Personal Description:

I teach part time in a secondary school in Inverness but now that my two daughters have flown the nest I have some spare time to give private tuition. I love my subject and enjoy the challenge of passing on this enthusiasm to others however reluctant they may be!

After teaching English for many years, I had a short break to have a family. During this time I was employed by Oxford University as an external marker for 'O' Level English Language examination papers. Later, I trained in Special Educational Needs as I was interested in the reasons why so many children find accessing the curriculum a problem. This gave me a greater insight into the importance of treating each child as an individual and the need to tailor my teaching to suit different learning styles. I gained Chartered Teacher status in 2007.

Teaching Experience:

* 1976 - 1991 - Full time English Teacher (inc HOD English Dept) in a large comprehensive school - Inner London Education Authority.

* 1991 - 1992 - Part Time SEN Teacher in a Middle School - Merton Authority
1992 - 1993 - SENCO - Middle School - Merton Authority

* 1994 - 2004 - Full time ASN Teacher in a large secondary school - Inverness Region (Highland)
2004 - present day - Part Time ASN teacher - as above.

Tutoring Approach:

I have been told that my approach is friendly and fun but I can be firm if need be. I base the tutor/tutee relationship on mutual respect. I will always try my hardest to bring out the best in the people with whom I work and in return I hope that they will give me their best too.

After an introductory session, I like to plan the goals and targets and deadlines in advance so that we know what we are working towards. Of course, within this, there is also the need for flexibility based on the rate of progress made.
