Richard - Canterbury tutor
Information About Richard:
Personal Description:
Eight years ago I left a dead-end job and embarked on private tutoring while I considered what to do next. I found myself tutoring the 11-year-old son of some friends, who needed help with reading and writing. The first thing I realised from my earlier teaching experience was that he was probably a dyslexic thinker. The second thing I realised was that nothing I was doing was helping him in the slightest.
I went looking for tools and came across Ronald Davis's book, "The Gift of Dyslexia". I tried some of the techniques described, saw immediate results and decided to train in the Davis methods professionally.
Life since then has become a roller-coaster. On a personal level, I have moved from being a fearful "plodder" with limited beliefs about himself to the Director of two learning companies with a passion for personal growth and empowerment.
I also have a keen interest in holistic health and nutrition, and am married with three sons.
Teaching Experience:
Assistant Housemaster and Head of German, Benenden School, Kent (1993 - 1998)
Director, Dyslexia Kent (formerly Centre for Natural Health and Learning), 2002 - 2007
Director, Davis Learning Foundation, 2003 - present
Director, The Learning People, 2007 - present
Tutoring Approach:
I form part of The Learning People, a community of learning specialists providing intensive one-to-one tutoring for children and adults with dyslexia, dyscalculia ("maths dyslexia"), dyspraxia and ADD. I can also help to unlock ability in modern languages and reading music.
We use the Davis methods - an approach based on the philosophy that dyslexia is rooted in talent rather than disability. While many approaches to dyslexia are remedial and drill-based, ours is explorative, finding new ways for an individual to master academic skill that work in harmony with his or her natural intelligence.
A typical programme is delivered in a 30 hour intensive block, with six additional hours available for follow-up sessions. Programme time is priced at 55 per hour, with credit finance options starting at 47 per month.
You are welcome to contact me for a free initial telephone consultation. I am only taking a limited number of new clients now, but will fit you in if I can.
