Patricia - Salford tutor
Information About Patricia:
Personal Description:
I am a graduate in English and Linguistics by the University of Santiago de Compostela in Spain and I am currently living in Manchester pursuing a teaching career while studying part-time towards Masters by research qualification in Applied Linguistics.
I am an enthusiastic person with a real passion for languages and linguistics that is reflected not only in my academic formation but also in my personal interest in foreign languages such as French, German and Japanese. I am always looking for new proffesional and intellectual challenges and goal setting and achieving are a must for me. I genuinely enjoy contact with students and in general with all those who show an interest in a different language and civilisation and who can play an active role in the learning process by making it a complete life-changing experience. I believe in relevant proactive teaching that involves a personal commitment of the learner to master the formal and communicative aspects of the foreign language to the same extent as the cultural.
Teaching Experience:
After finishing my degree in June 2006 I joined the department of Modern Foreign Languages of the University of Wolverhampton to work as an Spanish Language Assistant. My duties were to work independently with groups of students doing Spanish either as part of their degree or as an elective course, as well as to offer one-to-one and group tutorials and to contribute to the design of language learning materials and activities. This was a great opportunity to initiate a career as teacher of Spanish as a foreign language since I was given the chance to work freely developing my own materials, contributing to every course's curriculum by adapting my weekly lessons to the groups' particular needs and interests at the same time that I try to give the students an insight into the sociocultural aspects of Spanish-speaking countries- politics, history, media, culture, etc. For this purpose I truly believe in a communicative student-centred approach to language teaching that involves the use of up-to-date authentic materials adapted to classroom use, implemented with the latest range of audiovisual devices and computing programmes when most suitable.
I also have experience as casual tutor with Berlitz Manchester and as a freelance private tutor.
Tutoring Approach:
I have very vauable experience in one-to-one teaching in higher and adult education and consider myself a friendly approachable tutor who genuinely enjoys taking part in the learning process letting the learner be the protagonist and thus acting only as facilitator and support. I develope taylor-made lessons adapted to the student's needs, level and interests through which I try to enhance their linguistic skills (grammar, written and oral production and comprehension) and encourage their autonomy, working at their own pace and taking into account their individual characteristics and learning styles.
