Oliver - East Grinstead tutor
Information About Oliver:
Personal Description:
I am a professional physicist, working to commercially develop new research microscope technology.
I enjoy spreading interest in physics and maths, and good understanding of physics principles. I believe that physics is not as hard as people generally think it is.
My favourite physics subjects are materials properties, electricity and magnetism, optics and astronomy.
I have a young family and enjoy music with them and friends; I play violin.
Teaching Experience:
I have taught A-level, GCSE and degree-level physics to students in 1-to-1 and small group tutorials, privately and employed by London and Durham Universities as a post-graduate tutor. I have taught maths-for-chemists at degree level in small groups, and GCSE maths in 1-to-1 tutorials. I have led astronomy teaching sessions with small school-age groups, with a mixture of practical observation and introduction to astronomy and optics.
I have worked with three local East Grinstead schools and my employer to organise and lead school-group visits (teacher-assisted) to industrial physics research labs. This introduced commercially relevant use of physics principles and experiments: baloons and liquid nitrogen, prisms, microphones, vacuum, cameras, microscopes...
Tutoring Approach:
Preparation / 1-off:
(1) Put the student at ease and make them feel the time should be about what they want to learn
(2) Find out what the student wants to learn and where they want to get to: suggest ideas if none forthcoming. Do research for exams on what's required and what would be interesting.
(3) Adjust the material to be covered to suit the tutorial and 'homework' time available.
(4) Divide the agreed 'syllabus' up into points to cover in each tutorial.
Repeat:
(5) In each session go over what the student has previously learnt, introduce a new concept and try several examples of how the new material is applied.
(6) Check feedback from student on how comfortable they are with the new material
(7) Set self-study work if agreed required / wanted
(8) Review progress against planned division of material in each tutorial
Subjects Taught:
