Tutoring Approach:

I specialise in working with under confident pupils who need to 'home in' on their skills to get a better grade and with those who need to understand a particular area of their studies to improve their grade.
My style is to find out, with the learner, what needs to be worked on and focus on that, in a relaxed but achievement enhancing style. This has produced very positive results.

Personal Description:
Hello there,
I am a native English speaker, and I have recently graduated with a First Class Honours in English from a top Russell Group University, which boasts an Internationally recognised English faculty, which means I had the opportunity to benefit from the teachings of influential scholars from the literary world. Students will benefit from my experiences, and I aim to offer an innovative and exciting take on English Literature and Language to ensure that they both achieve and exceed their potential. I am in the process of establishing my own tutoring business, as well as paving out a career path as a freelance writer.

Teaching Experience:

I am a professional English tutor, and have worked with students of all abilities from Secondary School right up until University for over 4 years now. I have spent 4 years tutoring privately in 1-1 and group sessions, as well as online. I have spent 2 years working in a supplementary school, where I worked with large groups of students from 11-19 years old of mixed abilities. I planned my lessons judiciously, set and marked homework, and prepared my GCSE classes for their exams. I have moved students from C grades, to A/B and even A* grades. My experience means that I am familiar with the current GCSE/A Level curriculum. I have also taught students English from all over the globe, not just academically, but also in terms of spoken English. I have much experience proof-reading and editing top University level essays written by students who attend the country's top Academic Institutions. In addition to this, I have accumulated over 250 hours of Skype and Online Tutoring using interactive educational software such as VLE/Blackboard, Moodle and WizIQ. Using these software, I have accumulated over 150 hours of teaching English as a Foreign Language to young learners and adults across the globe, including India, the UAE and Japan, with particular interest in business and interview skills for those wishing to work overseas in predominantly English speaking countries, conversational practices as well as for academic purposes.

I am also a freelance editor and proofreader, and have worked with students from top academic universities to assist them with their essays and dissertations. I have worked with students across a range of disciplines, including Psychology, Sociology, Early Learning Years and Childcare, Criminology and History.

Tutoring Approach:

As a tutor, regardless of whether I am teaching at GCSE, A-Level or University level, or English as a foreign language, I aim to encourage my students to identify with the subjects, to understand the content and what is expected of them by their examiners, but, most importantly, to enjoy them. It would be unwise for me to say that I have a standard tutoring approach for all my students. Instead, I work closely with my tutees, and use my extensive experience to gauge what grades they are working at, pinpointing the areas we need to work on, and then tailoring my lessons to suit their academic and personal educational needs. I can guarantee that regardless of their abilities and potentials, all my students unquestionably thrive and make excellent progress throughout our sessions together.

Personal Description:
I am a Native Spanish tutor (from Galicia, North-West of Spain) and this is my second year working as a freelance tutor in London, where I am also studying for my PhD (Comparative Literature). I enjoy films, football and music and I would be glad to use these topics in class if you share any of these interests.

Teaching Experience:

I have had experiences teaching at almost any level, from nursery toddlers to 73 years old ladies. I have worked with small groups at the University of Liverpool as a Native Spanish Speaking Tutor (2008-2009) and as an English teacher with big classrooms of up to 30 students at a secondary education school in Spain (2009-2010). In London I am working a lot with adult learners who have an interest in learning, improving or keeping fluent in Spanish for conversation, holidays or even looking forward to moving to Spanish-speaking countries. I have also been successful helping a couple of A-Level students get their best results. At the moment I am working part time as a Spanish teaching assistant at brentsido Highschool, on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, providing conversation practice sessions and A Lavel training to small groups.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe I am absolutely flexible and I always try to provide the best strategy for getting the best results. Every student is a different world. For adult learners, which is probably the sector I am most often working with, I usually draw conclusions from a first class where a bit of every skill is tried and interests and objectives are discussed. For absolute beginners who want to build solid foundations, I recommend using a textbook (or handouts I prepare) with some other extra activities I provide. For advanced learners I usually bring real-life texts (from newspapers, ads, literature, etc) and in class we discuss both grammar aspects (with a selection of exercises) and whatever topics are brought up by the texts, in conversation. I am also open to specific outlines the student may want to follow.

I am a senior epidemiologist within a healthcare organisation and I have studied biology, biochemistry, immunology, microbiology, parasitology and epidemiology at both under-graduate and post-graduate level. I also have a Master's in Public Health. I am interestested primarily in human disease and work on vaccine-preventable diseases, infection and associated Human Papillomavirus-driven cancers. I have taught and lectured to 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th year undergraduates and to Master's students. I am fairly strict with regards to attention to detail and I believe that it is important to write accurately and in a concise but salient fashion. I am able to read, write and speak fluent French. I love mountaineering and ultra-marathons.

Teaching Experience:

I have been a STEM ambassador for West of Scotland for the last 3 years, teaching biology and basic molecular biology, microbiology and immunology to primary and secondary school children.

Lecturing duties at Strathclyde, Edinburgh and Glasgow University on molecular biology/microbiology/immunology in context of public health.

Module Leader for Outbreak Management and Epidemiology modules for M.Sc. in Infection Control, University of Highlands & Islands

Tutoring Approach:

Relaxed - it is crucial to see how the student thinks and take it from there. Everybody is different and in order to understand where the difficulties may lie, one must take the time to appraise how the student is thinking and which areas are causing the most problems. Using a number of examples, it can often be revealing to the student when one thinks of a scenario in a different way. However, it is imperative that the student appreciates that the attainment of knowledge and the ability to reason and apply that knowledge comes from drive, enthusiasm and structured revision. After tutoring, I normally arrange for students to meet with my contacts in the field of biology and public health so that they may gain some extra practical experience and/or some work experience before their next career step. I have also tutored students who are at various points on the autism spectrum.

Personal Description:
I'm a well spoken and friendly "science geek" with great interpersonal skills. I pride myself on a relaxed and logical approach to problem solving; whether it be at a post-graduate level or the ability to communicate GCSE and A-Level topics in a relevant manor. Throughout my schooling I saw many classmates struggle with topics because they were unable to make a connection to their interests. Personal tutoring allows the tutee to have access to the information in a tailored manor such that they are able to relate the the problem and make clear logical choices about how to proceed.

I graduated with an MSci in Chemistry from the University of Nottingham last year and I'm currently in my 1st year of a 4 year PhD, also Chemistry. Throughout my course I did extra maths and physics modules and my research currently also depends heavily on all the sciences and maths. For those interested in Uni-level tutoring within Chemistry; my PhD involves a lot of vibrational spectroscopy (inorganic section), and I regularly use all the physics, maths and inorganic chemistry taught at undergrad level.

Teaching Experience:

Tutoring:
I have tutored multiple students in the past, providing entire revision/improvement courses for both GCSE and A-level students as well as help a variety of university students achieving high grades on specific modules.

The tailored approach of private tuition allows students to quickly build confidence in a subject (and exam technique) which results in achieving grades that each student is capable of. I've also offered subject specific tutoring, such as "Quantitive Analysis for Business", a statistical module for Business Management students.

University:
Demonstrating: I help undergrad students understand and complete practical experiments several times a week.
A-Level Outreach/UCAS: I participate in numerous UCAS events to help potential students and parents understand what Chemistry at Nottingham Uni has to offer.

Outdoor Education:
Last summer I lived in a forest for 3 months and each week had a different group of 12-16 year olds to look after and teach them how to survive in the wild. Catching and cooking our food, building shelters to sleep in and different ways to make fire were just some of the topics covered.

Tutoring Approach:

An essential part of great exam grades is an understanding of not only the subject area, but an understanding of the underlying question. Tailoring a teaching style to every student is essential, especially when it comes to science and maths. Although it's possible to pass exams with a "copy and paste" approach, developing an understanding of the subject area will yield much better grades and almost certainly reducing the amount of stress associated with exams.

Any questions please drop me a message!
