Personal Description:
Ola! Tudo bem?

I am Alexsandra, I am a native Brazilian Portuguese speaker, a fully qualified and certified language teacher who has been teaching Brazilian Portuguese for more than 15 years.

I really LOVE what I do.

Over the years I have met many children, usually born to mixed parents or outside Brazil, who unfortunately cannot speak Portuguese.

I have also met adults, who regret not to have learned Portuguese from their parents when they were a child.

Some parents also regret not to have taught Portuguese to their children for whatever reason when they had the chance to do it.

Then I decided to help Brazilian parents teach Portuguese to their children while they are still young. Children can learn a language very easily if they are exposed to it, but they still need your help, especially if you live abroad.

Whenever I go to Brazil on holiday, I always buy books, CDs and DVDs for children so my students can increase their knowledge of Portuguese and also learn more about the Brazilian culture through stories, songs and movies.

Speaking to your child only in Portuguese (your native language) is a great gift and an asset you can give to your child.

I have a degree in Portuguese and English Language and Literature and used to teach Portuguese and English in Brazil until I moved to the UK in 2013. Since then, I have been teaching Brazilian Portuguese ( private lessons ). Teaching is my passion and I always try to present the language in a fun and effective way making use of a wide range of resources, especially songs, to enhance the learning process.
I hold formal qualifications to teach Portuguese and I have experience in teaching Portuguese as a foreign language. My personal qualities as a language tutor are:

I have taught students of all ages and abilities and I am really passionate about teaching languages. It is a real pleasure for me to see the development of my students` language skills.

Tutoring Approach:

I offer face to face Portuguese Language lessons. My courses are tailored to individual needs.

My Portuguese lessons emphasize both the culture and the literature of Brazil, and include classes on popular culture, music & cinema. My personal language lab has a varied collection of both Brazilian films as well as music. I also offer options for a "Tarde no Cinema", where students can get together and watch Brazilian films.

Each student has a different way of learning or wants to learn the language for a specific purpose, so it's really important that you let me know why do you want to learn Portuguese, if you speak any other foreign language, if you want to focus on writing, speaking, understanding or all three, if you have a deadline to be fluent in Portuguese, how many lessons per week are you willing to take.

If you are beginning to learn Portuguese or if you already have an intermediate or advanced level, I'll be happy to help you out with whatever you need. I can explain grammatical points, practice vocabulary and most importantly help you develop your oral proficiency.

I have a wide variety of teaching resources and I try to make my lessons as engaging and motivating as possible.

I am a former Head of English and Assistant Headteacher in a local secondary school and have a very strong record of raising pupils' attainment. I have worked with all year groups, 7-13 (age 11-18), and have experience working with pupils with special needs, as well as having done lots of work on stretching more able students. English is my passion and it's one I am enthusiastic to share with others. I graduated from Oxford University in 2005 and am currently Senior Examiner at GCSE for one of the major exam boards, so I know what they really want to see! I am also a 'subject expert' in English at Ofqual. I now oversee the training and work of up to 80 examiners so have very significant experience in this area.

I qualified as a teacher in 2006, having taken my PGCE at Homerton College in Cambridge. Where necessary I focus on exam technique as I find many capable and knowledgeable students gain confidence (and marks!) once these skills are taught.

I am an enthusiastic, energetic teacher with eight years experience teaching and tutoring A-level with a passion for my subject. In my spare time I watch and play football, enjoy reading, hiking and watching films; on the odd occasion I like to go skiing or scuba diving.

I studied A-levels before deciding to go to Durham University to read Chemistry. Once I finished my degree, I trained as a teacher at Manchester University and worked in Manchester for three years before moving down to London for four years. I have been teaching A-level Chemistry for eight years in total and have experience tutoring every exam board including the IB. I am also an OCR Examiner and Reviewer for AS Chemistry Exam Breadth in Chemistry.

In the Summer 2014 exams, I successfully guided the Chemistry department to their first 100% pass rate and a headline figure of 83% A-C in AS Chemistry.
In the Summer 2015 exams, the A-level Chemistry results at Sacred Heart were one of the best with 93% A*-C (64% A*-B).
In the Summer 2016, A-level Chemistry achieved 80% A*-C (65% A*-B) grades.

I left teaching this year to go back to university to read Medicine, however I am still looking to tutor students who require support and advice in Chemistry.

Tutoring Approach:

I am a very calm, patient and relaxed person and this is reflected in my tutoring. Many students can have difficulty with Science (in particular Chemistry) and with a one on one approach can be more motivating than in a classroom environment. I have an excellent knowledge of Science and can communicate this effectively. I will take you as far as you need to go in the subject and will be efficient with your time. Past successes include two students whom increased a grade from a B to A to get onto a Medicine course and also recently a student whom achieved a C at AS level and came out with an A for his full A-level.

I normally tutor by focusing on key concepts and ideas, using past paper questions to highlight what the exam requirements are and help students learn to apply their knowledge. I can also tutor in a less formal way where students can bring particular questions or topics and we can discuss them and look at application and exam style questions.

Teaching Experience:

I have served as an assistant teacher, head of physics, head of science and head of faculty in comprehensive schools where my subjects have included all the sciences, seperate and combined, plus maths up to GCSE and Physics to A-level. I have also been ICT co-ordinator and a tutor for a youth theatre group. I have further middle school experience, extending my teaching at KS2 and 3 to include Design and Technology, Art, English, Humanities and games whilst continuing my initial specialisms, sciences and maths.

I recently decided to make a career change and make teaching English to speakers of other language a professional career. I am CELTA (Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) qualified. I am also two years into BA (hons) English Language and Literature degree and intend to continue my own personal development by studying for an MA English Language Teaching and Linguistics and by completing the DELTA (Diploma in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) as soon as I am eligible.

Teaching Experience:

I have taught to classes of between six and eighteen students whilst training for the CELTA qualification. The students came from a variety of countries including: France, Italy, Turkey, South Korea, Spain, Chile, Colombia, Russia and Poland. Tutoring Approach:

I use a number of different course books for teaching English and try to make the whole experience as relaxed, fun and interactive as possible. I have a BA Honours Degree in English Studies from Aleppo University in Syria in 2000. I embarked on two Postgraduate Diplomas at Aleppo University one in Linguistics (2002); the other in Education and Qualification in 2003. In both of these Diplomas I was awarded a Distinction. In 2002, I was fortunate in gaining a scholarship to study in the UK and was nominated to study in the department of Language and Linguistics at the University of Essex. I found this course to be immensely useful to me as a TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) professional as I was able to observe a range of different EAP (English for Academic Purposes)classrooms; make academic presentations and really developed my love of scholarship which fired me with the enthusiasm to read for a PhD degree. I finished my doctorate in TESOL at the University of Ulster entitled "EAP Teachers Approaches to Giving Written Feedback on Academic Writing in British and Syrian ELT Centres". . I am extremely interested in teaching the language skills (as my recent doctorate shows). I am extremely hard working and sociable. I have good comparative knowledge of Western and Islamic societies which I could share with students where pertinent. I also have two qualifications from Ulster University in Peer Mentoring and Counselling.

I have strong interpersonal, communication, and classroom management skills and self-motivator. In the Diploma of Education and Qualification, I have been trained how to teach and how to deliver lectures in Arabic and English and also how to prepare lesson plan. I have experience of teaching university students in Syria as I was a lecturer at Aleppo University from 2002 to 2013. Tutoring Approach:

It is the application of an integrating approach for the development of communicative skills in the lesson, in which the four skills in the acquisition of knowledge of a foreign language can be taught in a coherent way, and practiced together, with a distinction of the importance of one upon the other. One image for teaching English as a second or foreign language (ESL/EFL) is that of a tapestry. The tapestry is woven from many strands, such as the characteristics of the teacher, the learner, the setting, and the relevant languages (i.e., English and the native languages of the learners and the teacher). For the instructional loom to produce a large, strong, beautiful, colorful tapestry, all of these strands must be interwoven in positive ways. For example, the instructor's teaching style must address the learning style of the learner, the learner must be motivated, and the setting must provide resources and values that strongly support the teaching of the language. However, if the strands are not woven together effectively, the instructional loom is likely to produce something small, weak, ragged, and pale--not recognizable as a tapestry at all.

Personal Description:
I have a BSc degree in Psychology and an additional qualification in TEFL.

I am bilingual (Arabic and English) and enjoy teaching Arabic language.

I have an interest in Arabic culture and have recently written a book of Sudanese Arabic proverbs.

Teaching Experience:

I have over 16 years experience in teaching Arabic as a Foreign Language to children and adults.

Most of my teaching has been at an international primary school but I also enjoy teaching individuals and small groups.

I enjoy the creative aspects of teaching and believe that learning a language should be a fun experience. I have designed several course books for learning Sudanese Arabic.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe that learning Arabic can be reinforced through using visual aids and playing games.

I prefer to teach children and women.

I teach Arabic from a secular viewpoint. I do not have the knowledge to teach religious terminology or extracts from the Quran.

I am an Open University student, studying psychology with counselling.

I have a keen interest in teaching and know how difficult and stressful it can be to get the necessary grades. I also know that younger children often tire of learning things that they don't find interesting and have tutored children successfully by relating their interests to what they are studying. I have experience teaching people with learning difficulties.

Teaching Experience:

EAL mentoring
Experience teaching and tutoring KS1
Workshop for KS2 children on how to build a motor vehicle (design, electronics, aerodynamics, etc.)

Tutoring Approach:

My approach to tutoring will vary depending on the tutee. While I will make lesson plans, they will be more of a guideline than a fixed plan. I am willing to answer any queries that may arise between sessions and can be contacted by email or text.
