Sophie - Islington tutor
Information About Sophie:
Personal Description:
I am 20 years old and currently enrolled on the Cordwainer's Footwear BA at London College of Fashion. From 2006-2008 I took A levels at Southend High School for Girls, achieving an A grade in art, English literature, history, sociology and general studies. After this I took a gap year, working and studying Millinery before travelling around Europe. Last year I took an Art and Design Foundation Diploma at London College of Fashion which I passed with merit. I would like to use some of my spare time to tutor young people in the areas in which I am most proficient- art, design, various crafts including textiles, media studies, history and English language and literature (as well as the 11+ which I passed myself). I have considerable experience in all the areas suggested, particularly art and design, as well as with the British education system as a whole and feel I could use that experience to the advantage of potential tutees. On a personal level, I am very friendly, empathic, patient and approachable, and believe these qualities make me a good tutor. I am articulate and good with children and young people of all ages- still, of course, being young myself. I am also reliable, well organised and always punctual (when, that is, Transport for London keeps its end of the bargain).
Teaching Experience:
Due to my age I do not have any qualifications in teaching, but I do have a plethora of younger cousins so I am used to spending time with younger people and enjoy teaching and helping them with things. I come from a family of teachers and this has definitely rubbed off on me, I both enjoy and have been told I am good at teaching, especially art and design. In terms of actual experience, I regularly help an established Milliner who throws 'hat parties' to teach groups of adults how to make hats and fascinators. Whilst in sixth form, I also had to commandeer a group of around 25 people my age in an art-based capacity, which was very rewarding and produced excellent results.
Tutoring Approach:
I believe with enough enthusiasm and good teaching anyone is capable of anything, and as a tutor I would aim to provide both these things. I do not believe in a harsh approach to teaching as in my experience it only lowers spirits and hinders productivity and creativity. A kind and patient approach is also what comes most naturally to me. I would aim not only to help potential students increase their skills and understanding, but also their enjoyment of the subject, which I think is essential to success. Because I genuinely do enjoy the subjects I am offering to tutor, I would aim to share that enjoyment and thereby increase enthusiasm and skill.
