Rosie - Bristol tutor

Information About Rosie:

Personal Description:

I am currently undertaking a Masters degree in social work at the University of Bristol, to qualify as a registered social worker after having worked within the broad social care field for the past 6 years, primarily in the homelessness and drug and alcohol sectors. I have a degree in English Literature and Language from St Hilda's College, Oxford University and a Masters in Cultural Studies from Birkbeck College, University of London as well as a range of qualifications in health and social care. My A Levels were all at A grade and were in English, Government and Politics, Religious Studies, Philosophy and General Studies. I went to Oxford from a school with little history of sending students to Oxbridge and was involved in access and widening participation initiatives during my time there. As such, I'm interested in supporting students through the university admissions process and more broadly as well as in specific English Literature and Language teaching.

Teaching Experience:

I mentored at a middle school in Oxford for over a year, providing tutoring and more general emotional support to 3 young people. I have also been involved in tutoring in less direct contexts while working in a Family Contact Centre and with young people and vulnerable adults as an outreach worker, mental health support worker and drug and alcohol worker. I have also helped to raise my much younger brother and have supported him with his homework on a regular basis. I have experience as a trainer within the social work field, teaching a range of specialist subjects to groups of 15 students and developing training materials, which has helped me develop me skills in evaluating the effectiveness of my teaching.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe that everyone has the potential to do well in their chosen subjects or other learning contexts when provided with support and encouragement. Through experience I have found that students and clients do best when allowed the freedom to make mistakes so that these can be learned from within a safe and secure environment and each student's own creative potential developed. I have found that this is the most rewarding way for people to learn and believe in the importance of enjoying learning for its own sake, while at the same time being well aware of the broader academic and educational framework that many students will be working within.
