Personal Description:
I graduated from Cambridge University with a BA in English Literature, and then from the Guildhall School of Music & Drama, graduating with a BA in acting, where I was the recipient of the Noel Coward Scholarship from 2008-2011. In July 2011 I won the Michael Bryant Award at the National Theatre, for verse speaking and Shakespeare.

When I'm not acting or tutoring I can be found in the kitchen or walking in the countryside.

Teaching Experience:

I have been a private tutor since 2008.

Currently tutoring students in: 8+, 10+ & 11+ preparation (all four subjects); GCSE Maths.

Previously: English - KS1, KS2, 7+ (Successful entry to Highgate), 11+ (Successful entry to Haberdashers' Askes Boys, Trinity, City of London School for Boys, Alleyn's, St Alban's), A Level (A at A Level English and Extended English). Maths - KS1, KS2, 7+, 11+, GCSE (grade improved from D to A*). University application assistance (Successful entry to Durham and Oxford). English as a foreign language.

During my gap year I spent some time as a special needs classroom assistant, working closely with a child suffering with Asperger's Syndrome. This involved facilitating the social and academic change between primary and secondary education on a one-to-one basis.

Also at this time I ran Welsh language games sessions for primary children in non-first-language schools to improve and encourage their use of the language outside of the classroom environment.

Whilst at secondary school I taught reading skills to children who had low reading-ages.

Tutoring Approach:

My approach to tutoring is tailored to the individual's needs; firstly finding ways of fully explaining a concept, then cementing them with useful and memorable material to build students' confidence. My main objective would be to aid the student in understanding not only the specifics of the work but also the broader aspects of it, which I believe provides a truer grounding in - and enjoyment of - a subject. By making the work useful and enjoyable, and by finding alternative and effective approaches to study, I hope that my tuition will shed new light on subjects for students.

I particularly enjoy tutoring Maths GCSE, 11+ and 13+.

Previous Students' Comments:

'Before I met Alex, as a dyslexic, I was academically unconfident and dreaded having tutors who had never really helped me before. Alex tutored me from Year 8 to 11 and she completely changed my attitude to studying, helped me develop my organisational skills and gave me a huge amount of confidence in my abilities. As I approached GCSEs she tutored me particularly in Maths where I was struggling with a D grade. Without her expert tuition I doubt I would have been able to achieve my A* in Maths.

I think Alex is an amazing tutor because she has an extraordinary talent for making it a thoroughly enjoyable experience to the extent I would genuinely look forward to our lessons. Alex was far more than a tutor to me, helping me through such formative teenage years. I consider her a friend.'

- Tally (Now studying for her A Levels)

'Alex is a truly outstanding and gifted tutor as well as a fantastic person. I have very much enjoyed being her student for over six months, and have not only learnt a lot due to her expertise and impressive knowledge but also grew to love English Literature because of the inspirational nature of her tutoring. Previously, I used to constantly struggle with my assignments since English is not my first language, however, after a few weeks of sessions with Alex my grades and confidence significantly improved. She has an ability to keep the lessons varied and interesting; always well prepared for lessons - she was kind enough to provide me with extremely useful books and personal notes. Her incredible dedication and hard working nature also deserves mentioning as she was willing to help me even in the evenings when I was panicking about coursework and the approaching exams. With Alex's assistance and firm confidence in my ability I have achieved a high A in my A-level English Literature and even a merit award in Extended English. I would enthusiastically recommend Alex to anyone who wants to succeed in their exams and learn heaps of interesting information.

- Natasza (Graduated with an MA from Oxford University)

Personal Description:
I am a postgraduate from the University of Leeds with a degree in Translation Studies with French. I have a passion for speaking French and I enjoy helping others with theirs. Simple as that really.

Teaching Experience:

Despite my relatively young age I have lots of teaching experience. I have been an English language assistant in France on two occasions, most recent of which was last year. I have worked with people with both adults and children ranging from ages 7 to 40

Tutoring Approach:

My approach to tutoring is fairly straight-forward, to keep it relaxed and as informal as possible. I believe the best results can be obtained when the student is relaxed and confident, especially with regards to trying to speak a foreign language, as sometimes in a school environment the student lacks the confidence to ask questions. Rest assured, under my tuition your competence in written and spoken French will improve greatly, and hopefully it will be fun!

Personal Description:
I am a full time professional online physics tutor and an excellent physics communicator. I have the ability, understanding and resources to get the best out of students for their GCSEs, A levels and undergraduate degrees. I am a fully qualified, DBS checked, physics teacher with nine years teaching and tuition experience across all ages and abilities. Working as an examiner for the major exam boards in the UK has given me a detailed understanding of examination requirements, I extend this insight to my students, giving them not only the required knowledge for their exams but also the very best exam technique. I have just been awarded a Ph.D. in Physics, this involved producing cutting edge research for future solar technology, this work helps me to inspire my students. I am passionate about my subject and I really enjoy my job as a tutor. So if you, or someone you know, wants to learn physics and get higher grades please get in touch.

I will provide:
Increased students grades (see testimonials)
Friendly, reliable and professional service
Inspiration and encouragement
Supporting homework and problems
Highly efficient and effective environment for learning
Excellent subject knowledge
Increased problem solving skills
Significant improvements to exam technique
An ability to get the best out of students
A level, GCSE and Undergraduate Physics tutorials
A level and GCSE Chemistry and Mathematics tutorials
Help with university entrance exams

Teaching Experience:

I am a professional Physics tutor with nine years teaching and tutoring experience. In 2005 I graduated from Leeds University with a BSc Physics, having achieved the second highest mark in the year.  I received a PGCE (post graduate certificate in education) from Nottingham University in 2007.  After which I completed an NQT followed by two years at the Brunts School in Mansfield, with particular success teaching GCSE and A-level Physics.

In 2011 I started tutoring part time while studying for a Masters in Nanoscience at Nottingham University. I graduated in 2012 having achieved the highest mark in the history of the course (79.3%), while my tutees have made massive improvements.

I have obtained a PhD in Physics. This involved using X-ray based techniques to analyse molecules and nanostructures on surfaces. The primary goal was to investigate charge transfer between these nanostructures and various surfaces.  Charge transfer is very important for solar cells and organic LEDs and his research leads to fundamental understanding of the physics behind these technologies.  Part of this work involved attending MAX-Lab IV in Lund, Sweden and Soleil in Paris to which involved using a synchrotron, which is an X-ray producing particle accelerator.  I hope that this research will lead to developing new technologies for light flexible displays and low cost solar power generation.

Tutoring Approach:

I will work with the student to quickly find the problems they are having with physics, then rebuild their knowledge or correct their misconceptions, making the relevant physics clear and easy to understand. Challenging questions and assignments will be set to drive, encourage and push a student outside of tutorials. This also helps to carefully assess knowledge and give them a much clearer understanding. Working through problem solving, examination techniques and confidence building exercises, I can improve a students' performance in any exam. Ultimately driving students towards their best while making the learning process fun, enjoyable and inspirational.

How online tutorials work:
Tutorials online are conducted over Skype or FaceTime using Scribbler. This means students can see me and talk to me via a video call. Scribbler is an interactive white board used by both myself and my student, it is web based so only a flash enabled web browser is required (it doesn't work on an iPad). This allows students to work with me on problems, and keep their tutorial notes in one place for revision. I also used a wide range a range of animations and online resources, which are carefully selected to improve understanding.

Whatever you need:
So if you just need help with a few problems, a complete course in physics from scratch, or anything in-between, I can help, please get in touch.

Personal Description:
Although I now have a PGCE in mathematics I have been lucky enough to get the chance to apply my skills in maths and physics whilst working as an engineer in the automotive and white goods industries. It gave me the opportunity to travel abroad and to get involved with companies such as Dyson, Jaguar, Austin Martin and then even allowed me to watch rockets being built in Russia.
I trained engineers and factory workers in the use of mathematical and physics based subjects. Some of those I taught had jobs which involved predominantly manual skills and so they were a little rusty when applying mathematical techniques. This makes me appreciate the nervousness some adults have when presented with a subject they may not have touched since leaving school.
After leaving the engineering world I had a brief spell working as a trainer in the insurance arena and then finally ended up teaching mathematics in secondary schools.

Teaching Experience:

I worked as a manufacturing engineer for 8 years and then I taught engineers and factory workers for 10 years in the use of techniques involving mathematics and physics. After leaving the engineering world I trained adults to use a mainframe software program and then I went on to become a secondary school mathematics teacher. Finally I started tutoring from home working with various types of pupils. Some pupils have special needs, whilst others are working towards an A grade in their A levels.

Tutoring Approach:

I like to know why the tutee wishes to study. It may be to improve their confidence or to pass an exam. This will then shape the nature of the tutoring sessions. My focus is to provide people with the knowledge that is most useful to them and their aspirations.

Personal Description:
A Maths graduate professional tutor who is specialised in preparing children for the common entrance exams 11+ and 13+ with high success in securing their places at their first choice schools and GCSE, IGCSE, A-level exams. She is passionate about giving young people the best possible education in life, and relish the challenge of managing a diverse workload. Her goal is to ensure they are supported and encourage them to achieve their full potential.

Teaching Experience:

She has 8 years tutoring experiences. Her students are from both independent schools and maintained state schools. She has particularly taught those who came from the top tier independent schools, such as Colet court, St Paul`s boy school, Westminster school, Frances Holland school, Cheltenham Ladies` College etc. She is specialised in preparing children for the common entrance exams 11+, 13+ with high success in securing their places at their first-choice schools. She has a valid DBS check and is tutoring higher tier GCSE in Central London Academies.

Tutoring Approach:

She believes that every child is different, so she adjust her teaching style to enhance the student`s style of learning. It has been worked very well in the past and she helped many students to reach their goals. It is a priority for her to make sure that tutees have a firm grasp of the core skills needed to satisfy the requirements of the examination boards at different levels of the national curriculum. She provides depth knowledge to those who love Maths, and gives dedicating support to those who find it more challenging. She tailors every session to the student`s demands and builds up the strategies and frameworks to adapt his or her individual skills. She has her own teaching materials. Personal Description:
I am married with three grown up children, several chickens and a dog.
I am a regular churchgoer, a supporter of Newcastle United (I know...) and a friendly and outgoing person.
I drive my fully restored Morris Minor whenever I can, leaving the modern car for my wife and daughter. Apart from that I am quite normal!

Teaching Experience:

I am an experienced teacher of RE at secondary level, being Head of RE and SMSC at a local non selective school. As such I am well used to teaching and supporting students of all abilities and with all kinds of needs and baggage.
In addition to teaching I mark GCSE papers for the AQA exam board which gives me a significant insight into examination requirements and technique. My latest school results were an almost 25% A* to A pass rate from a non selective cohort of over 200 students.
Before entering the teaching profession I spent 20 years in Christian youth ministry, which does not colour my tutoring, but does give me a uniquely thorough knowledge of Christianity in particular.

Tutoring Approach:

I am relaxed and friendly, able to get alongside even the most reluctant of students and persuade them to learn.
I believe enjoyment and relevance are the key attractions to students, qualities often perceived to be lacking in the subject. I like to be topical and humorous, whilst also being organised and firm in my approach.

Personal Description:
I have completed PhD in Aerospace Engineering from The University of Manchester. I offer assistance to degree students in assignments and dissertations. I also offer home tuitions for GCSE and A level students. Currently I am teaching at the University of Manchester to engineering students.

Teaching Experience:

I have taught as Lecturer at under-grad level in the department of mechanical engineering, UET Lahore for almost three years. In January 2007, I joined the department, as Lab Engineer and then promoted to the position of Lecturer after completing Master's degree in 2009. The university and the department claim top position in national ranking and also enjoy the honour of being the biggest and oldest ones in the country. My career of about two years here was full of struggle and effort for excellence in teaching and research.
In addition to that I have have given tuitions as Home Tutor to GCSE and O/A level individuals and small groups.

Tutoring Approach:

I always have the highest expectations of pupils and always have had, even when it was fashionable for learning to be more "child centred"; this is an approach I have found to pay rich dividends in terms of a pupil's academic and personal development. I have always managed to maintain friendly and relaxed environment tailored exactly to what the students requires. Above all I can offer general education and career advice when it matters the most and have observed that my students usually make fast progress towards their goals and good outputs.

Personal Description:
I'm a Beijing-born writer and teacher, winner of international prizes for Chinese writing, and author of best-selling non-fiction books. I first came to the UK in 1994, after studying history and culture in China. I'm married to a well-known British translator of Chinese, and I live in Whitley Bay.

Teaching Experience:

I taught Mandarin at Newcastle University Business School in the 1990s, when I also taught business people in companies such as Yves St. Laurent, both one-to-one and in small groups. I also gave supplementary tuition to British undergraduates in reading, writing, listening and speaking Mandarin, on a one-to-one basis.
I taught Mandarin in Hong Kong from 2000 to 2009, to all age groups, from toddlers to retirees, both privately and in companies; I taught both Cantonese speakers and non-Chinese English speakers. I also taught at the Hong Kong Open University.

Tutoring Approach:

I have worked on one-to-one and small group teaching: I like an interactive situation where tutor and student work out the student's needs together, and the tutor helps the student to meet his/her goals by acting as facilitator and learning advisor.
My focus is on learning, and not on teaching: it is the tutor's job to help the student learn better, until the point is reached where the student has become an effective and autonomous learner, and no longer needs a teacher.
Many of my students have become friends and remained friends.

Personal Description:
I am a multi-instrumentalist originally from the Scottish Borders, playing flute, whistles and clarinet.
I specialise in folk and traditional music, mainly playing Scottish, Irish, Manx, Northumbrian and Breton. I studied at Newcastle University on the Folk and Traditional Music degree and gained a 2.1 overall grade with a 1st in performance in 2013. As well as working for Live Music Now, teaching privately and teaching at the Sage Gateshead I perform in a few different bands.

Projects and Employment

Performer and workshop leader for Live Music Now
As a music leader on the Live Music Now scheme, I have extensive experience of performing and delivering workshops to those who may not have regular access to live music. Audiences include children with special educational needs, adults with learning disabilities, children in hospitals and elderly people living in sheltered accommodation. Due to the diverse range of audiences and performance settings my partner and I have to be very flexible and always ready to tailor our performance accordingly.

The Sage Gateshead, Adult learning, Ensemble leader for two
bands within the Folkworks Tuesday program.
I write, arrange and teach music to the Beginner and Intermediate Bands at Folkworks Tuesdays. These sessions are taught using a combination of learning by ear and reading notation.

Private Music Teacher.
I give one to one lessons to adults and children of any ability and consequently my teaching style is very flexible.

Performer and recording artist in various bands.

Freya Rae & Louis Bingham
A quote from our website:
Freya Rae & Louis Bingham's music is varied, colourful and enthralling. They are a young duo who play a mixture of traditional tunes and modern compositions, drawing particularly on strong influences from Ireland and Brittany. On stage their unique and engaging performance dynamic communicates to audiences their love and sensitivity for the tradition, whilst presenting their own innovative compositions with virtuosity
and creative flair. Multi-instrumentalists, Freya's whistles, flute and clarinet blend seamlessly with Louis' guitars, cittern and bouzouki. They have recently released their debut album Curlicue, a recording which has garnered significant critical acclaim.
"Beautifully arranged and played with an entirely convincing sensibility... this is exquisite musicianship' The Living Tradition

Birlinn Jiarg
Birlinn Jiarg was brought together by multi-instrumentalist Beccy Hurst to perform the traditional Manx music she grew up with as well as her own compositions. Having performed with various Manx bands and dance teams over the years, Beccy moved to England to study on the Folk Degree at Newcastle University.
At the centre of Birlinn Jiarg's sound is the combination of Beccy's whistle and concertina playing and the clarinet and flute of Freya Rae (Freya Rae and Louis Bingham, Tom Kitching Band). The unusual combination of low whistle and clarinet was what originally inspired the band's formation and sets Birlinn Jiarg's sound apart from more traditional line-ups. Having performed in a duo with Beccy for a few years, Scottish guitarist and bouzouki player Alasdair Paul ( Pons Aelius , Kimber/Paul) was a natural choice for Birlinn Jiarg. Completing the quartet's line-up is bodhránist Callum Younger (Pons Aelius, Trio FCT). Callum and Alasdair have
worked together on a variety of projects and their inventive and powerful accompaniment provides a great platform for Beccy's and Freya's melodic interplay.

Tom Kitching Band
I play flute and clarinet in Tom's band. We have completed two tours around England and are planning more in 2016.
"Interloper is challenging, dexterous and above all, thought-provoking" EFDSS Spring 2015

Simo Lagnawi (The Gnawa Berber)

I am a guest musician on Simo's album (Track 9, Sma) and I became really interested in improvisation during this project as it is a very important part of the Gnawa tradition. I improvise throughout the track and found it really beneficial for my playing and composition skills.

Teaching Experience:

I am an experienced performer and teacher who has graduated from Newcastle University with a degree in Folk and Traditional Music

Teaching Experience:
Currently I teach a wide range of people from children as young as 6 to groups of adults at The Sage Gateshead, I am also a performer and workshop leader for Live Music Now

I can travel within Newcastle city for an extra £5

Tutoring Approach:

I am a flexible and friendly teacher who takes into consideration my pupils interests and needs and I create lessons that are suited to the individual.

Personal Description:
I am a University graduate with a first class degree in Politics from Northumbria University. I completed a very well-received dissertation on the subject of citizenship in America. I plan on beginning a Master's degree in Political Theory at the University of Manchester in the next academic year.

Teaching Experience:

While taking my A levels I was a prefect, and my duties included helping English students in years seven and eight with their work. My Politics A level was self-taught with two other students. While at University I have served on the committee of the Debating society, where aside from helping students express their ideas, the training also often involved providing concise explanations of current events and related political theories.
I have worked with the veteran's charity Forward Assist, teaching political understanding and general knowledge to veterans to help them in civilian life.

Tutoring Approach:

My tutoring is tailored according to the student's needs - whether these are to gain a broad understanding of a subject, prepare for a specific assessment in a particular area, or to develop skills applicable to many subject areas.

Personal Description:
Born in Edinburgh, I was raised in India and then Africa, before returning to the UK. Having lived in London and South East England since then, our family moved to the Scottish Highlands in 2012, primarily to raise our children in a less chaotic and more natural environment. We've had no regrets at all...and our various dogs and cats are similarly happy with the move!

I have always been passionate about English, from the weekly spelling tests and grammar exercises of primary school to the privilege of being taught at A Level by Tolkien's grandson. His vibrant, interactive approach shaped my ongoing learning and fired my imagination. After leaving Edinburgh University with a Masters in English Language and Literature, I went on to take a TEFL qualification and used this when travelling abroad in Turkey and throughout the Caribbean. I am delighted that I continue to work in the area of EAL with overseas students in British schools, and that technology has allowed me to work with individuals in their home countries, via Skype.

My love of English directed my career, working first at the Royal Shakespeare Company before becoming an independent theatre producer in London, and a theatre advertising executive on accounts such as Andrew Lloyd Webber's 'Cats' and Cameron Mackintosh's 'Les Miserables'.

In 2008, my partner and I began the home education of our two children at primary stage. It was both challenging and inspirational and the experiences and knowledge I gained during those years - not purely academic, but also the different ways and methods of learning, the different developmental stages of children, the different learning styles of children - continue to inform my present day tutoring.

While home educating, and with my love of theatre, I founded an educational theatre group, Active Arts, with Margo Gunn, a teacher and director at Shakespeare's Globe Theatre in London. We worked with a wide age range of home educated and mainstream school children, providing workshops on various Shakespeare plays including 'Midsummer Night's Dream', 'The Tempest' and 'Romeo & Juliet'. Workshops were also designed specifically in support of GCSE/IGCSE work. As passionate advocates of Shakespeare, our approach was active and energetic, lifting Shakespeare off the page and introducing his plays, his language and his theatricality in an engaging and tangible manner. I was thrilled to be able to resurrect this work in the Highlands, initially at a local primary school, conducting 4 workshops for Primary 4-Primary 7, resulting in workshop presentations of 'The Tempest' and 'Macbeth'.

Teaching Experience:

In addition to home educating my two children and running Active Arts, my personal and professional lives led me into private tutoring and I have been a private tutor in English Language and Literature since 2009, working alongside children and young people from age 5 upwards, whether on general literacy issues, EAL or focusing specifically on exam work, from SATS, Nationals and GCSEs, through to A Levels, Highers and beyond. Tutees have been those in mainstream state schools, leading UK private schools and home education, following the English and Scottish curriculums, as well as IGCSEs with providers including Cambridge, OOL and Edexcel.

A number of my tutees have challenges such as Autism, ADHD, Tourette's and dyslexia, and the combination of experience, research and support courses have built my knowledge and understanding in these areas.

While I am registered with tutoring agencies, many of my tutees come via personal recommendation and I was delighted that tutees I had worked with in England chose to continue working with me via Skype after our move to Scotland.

Critically, I am PVG checked, and would be happy to provide evidence of this, together with references and qualification documentation.

Tutoring Approach:

MAKING ENGLISH ACCESSIBLE
My approach is not one of 'dip in and out' for an hour, or 'one size fits all', but of creating a relaxed, enjoyable, constructive atmosphere and building a relationship within which the young person's potential can be maximised, against a tailored, individual approach. While texts and challenges might be shared by various tutees, learning styles, atmospheres for learning, methods for learning, will always be different.
As importantly, my approach places great value on the parents, their involvement and their right and need for clear, ongoing and comprehensive communication. As such, I am often in regular contact with both my tutees and their parents, should they require it, outside of tutorials.

"The mind is not a vessel to be filled, but a fire to be ignited."
Plutarch

If you're looking for a desk-based tutor, one who does all the talking and expects your child to just sit and listen, I am not the right person for you.

If you're looking for someone to ignite a love of English, to build confidence, to be energetic, to make learning enjoyable, active, off the page, accessible, then, here I am!

MAKING ENGLISH ACCESSIBLE
For many young people with whom I work, English and everything to do with it - their texts, their homework, punctuation, close reading, writing an essay - is a minefield. Often, what holds them back is a mixture of low confidence, fear of getting it wrong, and simply not having grasped the 'map' of how to 'do it'.

One of my main motivations, is to make English accessible; to take away the fear factor, to provide clear and simple structures, to grasp some key exam techniques, to demystify the exam paper, to clarify what the heck the exam paper is testing them on; to remind tutees that they have, naturally, learned one of the most difficult languages in the world and are fully capable of expressing themselves on paper, under pressure and against time.

However whimsical it may sound, as with many things in life, self-belief and understanding are powerful tools for success.

MAKING ENGLISH ACCESSIBLE
The demand for private tutoring is growing exponentially. As The Telegraph reported in 2012, "more than a quarter of parents use private tutoring to supplement their children's education", spending "£6bn a year in the UK." A double page spread in Femail, February 2015, states research that almost 1 in 4 children are now privately tutored, with pupils at private schools almost twice as likely to have private tutoring than those from state schools. Whatever explanation there is for this rise, cost to parents remains an obvious barrier to its provision.

I am, of course, a 'business', but I also firmly believe that access to tutoring should be made as wide as possible; education is a right and not a privilege. As such, while I have a standard rate for 1-1 tutoring, I am also very happy to discuss your requirements with you and to look at options available, such as small group tutoring where the cost per head can be significantly reduced.

Please do take the opportunity of discussing your requirements with me, rather than potentially losing the opportunity of providing tutorial support for your child.
