Personal Description:
Hi! I'm an Oxford graduate with a 2:1 in English Language and Literature. I graduated in 2013 and went on to study an MSc in Psychology at Oxford Brookes, in which I achieved a distinction. Since then, I have been working as an administrator and looking for ways to continue to engage with the subjects that interest me. Tutoring appealed to me at once as a rewarding way to put the skills that I learnt during my degree and masters to good use. Reading English at Oxford has honed my critical thinking, analytical abilities and study skills, while my masters has given me experience in data analysis and conducting research. In 2012 I also co-wrote a novel which was recently published in the UK, which really deepened my understanding of how to write effectively. I'd love to tutor others and help them to develop these skills too! In my spare time, I like to read and write fiction. My main address is in AL7, but I am also happy to tutor in Barnet and the surrounding area. As well as tutoring, I also specialise in editing, copy-editing and proofreading academic essays, job applications and CVs, and articles.

Teaching Experience:

I have successfully completed an assessment for the selective tutoring agency Blue Tutors. During the assessment I had to demonstrate my tutoring ability to a trained assessor, who described my communication skills as 'excellent'.
In my final term at Oxford, I volunteered with Schools Plus, a program which runs after school tuition sessions for struggling students in areas of economic disadvantage. I spent half a term working with GCSE English students, tutoring them on an individual basis in the run up to their January modules. As part of the selection process for the program, I also attended tutoring training.
When I was in the 6th form (in 2009), I also volunteered as a classroom assistant in my school. I was working with students who were having difficulty with essay-based subjects like History and English. I worked with two students in their History classes, helping them to understand the work they were set in class and working through it with them. I had to use my knowledge of French to help one student who had not yet learnt to speak fluent English, translating the teacher's instructions for her and helping her with words she did not understand. Between 2009-10, I helped to run two after-school classes for Key Stage 2 pupils, one in Literacy and Art and another in Drama. This involved planning and delivering lessons to classes of about 5-10 children, and keeping them engaged with the topics they were learning through activities designed to both teach and entertain.

Tutoring Approach:

My experience of tutoring in the past has shown me the importance of patience and respect in teaching. Especially in essay-based subjects, it is crucial that a teacher allows their pupils space to develop their own ideas, and respects their independent thought. Learning by rote has only limited usefulness: the best way to excel at a subject is to understand it, so I always explain concepts as fully as possible and move at the tutee's pace, making sure that they have properly grasped each concept or issue before moving on to the next. My Schools Plus training emphasised the idea that the goal of tutoring is to help a student to help themselves, enabling them to tackle problems rather than solving things for them. I think that this is fantastic advice, and it is a rule which I always try to bear in mind when tutoring.

Personal Description:
I am a fully qualified teacher of German and Spanish and I have been teaching for a number of years. I am now working as a teacher of Modern Languages in a secondary school.

Teaching Experience:

I have extensive experience of one-to-one and small group tutoring and I have a thorough knowledge of the Scottish school curriculum including arrangements for the new National 5, Higher and Advanced Higher courses. I have now taught the new Curriculum for Excellnece courses in both German and Spanish and have a good understanding of levels and assessments.

Tutoring Approach:

Tutoring is a great way of learning a language because you benefit from full attention of your tutor. I plan and deliver my lessons to suit my pupils' needs. Passing an exam often needs specialist preparation with someone who knows the exam system and can guide their pupil/student through e.g. unit assessments, Talking exam preparation etc.
On the other hand, we learn languages to use them independently, free from the constraints of selected exam topics. This is where vocabulary, language structure and grammar come together and enables the learner to use their learning in different contexts. I teach all areas effectively using tried and tested techniques and resources that will help my learners improve their knowledge of the language.

Personal Description:
I am 53, with a B.Sc. in theoretical physics and an M.Sc. in quantum field theory (with some astrophysics), both from Imperial College, London. I have spent some years working in IT, but maths and physics are the subjects I love, and I enjoy teaching them. I'm familiar with all mathematics (including further maths) and physics to beyond A level standard and theoretical physics to university graduate level.

Teaching Experience:

I have taught chess at school.

Tutoring Approach:

My approach to tutoring is to teach the concepts clearly. Once the student has
the fundamental concepts straight then academic attainment follows naturally.

Many pupils struggle with maths and physics because of poor explanations
of the concepts involved. Schools often rely on rote memorisation and cramming, as
alternative to understanding. My approach is to explain the derivation of
material. A successful technique is to work through the pupil's choice of homework
or revision problem exercises or past exam papers, showing how each exercise can
be solved. This way the tutoring is targeted at exactly those areas that require
help and is also most directly relevant to achieving exam success.

All curricula and exam boards covered.

Personal Description:
I live and work in Newcastle upon Tyne.

Currently I am employed by the Open University as an Associate Lecturer tutoring modules in history and the humanities. I have also worked at other local universities teaching history and politics, including a recent contract at Newcastle University.

I have research interests in history at post-doctoral level, specialising in late nineteenth and early twentieth century British electoral politics.

I am looking to teach students at a higher education level or those aspiring to it. I can work with students at levels including: A-Level or equivalent, at foundation degree level, at undergraduate and post-graduate levels.

I am looking to work with students studying history, politics or those looking to build study and learning skills for higher education, especially those interested in studying the arts and humanities.

Teaching Experience:

I have fourteen years experience of working at higher education institutions. My main teaching has been in the field of British and European history, other humanities at foundation level (including literature, history of art, music, religious studies, history of science and medicine and philosophy) and contemporary politics.

At the Open University, I have also specialised in study skills teaching to aid access to further courses, working with students from a broad range of educational experiences.

Some of the work I do is one-to-one teaching, so I am used to working with individual students and responding to their needs.

I regularly provide teaching in the form of lecturers and tutorials, and marking of assignments.

I like to create teaching materials to help students with their studies.

OU lecturers receive regular feedback from their students about their teaching and I tend to gain very good feedback.

I am also involved in postgraduate teaching concerning research in local history.

Tutoring Approach:

I am familiar with a range of teaching methods and would tailor the support to students on the basis of their requirements.

At the OU, much of my work is distance learning-related which involves correspondence, online and telephone communication so I am happy to provide this sort of support to students across the country.

I can also meet up with students for face-to-face contact even some distance away if that is suitable.

I am happy to mark work and offer feedback to students, including essays and dissertations.

I can assist students with their current studies.

Personal Description:
I am a super-tutor, with a 1st Class Masters from Cambridge University. I am excellent with children and love to help others learn.

I went straight from university into drama school, and now work as a tutor and a professional actress. I have 4 years of tutoring experience and have helped children get into some of the best schools in the country, as well as aiding older children in getting the A*s they want at GCSE and A-level.

Teaching Experience:

My degree at Cambridge University was in Education studies with English and Drama. Although it was not a teacher training course, the Education Studies module of the degree involved learning an introduction to the philosophy, psychology, sociology and history of education. I was also, of course, able to benefit from the private seminar and tutorial system that Cambridge offers. As a result, I am fully aware of how beneficial a one-on-one teaching style can help to build confidence, and heighten learning and understanding.

I have now been tutoring ages 7-18 for 4 years, and have had brilliant feedback from my various jobs:

1. Lucy is an excellent enthusiastic tutor who does a great job keeping my son interested and engaged. I would highly recommend her. - Father of Zain (age 8)

2. I would really like to thank you for being such a great tutor. We appreciate the effort you put into preparing for the sessions with Ella and we have every confidence in your dedication and abilities. - Father of Ella (age 16)

3. Julian scored 97% UMS marks in English Language, which is within 2.1% of all the boys taking English this year. For English Literature his UMS score was 97% again, which is within 4% of all the boys this year! This brilliant result, we think, is largely thanks to your help. - Mother of Julian (age 16)

4. Our son absolutely loved Lucy. She worked so hard with him in the lead-up to his exams, and I don`t know what we would have done without her! - Mother of Christopher (age 11)

Tutoring Approach:

I am a confidence-buildling tutor.

My approach is generally fun. I am the tutor who is also the friend. I do not let a child get away with misbehaviour or laziness, but at the same time I am certainly not stern. My approach is without a doubt to help the child learn to love the subject and want improvement for themselves, not because I demand it of them.

Firstly, I will always aim to find the areas the child is having the most difficulty with and break it down to its simplest form to help them understand. Once a child has understood the basic principle of what we are learning, I aim to push them as far as I can with their learning - my memory of the best teacher's I had at school were the teacher's who pushed me even further than I needed to go, and who gave me more knowledge and information than I needed to know. I then found that I entered my exams relaxed and confident, knowing that I had excess knowledge. Rather than learning just to answer set questions in an exam, I felt I truly understood those subjects.

Of course, I would play everything by ear though, and I would not pile extra work or information on a child if they are still struggling. We will work at a pace that is comfortable but useful for them.

Personal Description:
Hi, I'm Kevin, a friendly and approachable full time Maths tutor with a patient and empathetic attitude.

I studied Maths at Uni after gaining 11 A grades at GCSE and 4 A grades at A level (Maths, Further Maths, Physics and Chemistry) and since then I`ve worked as both an Accountant and an Actuary.

I`m an intelligent guy with the ability to break things down to their simplest forms, but am also patient and a good listener with the ability to understand the way someone else thinks about a problem. I think its these qualities that combine to make me a natural tutor and time after time I`ve experienced that when people have a problem understanding something, its been me they`ve come to.

One of my recent reviews:

"My son was struggling with his AS level maths course having failed to keep up with the pace of new topics
in the Autumn term of 2012. Relatively late in the day before the exams in May 2013 we were fortunate
enough to get Kevin to help him and there was a complete transformation of his confidence and approach
to maths. Before Kevin's intervention my son had achieved U, D and E grades in various mock exams but
in test papers before the actual exams he was getting results right at the top of the grade spectrum. I cannot
recommend Kevin too highly for his technical expertise in the subject or for his organised and sympathetic
teaching approach which was essential in my son's case. Kevin brought my son order and confidence out of
confusion and despair"

Teaching Experience:

I`m experienced and happy to tutor at any level KS3, GCSE, AS and A-level, QTS Numeracy exam (in fact, adult learners in any field needing a maths/numeracy refresher).

I also tutor for business school and foundation year maths exams eg GMAT, NCUK IFY etc. (Please ask for rates for these exams).

Tutoring Approach:

Let me know what your aim is - whether it be to understand that topic/module you 'just cant get!', or to go through past papers, or to learn a whole course from start to finish, and between us we can agree the best approach for you, and prepare a plan of action to ensure you achieve your goals.

Personal Description:
SAXOPHONE-I am an experienced saxophonist. Currently I play both alto and baritone saxophone. I have taught young pupils at my old school before for free, but now that i have gained enough experience, not just as a teacher but at a very high level in bands too, I am starting to tutor. I teach many different styles, have it be jazz, pop or classical. I offer tuition for students of all ages. Whether you are young and just starting out or older and wish to try something new/different for fun and want some guidance in the right direction, I am here to help. I teach for those at a amateur and beginner level. Music is a great passion of mine and I really enjoy teaching others something so great.

MATHS- I am a higher level maths student and i have an A grade at GCSE level maths. During my free periods i spend time helping lower school student who are struggling with their maths for free because i really enjoy teaching. I teach everything from key stage 1,2 and 3 maths to foundation GCSE students. Maths has always been a great ability of mine and I mainly teach it because I have a love for it and in my experience those who i have taught have found me very helpful.

Teaching Experience:

SAXOPHONE- I have taught young pupils at my old school before for free to gain some experience in teaching. I also play at a high level in the Hillingdon Music Service concert band and Sax Group, as well as in multiple Jazz and Big Bands.I have been on tour to France with the Music Service as well and have played for weddings too. I now have a good level of experience in both playing and teaching.

MATHS- I have been teaching GCSE and lower level maths for a few years now. I was part of a team who a few years ago went to the UK maths challenge representing my region of London. I enjoy teaching maths and in my experience those who i have taught have found me very useful.

Tutoring Approach:

I find that bringing out the passion in the student is what counts, so for music the genre they enjoy most and helping them fall in love with music that way. With maths i believe having a strategic plan of getting a topic or part of maths that the student is struggling with and keeping at it and doing questions and going through the solutions with them until they understand. I understand that many people struggle with maths or may not like it but i find that someone younger (such as myself) teaching them makes it a lot easier on them. Another good way i find with maths is going through questions and helping them understand how to get to the answer rather than just giving the answer and moving on with a simple tick or cross.

Personal Description:
In July 2013, I graduated from Royal Holloway, University of London, undertaking a BMus (Hons) Music degree (2.1) with a principle study in singing (1st). I took two gap years before going to university to gain experience in the music and drama fields. I have studied modules at university ranging from Bach to Beethoven and Sibelius to Weill.

Teaching Experience:

In my two gap years I was a gap student at Bedales Schools for a term and then was invited back to cover a member of music staff. Responsibilities included teaching 8-13 year old mixed pupils classroom music as well as supervising music practices. I also tutored pupils through grade 5 theory achieving merit and distinction grades.

Tutoring Approach:

I have a very laid-back attitude to teaching and will teach you in similar ways that I have been taught. I understand totally that some pupils need several ways of explaining things so bring a variety of teaching methods to my lessons. I make teaching interesting and engaging and always try to relate the subject to the pupil. I have been very fortunate to learn under some inspirational teachers and would love to be able to carry on their enthusiasm to other students.

Generally, I would consider myself as a patient person, pleasant, team worker, with great interest in transmitting Greek language to people who have interest in it.

Teaching Experience:

I have served Primary Education in Greece for 12 years, being allocated to islands and remote places in the north borders of Greece. This experience was invaluable, as I had the opportunity to teach children of all possible family, financial and social backgrounds.
Currently I have the opportunity and the pleasure to work in the Greek School of Glasgow for four years now, teaching Greek as a foreign language to children of all ages and to adult students of all ages!

As teaching is an amazing, interactive process, the tutoring approach depends on the needs of each one of my students. Normally it includes books, handouts, cd's, role play games, interaction activities, songs, skype sessions and web apps.

Personal Description:
Hello! My name is Francis. I am a 28-year-old native English speaker based in Colchester. I hold a Joint Honours English Literature & History degree from York St John University. In 2003 the only A grade I received at GCSE level was in French. Between 2012 and 2014 I studied optional Mandarin and Spanish at university, having rekindled my own interest in, and talent for, language learning.

Teaching Experience:

I have previous experience teaching English to both children and adults in Wuhan, China, during my time there.

Tutoring Approach:

As I have mentioned, learning foreign languages is both an interest and a talent of mine. However, I am equally interested in teaching my own first language to those who wish to learn it; the English language, both written and spoken, is a rich cultural tapestry going back into ancient times, and a functioning knowledge of it is a worthy addition to anybody's CV. I believe that encouragement and positive reinforcement are the key to success in any endeavour, and accordingly I hope you will find me to be a friendly, positive, encouraging and patient tutor.

I am hoping to work with anyone who wishes to improve their English skills. I can help you improve your grammar, spelling, pronunciation, vocabulary or conversational skills, and I can also teach you some things about British culture and history if you wish; while learning a language is important, it is also necessary to know a certain amount of background about the place where it is spoken. It does not matter if you are not yet fluent - what's most important is that you are willing to learn, and will enjoy doing so. I aim to put the student first, and with this in mind we will discuss and then tackle subject matter appropriate to your age, ability, personal interests, and study aims.

Personal Description:
I am a mature, bubbly and reliable individual; I have a passion for learning and thrive in passing my knowledge onto others. I am currently completing my Biology MPhil (Master of Philosophy) degree at Newcastle University; I am also a keen musician and have previously worked as a Music Teacher. I possess experience of successfully tutoring pupils of all ages; I take a flexible approach to teaching by playing to pupils' strengths, improving their weaknesses and exploring the best, most enjoyable way of getting new and difficult material across.

Teaching Experience:

Past Experience:
~Biology Demonstrator (Newcastle University)
~Biology Tutor (Self-Employed)
~Junior Music Teacher (Peterhead Music and Rock School)

I have extensive experience of working in educational settings. I was employed as a Junior Music Teacher at Peterhead Music and Rock school. There I taught from the ages of 4 - 40 keyboard, piano and musical theory. I learnt to adopt a patient, confident and professional approach and to build an instant rapport with pupils of all ages. I adapted my teaching style for the needs of each pupil and individually planned all lessons within good time. I prepped many of my students for exams (The Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music, ABRSM, accredited), for example one student achieved a Distinction Grade 1 piano whilst another obtained a Merit for her Grade 5 theory. I carried this experience on to my role as a Biology Tutor where I followed the curriculum and successfully aided a pupil in improving their grade from a D to a B.

While completing my Masters degree I worked at Newcastle University as a School of Biology Demonstrator. Through the role of Demonstrator I have gained valuable experience of helping to run undergraduate laboratory practical classes alongside experienced technicians and academics. My main tasks were to supervise the students; I would ensure they adhered to safety protocols and promote their understanding of the practical by assisting with any queries they may have. I developed a good rapport with both staff and students by adopting a friendly, hard-working and patient approach.

Tutoring Approach:

As mentioned in sections above; I am a very patient and friendly individual. My approach to tutoring depends entirely on the student I am working with. I very much like to tailor sessions to every individuals' needs and abilities, ensuring that the learner dictates the pace we work at.
