Personal Description:

I am 26 years old and graduated from Oxford University 4 years ago with a First Class Honours degree in Ancient and Modern History. Since graduation I have worked for two charities in front line support roles and as a manager. I love my job and making a difference to people who are homeless and destitute, but I'm also passionate about history and literature, and about education. I want to support students to really enjoy their subjects and to succeed academically. I am very friendly and supportive and understand the pressures that exams and study can bring. I appreciate the investment of time and money that students and their parents make when engaging a tutor, and I want to make each session as enjoyable and valuable as I can.

Teaching Experience:

I have carried out a number of work experience and volunteer placements within schools however I don't have any direct teaching experience. As a result I am happy to negotiate low initial rates for my first tutees.

Tutoring Approach:

In discussion with the student and parents, I will devise a tutorial plan which focuses on the key areas identified as needing development. My approach draws heavily on the methods used within the Oxbridge tutorial system and has two main aims: to help the students develop practical study and exam skills, and to develop their knowledge, understanding and enthusiasm about the subject. I aim to consolidate and complement the student's school curriculum by offering one-to-one support with problem areas, but also encouraging the student to stretch themselves and work at a higher level.

Tutorials may include:
Reviewing, revising and consolidating material learnt at school
Building confidence in arguing a point verbally and in writing
Opening up new perspectives on a topic together through provision of additional reading matter and discussion.
Essay writing and exam practice with detailed criticism and attention to style, structure and arguments used.

Qualifications:

• First Class Honours in Ancient and Modern History, Oxford University.
• 4 A-Levels at A grade in History, English Literature, Latin and Classical Civilisations, and 2 S-Levels.
• Certificate in Counselling and Psychotherapy.
