Rafael - Golders Green tutor
Information About Rafael:
Personal Description:
During the past 3 years I have taught both music and music technology at secondary school level, from year seven up to Advanced level. I have learned to adapt myself to the different abilities of the students, differentiating, assimilating, and adapting units of work and lesson plans that allow them to progress in accordance with the new trends of the National Curriculum. I consider the key activities in lesson plans to be composing and performing in groups. Indeed, recording and listening activities are key factors for assessing pupil's progress formatively and, what I believe is more important, for peer and self assessment. In relation with assessment I believe it is fundamental to explain and share the National Curriculum with my pupils. They should understand what it means, its implication in their educational development, how to progress within those levels and aim higher.
I have had the opportunity to develop my ICT skills and my knowledge of music technology, using ProTools, Logic Pro and Sibelius. I have also taught ICT to year 7 and citizenship to year 9 during my PGCE year. Personally, I listen to many different kinds of music, from classical music to the fusion Indian-Jazz music group "Shakti" and I believe that it is the role of the music teacher to give the students the opportunity to open up to different influences. This is of particular importance when working with students from such a diverse range backgrounds; as is the case in comprehensive schools in London. For this reason the composing and performing activities are crucial for sharing ideas, while listening activities help to improve and promote peer and self-assessment among pupils.
During my previous teaching post at St. Luke's Sixth Form College I led the music department. My duties included:
Good organizational skills and record keeping of student's progress and attendance.
Writing department schemes of work and lesson plans
Composing the student handbook and coursework deadline handbook
Creating department budget
Devising a proposal and developing a new state-of the-art recording studio in accordance to a given budget.
Organising extra-curricular activities (Choir, Trips, Charity Concerts, Courses for students)
The role of academic tutor
Last year I taught violin at Bexley Academy and very much enjoy teaching on a one to one basis. I would happily continue some peripatetic violin teaching in combination with extra curricular activities. Finally, I have a wide experience of performing.
