Lucy - Harrow tutor
Information About Lucy:
Personal Description:
My name is Lucy. I graduated from Durham University with a first class degree in English Literature. I read widely, this is one of my greatest passions. I am now studying a Masters in Broadcast Journalism after receiving an academic scholarship and have plenty of free time to help students achieve their potential!
Due to the nature of my course I can offer a lot of flexibility, whether it is just for a one-off lesson to help on a difficult subject, or for a more intensive course to help a student along the way.
I am also a keen sailor and enjoy travelling and drama. I am outgoing and enjoy working with young people.
Teaching Experience:
I have plenty of experience with young people from all backgrounds- both in the education and in more informal situations- and am determined to prove that learning CAN be fun!
I worked as a schools coordinator at the Oriental Museum in Durham, coordinating school visits for groups of primary school children. This often involved lots of Egyptian headress making, trips to the museum's 'mummy' and hearing lots of gruesome stories about ancient medicine.
I spent last summer in Jordan teaching English to woman and children, and completing vocational tasks with disabled and deaf children. I took a one week teaching course at the British Council where I learnt lots of new ways to get difficult or different concepts across- we all learn in different ways!
I worked part time as a Student Ambassador whilst I was at Durham University, which involved raising aspirations for young people in the North East. I took part in lots of activities, whether short masterclasses, or residential visits where I was in charge of the welfare of a group of young people, and led educational and extra-curricular sessions.
I was a participant on the "Student Associates Scheme" and spent 4 weeks working as an English Literature teaching assistant in a school in North Yorkshire.
This summer I went to Costa Rica and taught underprivileged children aged 9-13, once again in English as a foreign language. I also worked with infant children at a daycare centre.
Tutoring Approach:
I think tutoring is very much a two-way process and it is important that the teaching method works for the learner, and that feedback is encouraged both ways.
There should always be a clear sense of target, and I would always ask a tutee to think about what they want to achieve each session. This reinforces a sense of achievement when each target is met. Of course sometimes it is appropriate to change goals but this is part of the fun, unpredictable world of learning!
I think that the tutee and the tutor have a joint responsibility to each other and in return for my time, would want the tutee to take the time to work on exercises set for them between tutorials, to maximise their learning. As this is not a classroom environment it is important that the young person develops a real bond with their tutor where they feel able to express how they are feeling about their learning, and to be honest about any concerns they may have.
Of course, every learner is different, and what works for one tutee may not for another! Most of all learning should be fun and I like to think that because I am still fresh from education myself, and because I have so much experience with young people, I am able to relate to the young learner with more ease than some other tutors.
