Personal Description:
* Only one space left, Monday 3:55 - 4:55 *
I love maths and love to help young people gain confidence in themselves. I am a patient, friendly person, easy to get on with and enjoy working with people on a one-to-one basis, something which can be difficult to provide in a classroom setting.
I find tutoring a very satisfying experience and thoroughly enjoy helping people to improve their maths and achieve their goals.
Teaching Experience:
I started tutoring maths at the beginning of University for a friend's little brother and have had numerous students since, ranging from Primary, right through Secondary and University level, and even adults returning to education.
I have had at least one student a year since I started university in 2000. In 2007 I decided to go one step further and became self employed providing maths tuition. I have the most experience with students studying for their National 5, Higher and Advanced Higher exams but have experience at other levels as well, if you would like to know more then please send me a message, I would love to hear from you.
Recently I have completed a level 3 award in tutor training via Myelin Academia, which has given me fresh insight into ways to help my students develop their skills and confidence.
Tutoring Approach:
I like to start by getting to know my students, taking a bit of time to work out what topics have been covered and where there are particular issues. In a typical lesson we will have starter questions looking at the basics of topics already covered, go through textbook and exam style questions, work through examples and talk about layout and how to tackle questions. I will normally set homework to help me to access where there may be problems and we will go through the solutions in detail.
I begin fairly early on to help the student with exam techniques to ensure they are confident with how questions will be phrased and the exam terminology. It is also important to help the student improve their self-confidence as this seems to be one of the biggest barriers for pupils sitting exams.
However each student is unique and their personal learning style different, so I am flexible and will adapt my approach to meet the students needs.
I am very friendly and find that most students get on well with me which is really important in building up trust and allows the student to feel comfortable to ask questions and have a go!
COVID 19
As we begin to go back to something like normal I will be tutoring from my office at home, where I will have hand sanitiser, windows open, 1m distancing, separate toilet for students, cleaning between students and am happy to wear a face mask. If we face greater restrictions or need to self isolate then I have resources in place to move to online tuition (although not normally my preferred option).
