Elly - Brighton tutor

Information About Elly:

Personal Description:

I am a qualified art teacher, professional artist and illustrator currently based in Brighton. I graduated in 2006 BA (Hons) Illustration with Animation from Manchester Metropolitan University. I am currently studying an MA at Brighton University in sequential design and illustration.
Projects have included visual and conceptual identity for a Stoke On Trent record label SONS, including music videos and website; promotional design, illustrations and animations for independent film companies No Magnolia, Zoomcitta, and The Route; and illustrations for children's poetry. I have a huge interest in all areas of art and design, but my specialist area is in illustration, written word and narrative based works (stories, poems). I am skilled at drawing, painting, craft and hand-made work, and am developing skills in animation and film-making. I love teaching and I love taking part in anything creative, involving art and design.

Teaching Experience:

Since graduating, I have taken part in a wide variety of teaching activities, from voluntary workshops to supply teaching in secondary schools. This has included working with adult carers in Wythenshawe to produce short films about their lives, supply work in secondary and specialist schools throughout Manchester, and most recently working with arts organisation Eastside, in London, as a workshop assistant for film-making sessions with London teenagers. During my PGCE I was required to work on placement at a local college, planning and delivering art and design sessions to learners ranging in ages and abilities, from BTEC through to A-level. I have worked with a wide range of learners - I recently finished an artists' residency at a care home for people with dementia, and throughout the summer I ran art workshops for young people in anticipation of the 2012 Olympic games. I'm currently working with second and third year BA Graphic Design students at Salford University as a visiting lecturer.

Tutoring Approach:

I enjoy teaching and building a rapport with each individual learner. My strengths are in one-on-one sessions, as I find this is where I can have the most positive impact, providing unusual and stimulating activities, and in encouraging people's creativity and self-confidence. I am friendly and approachable - I keep sessions informal yet make sure they are well-structured, eclectic and challenging. I keep track of the learners' progress and try to develop the sessions according to this.
