a different approach to learning as well as different paces at which they learn. I have had much success in tutoring by trying different teaching styles until i find a suitable one for each individual. Learning doesn't have to be boring and a one to one teaching session is often more enjoyable for the pupil than a large class at school. I also believe that structuring essays and knowing how to answer exam questions are critical to success and are a crucial skill to learn. |
