Alice - Shepherd's Bush tutor

Information About Alice:

Personal Description:

I graduated from the University of Bath in 2004 with an MBiol (combined BSc and MSc) in Molecular and Cellular Biology, for which I obtained first class honours. Since then I have been working in a biochemical research laboratory at Harvard Medical School and have obtained several publications. I have recently started an MSc in Genetic Counselling at Manchester University, but will be living in London most of the week, and therefore available for tutoring most week nights and also on weekends. I will also be available for tutoring during the daytime in school holidays.
I have a mainly biological background, however I also did Chemistry and Maths to A-Level (and obtained A grades for both of these) and I took some Chemistry classes for my undergraduate degree.
I am responsible and reliable and have good communication skills.

Teaching Experience:

I started tutoring last year and since then have worked with 14 students ranging from 10 to 16 years old. The subjects I have had taught include Chemistry, Biology, Physics and Maths. I have worked with students both on a regular basis to help them as they progress through their year, and on a more short term, intensive level in order to help prepare them for exams. I also worked for 3 months as a volunteer in a school for children with special needs.

Tutoring Approach:

I feel that one of the most important things is to make the subject exciting and interesting for the student, as this will make them much more receptive to teaching and will make it easier for them to learn, understand and remember the concepts. I also think that the approach taken to teaching will vary depending on the personality and abilities of each student, for example problem solving examples may work better for some students, whereas a more theory based lesson will work better for others. I think it is important for the student to have consistency in their tutoring, and I will be available over the next 2 years and therefore will be able to take on long term students.
