Information About Austen:

Personal Description:

I am a charismatic cell biologist with a genuine passion for the sciences. I am also a reading master of public administration (MPA).

Professionally, I work as a post-doctoral research assistant in a large teaching hospital.

I am a published author, and when I lecture, I make my own stunning Powerpoint presentations.

I have a photographic memory (most scientists do). You must develop that also if you are going to achieve a good understanding of elaborate scientific concepts.

I am an excellent communicator and I teach by coaching.

Teaching Experience:

I have been tutoring GCSE / A-level students in the sciences for over 6 years now.

I have also assisted a number of university graduates with their dissertations (BSc & MSc level).

Further, I have experience in supervising PhD students in the department where I work.

Tutoring Approach:

My approach to teaching draws from my experience that students at GCSE level and above invariably need to be coached on HOW to tackle the subject matter with a genuine enthusiasm in order to succeed and achieve their academic potential.

Obviously, I am able to explicate specific elements and complex concepts to the student in a simple and logical manner, using visual aids wherever possible. But that is the remit of most tutors. My intuitive approach to teaching students aims to surpasses that important threshold.

My students will be invited to review their position with regard to their study routine. From this vantage point, we will together develop a strategic plan to deal with short and long term objectives. This approach will put the student in control of heir study goals. The student will thus learn how to MANAGE their resources and time.

With regards to revision/study groups, my approach is simple:
1- Determine exact nature of study aims (and time frame).
2- Construct a curriculum-based study guide for the students relating to the subject matter at hand.
3- Explain the material in the sequence established in (2).
4- Revise fundamental elements highlighted in (3).
5- Assess the knowledge of the student conceptually with emphasis on specific elements included in (4).
6- Address any requests for further explanation as they arise.
