Jasper - Muswell Hill tutor

Information About Jasper:

Personal Description:

I am a current research student of philosophy at Birkbeck College, the University of London. This is my fifth year studying philosophy at an academic level. I earned my undergraduate degree (in philosophy) from the University of Leeds, and will begin a PhD program at the University of British Columbia later this year.
I have been involved in numerous societies and departmental events during my university education; in particular, I have been involved with a number of discussion groups concerned with the philosophy of education, and with programs aimed at engaging the wider public with academic subjects.

Teaching Experience:

Teaching assistant for the department of philosophy at Birkbeck College, where I tutored diverse groups of students in seminars, assessed written work, and provided extensive feedback and support across a range of core philosophical topics.
Personal tutor to Masters and A level students of philosophy, and to A level English literature students, where I planned and provided structured lessons to support the students' syllabus.
Founder and convener of metaphysics workshops for undergraduate students at the University of Leeds.
English language tutor at foreign-exchange summer camps, where I planned and provided thematic workshops directed at increasing the attendees vocabulary and confidence to speak.

Tutoring Approach:

When I first meet with new students, the first task is to talk with them about what they think their own strengths and weaknesses are regarding the subject, and for us to plan out a course of study together.
For undergraduate and graduate students, tutorials are typically directed towards the student gaining a deeper understanding of the workings of a particular topic, problem, debate, or interpretation. As such, the tutorials are centered upon dialogue, with the aim being to go beyond just the required course readings. I typically assign the student I short piece of written work which we discuss at the beginning of the session and where I provide any needed corrections, and then proceed to discuss in greater depth the issues at play. The goal, ultimately, is for the student to not just be able to critique a topic from many angles, but to be able to say which angle they believe to be the best, and why they believe it to be so.
For A level students and below, tutorials still focus very much on the exploration of topics through dialogue, but the format is much more formalised, and structured to suit the syllabus. I try to always give study-skill advice along the way.
For adult learners, tutorial sessions are much more open and conversational. Written work and suggested reading is given and, when necessary, I will 'lecture' for a short while on a new topic first encountered.
