Jen's Tutor Profile
Information About Jen:
Personal Description:
I am a PhD student studying at the University of Bristol, my general areas of research including psychology, neuroscience and linguistics. I studied a Masters degree in clinical neuropsychology (Distinction) and an undergraduate degree in Psychology (First Class Hons); prior to this I studied a full A-Level in Psychology.
I have advanced knowledge of psychological theories and neurology, statistical analysis, and communicating in the sciences (i.e. report-writing), as well as writing skills, reading in psychology, and exam preparation. I am happy to tutor for A-Level, BSc and MSc level.
I have been privately tutoring for two years.
Teaching Experience:
Alongside my PhD at UoB I have been, and continue to be, a teaching assistant for both Introduction to Psychological Experiments and Advanced statistics & Psychological Experiments - at both first and second year level of the undergraduate Psychology BSc degree. This includes working with students in-class, marking assignments and guidance for dissemination of their work through presentation (poster or Powerpoint).
I have experience of one-to-one tuition on statistics for the sciences, taught topics at BSc level, juggling workloads and planning for exams - and am familiar with working with both single and joint honours students.
Tutoring Approach:
My main contribution as a tutor covers understanding of taught components of your course and developing your writing (for essays or exams). Typically I suggest a timetable including any deadlines within which we plan a schedule of appointments that can vary in length up to two hours.
My approach is centred around the tutees core goals and typically involves working closely with materials provided by the institution. Developing mock exams for work covered and creating centralised sources for the information required for passing exams. I'm a big fan of mnemonics and strategic learning per individual - what works for you is best and I develop that with some tips of my own.
Psychology as a topic has fairly strict rules about writing and structure when producing work. I am extremely knowledgeable about APA formatting (an essential part of working at an undergraduate level at most universities, Bristol is no exception), and have a great deal of skill when it comes to writing concisely. I can help students refine their writing skills for empirical work which they may be unused to.
While I have not yet had the experience of tutoring at A-Level I consider my understanding of Psychology to put me in good stead for tutoring at this level also. I would be happy to review the current curriculum as part of the tutoring programme, and have a great deal of experience with outreach and public engagement for people at this age and level of education.
