Frances - Whitstable tutor

Information About Frances:

Personal Description:

I have strong background in AEN, adult learning disability and advocacy. My academic background is in Psychology and Sociology, so alongside my practical experience I have genuine theoretical insight into motivation, cognition and behaviour.

My main focus is to support self-esteem, irrelevant of the academic level is self-esteem. I am approachable, patient and understanding. Although I do have a strong academic background, I have had to work to gain this and I understand that one approach does not suit every student and I endeavour to understand the context of learning as well as the specifics of the subjects that the pupil requires support in.

Teaching Experience:

This is my 3rd year working in a secondary modern school for 3 years. For the first two years I worked 1-1 with AEN students. I specialised in statemented students with ADHD, ASD, dyslexia, non-specific learning disabilities. Most importantly, the majority of the students were disaffected - school refusers or students with severe behavioural problems. During this time I successfully taught Maths and French to students who were unable to access the mainstream classroom either through level of ability or behavioural problems. This included writing my own schemes of work, creating my own resources as well as the delivery.

Currently I work for 'Aimhigher' which is a government run scheme centred around the principles of widening participation. Alongside running this scheme in school, I teach in the 'Higher Education Transition Compact' in the 6th form and organise UCAS applications. I also mentor year 11 students who are either underachieving or who are on the 'Gifted and Talented cohort' who require extra support due to their ability.

Alongside this I have tutored a year 9 student who attends a grammar school. The focus of these sessions were to support here learning in Maths, French and Geography, but alongside this give support to her in terms of social and emotional issues.

Tutoring Approach:

My focus is always on supporting and encouraging self-esteem of the tutee. I feel it is important to get to know the student and their individual situation as part of the tutoring package to ensure that I can gauge the approach appropriately and design bespoke packages and differentiate it accordingly.

I take pride on my ability to prepare and deliver tutorial session that are bespoke for the individual's background and ability.
