Personal Description:
Hello, I am in my forties and I live in Worthing. I specialise in teaching English as a foreign language. I welcome teaching both individuals and small groups with everyday, educational or business English.

I enjoy travelling, meeting new people and learning about other countries. I have just returned from teaching English in Japan for four years, which I loved.

I also have experience working in both education and business in the UK. I was a primary school teacher for eight years and worked in insurance for 11 years.

Teaching Experience:

-I taught Keys Stage 1 and 2 for eight years in an East London primary school. The majority of which did not speak English regularly at home.
-I carried out training on technical insurance issues as part of my job with the insurance company.
-I taught English in two of Japan's well known English conversation schools (ECC and AEON). I worked with students ages ranging from 18 months to 70+ at all levels from beginner to advanced. I also did some work in a few Japanese kindergartens and some summer relief work in a local Worthing language school (CES).

Tutoring Approach:

I like lessons to be fun and the students to feel relaxed. The needs of the students comes first as everyone is different.

After an initial assessment ,I agree with the tutee a lesson progress plan. The lessons will have a clear goal and will relate to real life wherever possible.

Please note that all lessons with children should be at their home with a responsible adult present or available.

Personal Description:
I want everyone to enjoy the ability to communicate with each other in English to make friends, do business together and to feel confident wherever English is spoken.
I have been made welcome by so many people from many nationalities all round the world and love the excitement of communicating with people from all walks of life.
I enjoy teaching face to face and online and to tailoring conversation and lessons to the ability and objectives of the student or students.
I am married with a family and am comfortable teaching all ages although I prefer teaching adults and young adults (16 upwards). I teach general English and specialize in teaching business English.
I also proofread and edit dissertations and theses.

Teaching Experience:

I have taught in Europe and Asia. For six years I lived in France teaching one to one and small groups. I returned to the United Kingdom in 2012 and live and teach in the Worthing and Brighton area.

Tutoring Approach:

Learning a language should be both fun and serious. If my students are preparing for examinations then a concentration on course work with homework will be important.
If students prefer to develop their social conversational ability then there may be less emphasis on grammar and more on the use of English in everyday social or business situations. Each potential student is asked to complete a simple questionaire to give me a picture of their ability level and what they want to achieve.
I teach one to one or small groups (normally no more than 8 students). Price reductions for two students or more
Most online teaching is on a one to one basis.

Personal Description:
Hi! My name's Ed. I read Classics at Cambridge before going on to train at the Bristol Old Vic. I'm now working as a professional actor in London.

I tutor in English, and all areas of Latin and Ancient Greek. If it's of interest, I particularly specialized in my finals papers on Homer, Virgil, Horace, and the evolution of tragedy.

Though I read Classics, a large chunk of my finals actually ended up being part of the English course - specifically tracing the origins of tragedy through to the present day. As an actor, too, I'm continually having to familiarize myself with new areas of literature, be it poetry, drama, or prose, with the advantage, I hope, of an extremely practical approach.

Teaching Experience:

Overall, I've found it best to keep a balance between tutoring English and Classics. I like to be teaching a range of things.

When moving to Bristol I was lucky enough to be offered a part-time teaching post with the Classics department at Clifton College. Over the two years I primarily taught A level language work in Greek and Latin, as well as coaching their prospective candidates for Oxford and Cambridge.

I've also done a lot of free-lancing in all sorts of areas for both English and Classics, tutoring Oxbridge applicants as well as students at both school and university level.

The work I've done with my tutees has varied widely. In Latin and Greek, I've assisted some specifically in translating set texts both at school and university level (I'm now very familiar with the OCR Latin syllabus); I've introduced others, who wished to explore beyond their prescribed syllabus, to new areas of literature; and with others I've worked on more wide-ranging ways to deepen literary analysis or approach translation.

I should probably add that my language work with school students has almost exclusively involved tackling the inadequacies of the confounded Cambridge Latin Course! This seems to be taught in virtually every school but seemingly never elects to teach grammar, which I find utterly bizarre. If you're a victim of this clueless course I'm more than happy to help!

In terms of English tuition, I've been fortunate enough to have a similarly broad range of tutees, at GCSE, A level, and university standard, though a high proportion have been Oxbridge candidates.

Some references from previous tutees below:

Naomi, A Level Latin and Greek (2013)

Ed,

Sorry it's so early but I just thought I'd let you know I got my Cambridge grades! Thank you so much for everything once again!

Neirin, Latin GCSE (2013)

Hello Ed. We are so delighted with Neirin's results, absolutely fabulous. And who would have thought - an A star in Latin! Thank you for all your effort and encouragement. He couldn't have done it without you. Enjoy the rest of the summer and good luck with the writing.

Katie, Oxbridge Ancient Greek (2013)

Ed's work with Katie has been completely outstanding. I think we were asking for something quite demanding, a combination of literature and language, with inspiration to boot, and he delivered it superbly. Katie was super-enthused by his approach. I think they both thoroughly enjoyed the classes (indeed from the sound of it I would have enjoyed them myself!) Ed has a combination of intellect, passion and (as far as I can judge) a real feel for the texts!

Zac, Scholarship Latin (2014)

Ed has been tutoring our 11 year old for Latin scholarship papers. In 5 sessions he has taken him to a new level and has totally inspired him! We can't recommend him highly enough!...

Hiya Ed,

Thanks for the email ... got an A* in Philosophy and A's in Latin and English.

Thank you very much for all your help, couldn't have got the A without your tutoring.

Hope all goes well for you at theatre school and you're enjoying the summer.

Best wishes,

Sophie.

You're also welcome to get in touch with the Head of Classics at Clifton College, Mr Huntington, who employed me at the school between 2009 and 2011.

Tutoring Approach:

I think it's impossible to pin down a sure-fire method of effective tutoring for any given person. People are different, and different methods work with different people.

That said, I am a firm believer that you cannot simply speak at someone. Learning has to be an active process, and I think there has to be involvement from both sides for things to sink in. In this light, I do try to make things enjoyable, and also to limit shortcuts; I'm of the view that it's far better to invest the time in getting firmly to grips with a subject, be it an instance of grammar or literary concept. In the long run that is a shortcut in itself.

Personal Description:
I am very flexible and am able to tutor students in the evenings and on weekends. I am home-based so students can visit me or take lessons through SKYPE. This flexibility suits busy students and those with other commitments who are often unable to stick to a strict regime. I have a PgDip in TESOL and am constantly looking to invent interesting new ways to teach and encourage my students.

Teaching Experience:

I have been an English language teacher for over 14 years and have worked in Greece, Japan and Indonesia as well as in the UK.

I lecture part time in higher education institutions and have worked as Assistant Director of Studies/Academic Manager of a college in Edinburgh where I ran a busy summer school.

I have helped countless students achieve and often exceed their expectations in exam classes including IELTS and TOEFL.

Tutoring Approach:

I teach on a student-centred basis and during the first meeting we will work together to create a detailed plan covering all your needs for the agreed number of lessons.

Every lesson will centre on a specific grammar point and vocabulary theme with lots of conversation and student input. My students definitely do most of the talking!

I will assess progress regularly through tests and coursework and adapt the lesson plans as appropriate.

I am a Graduate in Engineering with excellent academic background. Recently I have completed masters in Structural Engineering with distinction. I have sound communication skills and have ability to deliver my concepts at any level.

Teaching Experience:

I have been teaching Maths, Physics, Chemistry, Rate analysis and Structural Engineering to B-tech students. Currently I am teaching Maths, Physics and Chemistry to the G.C.S.E Students.

Tutoring Approach:

Teaching is the mother of all professions and it is one of the most respectable profession. To have a complete conceptual knowledge about something and to have an ability to deliver that knowledge both are totally different things. Most people have outstanding knowledge but they are unable to deliver that knowledge effectively. So my approach to tutoring is to deliver my concepts effectively and to teach at all levels.

Personal Description:
I am a Music graduate hoping be a primary or secondary school teacher. Teaching is a passion of mine and and hope to gain and learn as much experience as possible within this sector. I am friendly, with excellent communication skills. When working with pupils, i always want them to succeed and get the grades they need through motivation, encouragement and making them feel they are able to ask questions at any point. The most rewarding part of tutoring is knowing that pupils are achieving good grades and they feel confident enough in school to do the tasks in class.

Teaching Experience:

I currently work at a secondary school as a Learning Support Assistant and help pupils with their school work and homework. I have supported pupils in many different subjects from Maths, English, Science to Art and Drama. I have developed different ways of teaching through one to one lessons which i currently do at the school with a pupil and have been doing this since February 2012. I have worked previously in a Primary School as a voluntary teaching assistant.

Tutoring Approach:

I feel its important to look at what pupils are currently working on in school which can also include homework they are struggling with and help them with that. I create a friendly environment where they are comfortable enough to ask questions and able to tell me when they still don't understand.

Personal Description:
I am currently a 2nd year undergraduate studying Electrical and Electronics Engineering at Imperial College London. I was selected to attend the Google Top Black Talent Programme, recognising the best talents in the UK at the moment. I am a very sociable and creative person, which is why I currently hold the position of Creative Director of the Afro-Caribbean society at Imperial, one of Imperial's largest cultural societies.

Teaching Experience:

I have taught computer literacy to individuals from disadvantaged communities in South Africa.

Tutoring Approach:

Teaching is simple. Kids will never learn unless they want to. I intend to present my teaching in a way that is creative and interesting to the student, so as to make the best of each session. The best teachers do not just teach. They engage. It is paramount you are able to capture the interest of your student, something I am more than capable of.

Personal Description:
Hi,
My name is Andrew, I am in my early 50's and taught in private schools for 15 years. I then left education for change of lifestyle and other personal reasons. I have been married for over 25 years and have 2 daughters 24 and 22. I am a committed christian and as such the integrity of the teacher student relationship is very important to me; I would always go the extra mile to see that the student achieves their aims.

I have a current DBS. Loads of references available from Senior teachers and Deputy Headmasters past and present. (Present Headmasters are not the Heads for which I worked).

Teaching Experience:

Repton Prep School 1992 - 2006, Maths, ICT to year 8. Head of ICT.

Manor House School 2006-2007, Maths and ICT to GCSE. Head of ICT.

Private tutor, 3 years, A level (not statistics - sorry), GCSE and Y6 SAT's, Entrance Exams.

I have also coached football, hockey and cricket so I have a solid foundation in motivating students.

Tutoring Approach:

Motivational, inspirational, encouraging. All things are possible with a good attitude. A can do approach. I do NOT subscribe to the "we don't do it like that mentality" , if there is a better way of doing something then I'm positive about new methods.
For example, when my daughters were learning their tables I wrote my own simple spreadsheet to enable tables practice on a table by table random basis. This is a completely unashamedly a drill system that produces results. Easily possible to learn all tables to 12 within a month if sufficient time is invested, it is also an enjoyable process that 99% of the children that I taught enjoyed, I used the spreadsheet extensively in the schools at which I taught. Infinitely extendable for the brightest to 13, 14, 15 20x tables; likewise can be simplified to 2x and 3x for those that need more time. Also programmable to practise number bonds with any number of digits.

I have also developed the spreadsheet to enable learning of vocabulaire francais.

Personal Description:
I am a friendly tutor who wants to share my knowledge and experience to everyone who wants to learn. Currently, I am in my second year of studying Maths at Trinity College Cambridge. Having just gone through A-Levels myself, I am well aware of the current syllabus and current tricks and tips to clearing the exams. I cleared my exams with the highest marks and managed to achieve perfect ums score in A-Level Maths. Hence, I am well aware of what examiners are looking for.

I am friendly, approachable and hope that my sessions will be very enjoyable. I will also make sure that you are being taught exactly what you want how you want it. Notes are also available.

Teaching Experience:

I have 1 year tutoring experience in Maths. I used to tutor maths in school for free at GCSE and As level. I also used to teach Physics to GCSE and As students.

I also have lots of volunteering experience in teaching other things such as piano and guitar.

Tutoring Approach:

I feel that tuition should be moulded to suit the person. Hence, I normally ask the students about what they want to discuss before the lesson. I also provide concise notes and worked examples which I can e-mail to students. They can then follow these notes and try to understand the content as I teach it to them. I also provide mock exams at the end of the sessions when the students feel that they are comfortable with the content they have learnt.

I put emphasis on understanding the principles behind the subject and not just on rote memorising in order to pass exams.

Personal Description:
I am a teacher of science and chemistry. I have been a teacher since 2003 and I have taught all the exam syllabus, even with the most recent changes. I have tutored successfully for the past three year and I have been an exam marker for the past 5 year and still do mark now. I have a good idea of exactly what is required for the exam boards and I cater for all styles of learning.

I provide all resources and travel costs are included in my hourly fee. The reason for the increased charge for a level is the extra time it takes to prepare and also more printing and resources are usually required.

I have a Dbs from Nov 2015 and can provide tutoring references on request.

Teaching Experience:

Teaching 2003 to present
Tutoring from 2010 to present
exam marking 2008 to present
University tutor 2015 to present

Tutoring Approach:

varied depending on the needs of the tutee. I find that learning and practicing in the session works well. I will then leave similar questions for the tutee to complete before the next session. this helps me see if the student is making progress in the sessions and they can see the progress themselves. Other styles that work are going through exam questions, identifying key points and using revision techniques that can be taught in the sessions.

I do believe that tutoring is not a substitute for revision but in addition and it is important that tutees are committed to revision if they wish tutoring to be sucessful.

I would like to point out that I cannot garentee any grade but will always go above and beyond to help students achieve their best.
