Information About Helen:
Personal Description:
I am currently a postgraduate student at the University of Leeds, I am due to start a PGCE course in secondary Physics in October 2008. In 2006 I gained a BSc (2.1 hons) in Astronomy and Philosophy, this covered all areas of physics to some degree including relativity, cosmology, quantum mechanics, atomic structure, mathematics for physicists and the history of the universe. I also studied relevant philosophy modules such as Philosophy of Science, Space and Time, and Biology. I am about to complete a MA in Philosophy of Physics, this course has involved studying the implications of relativity and quantum mechanics as well as the history of science and the impact of science on religion. It has involved considering how science should be defined, how it progresses and whether modern theories can be considered 'true'.
In order to share my enthusiasm for science I have created a website, The Star Garden, where I publish educational articles on all areas of science.
Teaching Experience:
From October 2008 I will be enrolled in an online course with Canterbury Christ Church University in order to gain a PCGE in Secondary school Physics. This 18 month course will involve a total of 6 months teaching experience.
Tutoring Approach:
I have a friendly, informal approach which I can adapt to the needs of the student. I believe that the best way to understand something is to find an interest in it and so I hope my enthusiasm will be encouraging. I will ensure that students have a full understanding of a topic before moving on and can provide feedback to parents on a regular basis.
