Claire - Waterloo tutor

Information About Claire:

Personal Description:

I know so many people who struggle with English - whether they're learning to speak it, to read it, to write it, or to enjoy it. I'm lucky enough to be very much in love with the language; my mission as a teacher is to impart that love to my students. It certainly doesn't come easily to everyone, but learning English - at whatever level - should never be a painful process.

As a child, I always had my head in a book, and at GCSE, my exam script obtained one of the top four marks in the country. Now I hold a BA in English from Oxford University, and I've had both my fiction and non-fiction published. When I'm not working on my novel, I'm a freelance editor, translator and tutor.

If English is the number one in my life, French is a close second. I find communicating in another language hugely rewarding, and the French food and lifestyle is certainly a bonus! And when I'm not speaking French or reading a novel? I'll be painting, at the cinema, playing my cello, hill-walking or seeing friends.

Teaching Experience:

My tutoring experience is highly diverse, and I am equipped to help dyslexics and the less literary-minded as well as avid bookworms. I've tutored an incredible variety of people - from disadvantaged New York city kids to gifted 13-year olds sitting their GCSEs two years early.

My most valuable teaching experience, however, has been my extensive work with dyslexic pupils, which has taught me to be extremely sensitive to the ways in which different brains learn. The teaching methods that work for dyslexics can often enhance the learning process for non-dyslexic students, and I've found that the multi-sensory approach I've developed makes learning sessions fun and productive for both teacher and pupil.

Tutoring Approach:

All sessions are of course perfectly tailored to the individual student's needs, whether that involves instruction on essay planning and exam technique, general discussion of a book to spark interest and ideas, or simply help with spelling and grammar . If you are a non-native speaker, I can provide conversation practice with session-specific vocabulary cards provided at the end of the lesson.

Get in touch with a short description of what you're looking for, and we can discuss what approach would work best for you or your child.
