Karina - East Dulwich tutor

Information About Karina:

Personal Description:

I'm a native Croatian and I've lived in the UK for six years. Before that I lived in Iceland for three years and studied Icelandic.

I'm a language enthusiast. I enjoy learning and teaching languages.
I hold three BA degrees and an MA. I'm fluent in 5 languages (Croatian, English, German, Swedish and Icelandic).
I have learned German and English since I was a child and these are the languages I'm most proficient in (both written and oral).
I'm very organised and have very good interpersonal skills. I'm friendly, patient and a good communicator.

I enjoy reading, travelling and being outside.

Teaching Experience:

I'm an experienced teacher. I worked with small children (in a nursery school in Iceland), with primary school children, teenagers, university students and adults. I currently work as an Assistant and teach at University College London.

I started teaching when I was a student of German and Croatian language and literature at the University in Croatia.
I taught German to adults (all levels) from February 2001 to June 2003 in a School of Foreign Languages. I was also giving one-to-one tuition in German to businessman, university students and students preparing for their final exams in secondary school.
I held lectures on Icelandic culture, literature and language at the University of Zagreb for a month in 2005.
In Iceland I held a beginners course in Croatian language in October - November 2006.
From December 2007 to April 2008 I worked as a freelance tutor helping students (11-13) to prepare for their exams in German.

From December 2008 until May 2009 I helped a GCSE student in preparation for his exams in German.

Recently (March to May 2013) I helped an A-level student prepare for her exam in German and I'm currently also tutoring an adult learner.

I worked in an translation agency over a year whilst doing my MA degree in Medieval Scandinavian Studies. Since September 2011 I've been working as a part-time assistant and tutor at University College London.

Apart from teaching, as mentioned, I worked and am still working as a translator. I also worked for an MP and as an Distance Learning Administrator at International House London.

Tutoring Approach:

I prefer one-to-one tuition because I can direct all my attention to one student. I don't like to dominate whilst I'm tutoring. It's not about me. The student is the centre point. I'm only there to help the student achieve his full potential in the respective language.

The first time I meet the student I like to find out what their strengths and weaknesses are in the language, what we should work and focus on. Every student has individual learning style and it is my job to find the most suitable way to help the student learn the language. Grammatical rules are not learned by me holding a lecture. Through language usage the student comes to the conclusions about how the language functions themselves. This means that we'll use appropriate texts and conversational topics that are of interest to the student and work on them.
