Femke - Holborn tutor
Information About Femke:
Personal Description:
I began tutoring during my Philosophy of Science MSc at the London School of Economics. Subsequently I decided to pursue a career in science and began to train as a geologist at Birkbeck College, University of London in a 4-year degree program while continuing to work as a tutor. Over the course of the last 3 years my teaching career gained momentum and I made the decision to pause my second degree to focus on teaching.
Teaching Experience:
Since graduating I have gained thousands of hours of tutoring experience over a period of 4 years. While I specialise in teaching maths at 11+, 13+ and GCSE level, I also have a wealth of experience in teaching sciences (13+, GCSE), maths (A-level), English (11+, 13+, GCSE, A-level) and philosophy (A-level and degree level). Alongside my independent work I am a senior tutor at three high end London tuition agencies.*
I have successfully prepared students for entry into a wide range of schools including Bancroft, Channing, City of London, Eton, Forest, Francis Holland, Godolphin and Latymer School, Haberdashers', Highgate, North London Collegiate School, Queen's College, Sevenoaks, South Hampstead, St. Paul's and UCS.
I have worked as an assessor for a London tuition agency since 2010. I conduct assessments which potential tutors must pass before they are allowed to work for the agency. Assessing other tutors has given me excellent insights as to how to improve my own teaching.
*I am not permitted to name these here, but I can provide references once contact details are exchanged.
Tutoring Approach:
The key to my approach is keeping the student's mind as active as possible. My lessons are extremely questions-based and seek to guide a student to explore concepts rather than merely deposit information. Since this approach requires more engagement from the pupil, the material is better retained and more thoroughly understood.
I find the science of memory fascinating and have carefully researched and tested various memory techniques that I now find invaluable during my lessons. The luxury of one-to-one tuition is that each lesson can be perfectly tailored to the individual student. Over the first few sessions, I determine how the pupil best absorbs information and what teaching style they find the most engaging. The result is highly efficient learning which generally manages to be good fun as well.
Outside of classes I am happy to answer emailed questions and to mark small amounts of homework free of charge. Detailed proof reading and feedback for coursework assignments for those I do not regularly teach is charged at my hourly rate. Group sessions are available the charge is 50% of the normal fee for each additional student.
