Vivien - Crawley tutor

Information About Vivien:

Personal Description:

I am a friendly, outgoing mother of three, with first hand experience of dyslexia, the autistic spectrum, the statementing process and special needs schools. I am particularly passionate about music; and believe that everyone has musical potential. I play the piano, and violin, and I sing and conduct a children's and an adult choir. I have also been very involved in dramatic societies, particularly musical theatre. I'm creative; I enjoy all sorts of artistic activities, from journalling to beadwork, and painting theatre backdrops. In my spare time I am also often to be found playing darts for my local social club team!

Teaching Experience:

I qualified as a teacher in 1995, with a B.Ed(Hons)English, (2:1), from West Sussex Institute of H.E. I spent a year teaching at Corpus Christi RC Primary school in Portsmouth, where I had responsibility for music. I then moved into youthwork for the next 9 years, where I ran homework clubs, music and drama workshops, writing groups, young people's music groups, and was involved in many community drama productions. I was also very involved in pastoral care for young people. My youngest daughter was born with complex special needs, and consequently I have spent the last couple of years supporting her educationally, gaining first hand knowledge of teaching strategies. My eldest child is dyslexic, and I provided extra tuition for him at home until his GCSEs.

Tutoring Approach:

I firmly believe that learning can be, and is fun. It's important to build on what the child/young person does know, not focus on apparent 'failure to know'. I believe that education should be about the whole process, not just perceived academic success, and that we should be fostering a lifelong appetite for learning. An informal delivery style is underpinned by carefully structured planning, that includes regular assessment, so that tutor and pupil alike can be encouraged by visible progress.
