Shane - Peterborough tutor

Information About Shane:

Personal Description:

I am a 25 year old graduate of chemistry from the University of Durham. Having attained the highest overall result in first year, I was awarded the AstraZeneca scholarship. I would like to go on to teach full-time in school so aiming to gain my PGCE next year.

Teaching Experience:

I have 4 years worth of experience not as a school teacher (although I did teach English in Italy for a year on my gap year) but as a private tutor outside and mentor inside schools. In sixth form I decided to set up a voluntary mentoring scheme whereby I tutored higher GCSE mathematics students. My pupils greatly complimented my clear, enthusiastic and enjoyable approach to maths. This sparked a greater passion to teach thereafter, so I decided to tutor in chemistry, physics and maths in schemes through the university such as the Framwellgate Moor project and in my own private time.

Tutoring Approach:

My approach is to first understand the student as an individual. In an informal atmosphere we would simply discuss their working style, attainment aims, how much work they are willing to do etc. Furthermore, I think developing a bond and understanding the student is as key as the clarity of the tutoring, so being a closer age to the students than most tutors helps me to relate to and understand them and their needs, which I think is imperative to my success as a tutor.

As far as tutoring goes, I try to make learning enjoyable, which one would think is difficult with science and maths. Teachers at school find this quite difficult and seem to only do as they're told. Science and maths CAN be enjoyable and as well as the clarity and depth I achieve, engaging the student and their imagination in these subjects is just as important. We would cover the material, and after the session summarise what the student has learnt by bullet-pointing the key ideas. Practice is crucial, so I set carefully selected homework tasks which would be marked and handed back at the next meeting.

Along with the tutoring, having been through the arduous task of university applications, I can help with any of this additionally, helping to use UCAS systems and knowing their operations well. An obvious aid also is helping with preparation for Oxbridge interviews as I have successfully 'endured' one and passed it myself. I look forward to hearing from you soon.
